"Instant gratification" also factors into it. "I want it now!", "No waiting...", etc.

I have been wondering if the effect ever wears off. I have a nephew that still takes the ritalin, even after graduating from college. They are even prescribing it to adults now. It's no wonder that they are doing routine surveys on depression in doctor's offices, now.

I'm not sure if it does. For me, I have turned to God instead of drugs.

i used to believe it was bogus until my kid was born severely hyperactive. aderall gives my kid a chance to be normal. normal, not a zombie. that is not to say i believe that ADHD is not over diagnosed, it is. but it is very real for a few, believe me, i know.

scientology is a very real cult, though. no doubt about it and it pisses me off that sean is promoting it. it should piss off everyone who is informed.

It should also piss off everyone that Sean is taking medical advice from an "actress" slash activist. Fair and balanced would at least dictate having a psychiatrist on for an opposing view.

Having Kelly Preston pontificate about the dangers of pharmaceuticals is like having my dog lecture about astrophysics. What must Sean's producer be thinking? Hello??? Hannity's credibility is on the line here.

OK, one more reply...

I emailed Sean about this yesterday but I will be lost in the pile. More people need to email him to let him know just who these fanatics are and to stay far, far away from them.

I encourage everyone to send him an email about these nutcases.

Some folks may explode arguing with themselves.

LOL! I was thinking the same thing. This is one to sit back and watch.

Putting the whole Hannity/Preston/Scientology thing aside (where it belongs), I am very concerned about the rampant "straitjacketing" of our children.

Two weeks ago, I visited an 8 yr. old boy in a childrens mental hospital. It was his birthday, and my neighbor, who is this boy's babysitter 24/7 since he was 2 yrs. took me along.
His mother, an "artiste", couldn't find the time to be there.
She never can, since she is very busy being the biggest waste of air on the planet. This little boy loves the mental hospital. So much better than his Montessori school (32K per yr.) and the truckload of medications he has been taking since infancy. At the insistence of the school. All through last fall, he was regularly barred from his class and sent back to his psychiatrist. This boy was on 8 different medications in 4 months. Now he is a bona fide mental patient. And happy to be away from the nightmare life he got stuck with by the "progressive" mindset of his quasi-mother and her checkbook.

It's one thing to debate it as a topic, but to see what happens to these kids firsthand is frightening and heartbreaking. This boy just turned 8 yrs. old, and life being what it is, it is safe to say that he can be written off right now.

I also have direct experience with this issue. I have two sons, both diagnosed ADHD, both heavily medicated at their mother's insistence (we are divorced). I also come from a family of educators. In fact I'm the only adult in my family who is not working in that field.

I saw dramatic improvements in both of my children when I was able to get them OFF the meds and replace drugging with a program of my own design that included exercise, diet and a whole heap of personal attention.

Pill pushers looking to make a buck, Doctors who want to run their practices like an assembly line and LAZY teachers who don't want to (or can't) take questions that aren't in their lesson plans account for FAR more of these cases than the occasional child with a nervous system disorder (which, when carefully examined, will nine times out of ten, turn out to be a food allergy.)

(By the way CG, do I detect the faint smell of ozone?)

While I agree that the Cult of Scientology has no business setting public policy the sentiments with regards to drugging youngsters and not letting them be children are correct.

Are you implying that we should beware of Hannity because he's in bed with the Scientology Cultists?

Very slight smell of ozone. I hear thunder in the distance too!

I agree with you on excercise, diet, and attention. 9 out of 10 cases can be handled that way.

I suggest you call Hannity and tell him about this. I'm sure he is unaware of the connection and would appreciate your enlightenment. Send him an e-mail.

Exactly....

Yes, kids are being over-diagnosed and pigeon-holed. But it exists. For many, myself included, being diagnosed was like coming out of a cave...

Or getting a motor for our boat on the turbulent river of life.

I want to slap SH and Bortz silly some days. ;)

That and Soda Pop and Snack Cakes. Cut back on Sugar intake of many kids and you will probably see a decline in 'Hyperactivity". Those that are left will probably be the one who REALLY need medication.

Just my two cents. I'm not a doctor, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night...

With my kid we tried everything first. Diet, exercise, everything we could read up on, etc. Nothing worked. Then we went to a psychiatrist who prescribed the mildest medication in the smallest dosage. After a few weeks we were able to settle on the right stuff. Now my kid is able to enjoy a normal life. BTW, there is no public school involved here, we homeschool our kids. We are very well aware of what is going on with them.

I am also, as I indicated earlier, very well aware that meds for ADHD are grossly overprescribed. But if you think, as I once did, that stimulant prescription for hyperactivity is a joke then you are mistaken. It is the right thing in certain rare situations.

The point of my post (beginning to get lost in the ADHD discussion) was that Hannity is shilling (either knowingly or unwittingly) for a Hollywood nut cult. The fact that he would have an empty-headed actress on his show to speak authoritatively about medicine is not only laughable but hypocritical. He has, rightfully, in the past criticized other Hollywood idiots for hysterical testimony before Congress. Having Kelly Preston do it on his show is no better. The fact that she is a Scientology advocate just adds fuel to the fire.

Additionally, I think that Hannity needs to be told who he is in bed with. If you agree then please contact him. I have.

To the rest of you...

Spare me the condescending attitude about being a n00b needing enough rope or the broken clock analogy. I have lurked here off and on for years but have never felt the need to post before now. Save the snobbish attitude for those that deserve it.
