~The Dragon Flies' Lair~Thread XX
May 8, 2005 | bentfeather Poets of the Lair

Posted on 05/08/2005 8:31:59 PM PDT by Soaring Feather

My Dragon Fly and Me

If I could be a Dragon Fly
and wing my way through the sky
I would never be shy
just me and my Dragon Fly!

By moonlight we ride the wind
chase the comets tail for fun
by day we would hide from the sun
our fragile wings would come undone

On darkest nights we would use
fireflies as our guide
we would dip and we would glide
through the heavens open wide
and scatter diamonds in the night sky
my Dragon Fly and me...

And we would wing past our lovers
silent in the night...
to kiss their face in our flight
much to their surprise and delight
my Dragon Fly and me in sight...

Such a view do we share
away up here in the air
of breezes soft through our hair
my Dragon Fly and me a pair...

Bumper of My SUV
Chely Wright

Chely Wright

(Click pic for music)

I've got a bright red sticker on the back of my car,
Says: "United States Marines."
An' yesterday a lady in a mini-van,
Held up her middle finger at me.
Does she think she knows what I stand for,
Or the things that I believe?
Just by looking at a sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

See, my brother Chris, he's been in,
For more than 14 years now.
Our Dad was in the Navy during Vietnam,
Did his duty, then he got out.
And my Grandpa earned his Purple Heart,
On the beach of Normandy.
That's why I've got a sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

But that doesn't mean that I want war:
I'm not Republican or Democrat.
But I've gone all around this crazy world,
Just to try to better understand.
An' yes, I do have questions:
I get to ask them because I'm free.
That's why I've got a sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

'Cause I've been to Hiroshima,
An' I've been to the DMZ.
I've walked on the sand in Baghdad,
Still don't have all of the answers I need.
But I guess I wanna know where she's been,
Before she judges and gestures to me,
'Cause she don't like my sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

So I hope that lady in her mini-van,
Turns on her radio and hears this from me.
As she picks up her kids,
From their private school,
An' drives home safely on our city streets.
Or to the building where her church group meets:
Yeah, that's why I've got a sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

Now would be a good time for me to say something pithy and poignant, wouldn't it?

Can I use the excuse that I don't do my best thinking at this hour?

Here's a poem.

Carefully Worded

For those of us who are prone to skate,
Up to the limit allowed,
There’s a way that you can avoid a bad fate;
Stay ahead of your following crowd.

Don’t be too eager to use words stark,
Circumlocution will be your friend.
Some will be puzzled and left in the dark,
But you will be safe in the end.

Thin ice is not the danger you face,
But the scrutiny of those who attend,
So decorate words with camouflage lace,
And you will be safe in the end.

NicknamedBob . . . . March 16, 2005

I sure wish I knew what this guy was talking about!

The Holy Bible and the TV Guide

They lie on the table, side by side
The Holy Bible and the TV Guide.

One is well worn, but cherished with pride
(Not the Bible, but the TV Guide.)

One is used daily to help folks decide.
(No not the Bible; it's the TV Guide.)

As the pages are turned, what shall they see
Oh, what does it matter?.....turn on the TV.

Then confusion reigns, they can't all agree
on what they shall watch on the old TV.

So they open the book in which they confide
(No, not the Bible.....it's the TV Guide.)

The Word of God is seldom read.
Maybe a verse e'er they fall into bed.

Exhausted and sleepy and tired as can be...
not from reading the Bible - from watching TV.

So then back to the table, side by side,
lay the Holy Bible and the TV Guide.

No time for prayer....no time for the Word.
The plan of salvation is seldom heard.

But forgiveness of sin so full and free
is found in the Bible...........not on TV.

Patti

Chicken Soup

My nephew had a poultry farm! (His stock just numbered two.)
He planned to breed some more of them, but then one got the flu.
Now, Medicine is not his strength, but he worked for the group.
He nursed the sick one back to health. He fed it Chicken Soup!

That’s right, he killed the healthy one, to make the sick one strong.
And you may think this makes no sense, but then you have it wrong.
For business, it’s crazy, but that’s not where he leans.
He’ll be a whiz with all the biz of Government Machines!

Where this new math can operate, increases are called cuts,
And taxes are investments. In other words, it’s Nuts!
My brother’s son will fit right in. He thinks that way a lot.
If you call, and you hear strange advice, my nephew’s who you got!

Good afternoon Ms. Feather!

A Noon Song

There are songs for the morning and songs for the night,
For sunrise and sunset, the stars and the moon;
But who will give praise to the fulness of light,
And sing us a song of the glory of noon?
Oh, the high noon, the clear noon,
The noon with golden crest;
When the blue sky burns, and the great sun turns
With his face to the way of the west!

How swiftly he rose in the dawn of his strength;
How slowly he crept as the morning wore by;
Ah, steep was the climbing that led him at length
To the height of his throne in the wide summer sky.
Oh, the long toil, the slow toil,
The toil that may not rest,
Till the sun looks down from his journey's crown,
To the wonderful way of the west!

Then a quietness falls over meadow and hill,
The wings of the wind in the forest are furled,
The river runs softly, the birds are all still,
The workers are resting all over the world.
Oh, the good hour, the kind hour,
The hour that calms the breast!
Little inn half-way on the road of the day,
Where it follows the turn to the west!

There's a plentiful feast in the maple-tree shade,
The lilt of a song to an old-fashioned tune,
The talk of a friend, or the kiss of a maid,
To sweeten the cup that we drink to the noon.
Oh, the deep noon, the full noon,
Of all the day the best!
When the blue sky burns, and the great sun turns
To his home by the way of the west.

Good afternoon, ms marlowe!

Nice poem. I have not thought about noon as being a topic for a poem, but then I really don't think about topics to write about.

Hope you have a grand day.

Meeting at night

The gray sea and the long black land;
And the yellow half-moon large and low;
And the startled little waves that leap
In fiery ringlets from their sleep,
As I gain the cove with pushing prow,
And quench its speed i' the slushy sand.

Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;
Three fields to cross till a farm appears;
A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch
And blue spurt of a lighted match,
And a voice less loud, through its joys and fears,
Than the two hearts beating each to each!
