Vanity: Outlook won't let me send mail

Posted on 05/16/2005 8:14:05 PM PDT by jra

Okay, here's the deal. Broadband (cable) internet with two PC's. His email works fine. He uses Netscape Mail. She uses Outlook, and can receive okay, but cannot send.

Outlook gives an error message that the SMTP server timed out, to contact our ISP, but that can't be the true cause, since the other machine without Outlook works fine both coming and going. FWIW, the error number is 0x8004210B

Any Outlook experts care to opine?

If you have McAfee, check the settings. It alters Outlook settings to get in the way of incoming and outgoing mail. I don't have it but have a friend who struggled with the Outlook/McAfee combination for a month before throwing out McAfee and replacing it with Symantec (nee Norton).

It might be a anti-virus and-or fireware software problem.

Netscape & Outlook = different mail servers.

check that the smtp server name, in outlook, is correct.
in outlook, in the tools menu,
select accounts
double click your account
select the sever tab
verify the name is correct.

not much

good luck

This happened to me recently. Tried everything, couldn't figure it out. Finally called the tech support at my web hosting company and he suggested I change the port setting. Reason was that the provider (sbcpacbell) on occasion and without notice would change the port to foil spammers.

I changed mine to port 110 and instantly, problem was solved.

Or Pegasus. Both are great.

FWIW, there is spam mail out there that knocks outlook at from receiving.

It has a ::time out:: ::time out:: ::time out:: code. Not sure what it does. Once it hits Outlook, rebooting is the only way to fix it.

I assumed when you say "outlook" you meant outlook express. ( though the same process applies to outlook)

Yep, I visited that page. Question: Are you sure the machines have different SMTP servers based only on the fact that they use different email clients?

These machines share a router and modem.

Not arguing, just curious.

Like I said, I had the exact same problem. Could receive, but could not send. To change the port setting go :

tools >
accounts >
edit >
advanced settings > (or "select advanced settings")
Change the port setting to 110

Or first check the port setting on your husband's email and use that one. This should solve the problem.

1) Turn off "check outgoing mail" in McAfee.

2) If they are using an SSL connection for their e-mail, check what version of Outlook they are using. The initial shipment of Outlook XP (also known as Outlook 2002) had an error not allowing Outlook to properly send through SSL.

If neither of these options fixes the problem, freepmail me and I'll see if I can help further.

Port 110 is standard for POP, port 25 is standard for SMTP. If the problem is outgoing, SMTP is the culprit.

Depending on your service provider, many are blocking port 110. Try changing your STMP Port to 587.

I've had this problem with Netzero.

Outlook causes netzero to disengage. While your outgoing message is hung up, refresh your ISP mail program.

opps..." STMP" = SMTP

BTW...SBC is one of those that now blocks 25 and 110.

oops..I misunderstood you.
I assumed the Netscape mail was Netscape's web based email.

If Netscape mail is the email client within netscape, then the SMTP server name should be the same for both Netscape Mail & Outlook.

sorry....
