"I don't think many kids were trying to vote in 1985, either, unless your poiunt is that in certain places they'll let anyone vote without checking ID."

No, it was just a funny line that's all... (o:

I agree, the note at the end definitely summed things up nicely.

This is one Of my all time favorite teen movies, in the top 5, it is 1 or two (it and 16 candles rate about the same to me.)

Another couple of quotes::

" Does Barry manilow know you stole his wardrobe?"

" You know, Bender, you don't even count. you could disappear, and it wouldn't make any difference".

"you want to see funny", look at John bender in 5 years"

VERNON
You think about this...when you get
old, these kids; when I get old,
they're gonna be runnin' the country.

CARL
Yeah?

VERNON
Now this is the thought that wakes
me up in the middle of the night...
That when I get older, these kids
are gonna take care of me...

CARL
I wouldn't count on it!

Such a great movie!! My brother and I used to watch it every Saturday morning. We must have had it on tape or something. That and Sycronicity! Ah, the good 'ol days! :-)

Class without race involved? That can't be. All white kids are upper class. But seriously, I agree with you. A racial mix would have detracted from his class-obessed theme. It would have changed it entirely. The victimization theme would have taken it's toll.

oh yea, this movie came out our graduating year and it will always be fondly remembered as the movie that defined our Gen x (when we were teens).

"Let's write a comedy movie script about Bender and Brian in 2003, eighteen years after that fateful day when Bender fell in love with the girl who ruined his life and Brian became best friends with the dope smoking sociopath who ruined his life! And get this - Brian is a frustrated school teacher who has to supervise a bunch of kids on Saturday detention and Bender is the Janitor!"

That would be a good idea

I loved Hughes "Sixteen Candles." No deep meaning there, but just fun.

Hey it had deep meaning for me. The intelligent, caring girl with chemistry potential sometimes wins over the ditz! :)

Another good 80s movie: Private School with Phoebe Cates!

...is that being young is the greatest possible attribute. Even for the unpopular characters, high school is viewed as a pinnacle of vitality and the rest of life is a slow fade toward an inevitable end.

As one famous movie actress said, "The problem with youth is that it is wasted on the young". John Hughes should really have a HS named after him like in that recent spoof movie.

Brian Johnson: I'm a f#&king idiot because I can't make a lamp?
John Bender: No. You're a genius because you can't make a lamp.

Richard Vernon: What if your home... what if your family... what if your *dope* was on fire?
John Bender: Impossible, sir. It's in Johnson's underwear.

I'll call John Hughes.

He's busy working on a potential travesty: Director Plans 'Pretty in Pink' Sequel

Director John Hughes has announced that classic '80s movie Pretty In Pink is to get a sequel.

The teen film followed high school student Andie, who developed a crush on the school's new guy, while her friend Duckie, who secretly loves Andie, is forced to step aside.

The sequel, which is planned for a 2006 release, will show fans what has changed for the characters now that their high school days are over. The movie's original stars - Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy and John Cryer - have all agreed to appear.

I'll reserve judgement on that one for now.

A "Breakfast Club" sequel would be better...here's how I'd do it:

Vernon in a nursing home, Bender (an ex-con) working as a caretaker in that nursing home, Brian as a nuclear engineer, Claire as an overweight housewife, the jock (Emilio Estevez-can't remember his character's name) as an unemployed UAW autoworker...the weird chick (Ally Sheedy) as vice president of some fashion magazine...

Or Ally/Allison as the totally well-adjusted, happily married, centered, conservative religious mom who homeschools. :-)
