PC Problem - Help Needed

Posted on 03/09/2005 7:27:12 PM PST by MplsSteve

I use Microsoft as my Internet browser.

recently, I went into Internet Options.

I delete cookies and files. I go in and wipe out clear out History...

...but I still keep seeing internet sites that I THOUGHT I'd previously deleted up in the browser line. For example, Free Republic shows up in my browser as I start to type in its address. It automatically fills in.

What the hell am I not doing correctly?!

There is a hidden file under your History folder that is called "index.dat" This needs to be deleted to permanently take care of your problem. The only way that you can do that is to log onto a different account that has Administrator privileges and then go to your user profile history folder and delete the file. When you log back in as yourself the index.dat file will be recreated and your problem will be gone.

The unchecking of Autocomplete will stop the sites from showing on your URL line, but the sites will still exist in your index.dat file until it is deleted.

Hope this helps...

"Oh yes. Me. My addy is sending out viagra!!!!! notices, home loans, you name it, "I'm" sending it."

Your computer has a trojan and has been turned into a "zombie". That sounds like I'm joking but that's it.

If you don't have anti-virus protection, get it. I prefer AVG. If you do have an anti-virus program, update it and run a scan. It should find the problem.

The majority of spam messages on the internet come from computers like yours. Without your knowledge it is sending out thousands of spam emails. When you consider that there's literally hundreds of thousands of computers out there that also are doing the same thing, you realize what a problem spam is.

Run your anti-virus, get Ad-Aware and run it, then get a firewall like ZoneAlarm or Sygate, and you should be fine.

Spybot S&D is also good at picking up what Ad-Aware misses. Also good to run online AV scan like:
housecall.antivirus.com free online AV and spyware scan &
www3.ca.com AV & spyware scan. Symantec and McAfee also have free online AV and vulnerability scans.

I have most of the stuff you mentioned....and I update REGULARLY.

Maybe I'll start it in Safe Mode and do the scans that way. Norton hasn't caught anything, Spybot hasn't...nor Adaware.

Got any other ideas? I'm serious...

No problem. Let me know if it works. I may have some other ideas - I go through this about once a month with my son's computer because he keeps disabling his firewall. Good luck.

Images load and upload slower, they begin as grainy images, and clear up,slowly. I suppose the issue is the time involved. Thing is, the quality of My images is important to Me, I am not Geek enough to risk My best efforts on unproven systems. I may be a bit senile, I am damned sure old enough, but, whatever, Firefox just did not impress Me all that much.
I run Adaware, Spybot, and the MS spyware blocker, and Spyware Blaster. I run Bit Defender, and AVG, free, and it has been a long time since anything sneaked in.
Only reason Firefox ain't the target is that it is not yet worth aiming at, not that it is bullet proof.

Click on Tools, find and click on Auto Complete and then Clear Forms. That erases the entries in the address bar.

Actually, I like how Firefox does that, since I'm on a dialup. I can get an idea of whether I really want the image or not, especially if it's a large file. With IE you have to wait until the image appears.

I've compared images saved with both browsers and personally see no difference.

Here's a good a test as any - color bars. Save it with both browsers and do a side by side comparison. (Why anyone would post color bars in a lossless format is another story).

Addenda:

IE either waits until the image is completely downloaded, or it'll come line by line, or a few lines at a time, and I forgot to note that.

Still the image quality and file size is the same, regardless of the browser.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work for all of the entries. The person writing this post will still have some. Microsoft stores data in the index.dat hidden file in the History folder. This data will always exist unless the file is deleted. A quick Google search for "index.dat" and "history" will show you the issue.

Uh, that should be lossy instead of lossless. Time for bed....
