On Sunday the Academy Awards will recognize the big movies and performances of the last year, but there is one movie some believe is noticeably absent from the red carpet.
Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" did not receive any nominations, despite being a major success at the box office and moving many believers around the country.
Now there's a debate on wether the film was snubbed because of its religious content.
Reverend Robert Slimp, a Presbyterian minister, says, "In our world today there is antagonism about absolute about a man saying, 'I'm the way, truth and life. No man comes to the father except by me.'"
And, Kevin Lausch of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church says, "Those who do the rankings avoid highly ranked films or films that get press coverage. They look for films that might be underdogs or that have artistic merit on their own."

I thought it received 3 nominations: original score...and 2 others. No?
Yes- Cinematography, Makeup, and Original Score.
They're minor, but I was happy with it. It was a beautiful movie and I think it stands a good chance at winning all three.

I think worse than snubbed....that would mean they saw it and ignored it......from what I read, the majority of them didn't even go see the film in the first place....that is a worse kind of bias in my book
Three nominations isn't snubbing. This article would have you believe it was overlooked for everything.
Cinematography, makeup and score are all major awards, and make sense for a film that is more art than entertainment.
They aren't the awards the public cares about. It's like winning Miss Congeniality at the Miss America pageant. Nobody cares.
Hollywood honoring 'The Passion of the Christ' would be like the National Socialist White People's Party recommending that everyone see Schindler's List.
I don't think most film buffs (or filmmakers, for that matter) consider cinematography to be a "minor" award. The others, yes. I loved "Passion" but I'm not sure what other awards I would have nominated it for. It is a fantastic and important piece of art, but to me it is so different from what a film usually is that I don't really think of it as the "best picture." It's kind of in a different category for me. My $.02.
Being disappointed that it didn't get more nominations is understandable if you were rooting for the film... but this article is completely false in its assertion that it recieved no nominations.
I think you make a good point. It was the best picture by far in my view, but I can see why it didn't get nominate for reasons other than hostility to the message. Who knows what their reasons were, but I'm glad it got 3 nominations.
I'm not rooting for the film per se, I have long since lost any interest in the Oscars.
The article was mistaken, but it reinforces the point that besides besides best picture/director/actor awards, the others might as well be nonexistent as far as the general public is concerned, and when a movie like the Passion gets shut out of even nominations in those categories, it's a snubb as far as the public is concerned, regardless of how many of the minor awards it gets nominated for or even win.
Me too. And I'm really glad it was made. I wish that it had been around for me to see back when I was 17 and knew everything. I am happy for all of the similarly "enlightened" young people of today and tomorrow who will benefit from having their cocky selves knocked back into their seats and shown just what He did in His love for us all.
