This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
But that got me thinking The who's who page is now out of date with all these new babies here now... Those of you who have new babies... please post a picture, either an earlier one or a current one, so we can add them to the page and keep everyone straight!
Ping to the new thread!
I'm here! I'm here!!
Thank you, thank you!
I need to start a new hobbit hole too... but they're harder.
It's a link-fest over there, that's why!
I've got horses fed and put out to pasture... As soon as the sun dries it out a little, I think I'll continue mowing today... whether Bay thinks it's a crap idea or not :~D
I put up a threadlogo22.jpg that we can use for now, if you want to go ahead and post the thread.
Thanks hon ;~D
It was tough just picking one...
OK - if everyone is going to be off somewhere and not chatting... I might as well go clean stalls.
Thanks for the picture -- love it. I will have more here pretty soon.
Got to take the Chevvy pickup into town to get the air conditioning fixed.
I'm still here lurkin.' Thanks you all!!
Just got in for lunch. I've been out on Harley. We trailed for a couple of hours, then did about 20 minutes in he arena.
I ventured out a little ways on to the ranch I rode at Mon. There is a break in his fence line back in the woods where I Ride, that's where I went in at. He knows about the break, but I think he's going to leave it for awhile. I hope. I'd like to ride back there, but the only other way to get there would be thur Beths property, and I don't really want to do that. It would mean either calling her every time, so she could move her horses, or going thru them which I don't want to do. As long as this fence is down, I can go anytime.
Becky
If he leaves it open, great... otherwise, maybe he'll put in some kind of handle gate or something!
He doesn't have stock in there?
If he ever talks about fixing it, Mack told me to tell him, we'd put up an Ark. Gate, with a pad lock for him.
Actually yes he has cattle in there. It is a cattle ranch. There is lots of cross fencing tho, so I don't think they can get up there. To get to the starting point of the ride Mon. we had to go thru 2 gates. During the ride I'll bet we went thru a dozen. This place is huge. It's hard to believe one man owns it all.
Becky
Wow.... I really hope I can come there one day and ride it with you!
The only wide open spaces we have here are tall timber... And those lands are usually owned by companies like Weyerhauser... And if no one has made a trail through it, you can't get through it, the undergrowth is too thick.
Luckily, there is a lot of it still, though.
Wow, a new thread! Cool.
Yup. Still has that new thread smell. ;~D
Well, I'm off to try to mow... if it's too wet still, I'll be back. If not.... I'll still be back later!
hey yall
Well, we will figure it out. I'll take some pictures and mail some grass to cowtown if necessary. It's definately walk as you eat pasture grass though.
I thoughtyou were going to be heading to Beckys one time for a vacation..........or did I get that wrong?
Did yall see that link Becky posted with swivel stirrups? I'm thinking about trying them but look at the item below. It made me laugh.
No - you're right... we were going to be down there to go riding... was going to be next week actually, or this week, I don't remember. We had to cancel. The trip to Arizona was so much work with finding a sitter that we felt a little daunted by trying to find one for an even longer two week trip... and we decided that $$$ wise, our priority had to be getting the horse trailer. Any trip would easily pay for half a trailer, no matter how frugal we tried to make it. So we cancelled. And we have a trailer. So I have to be happy about that.
It's only postponed though... I want to go down there sometime :~D
Post a link to it if you still have it.
Well getting a trailer that you can use whenever you have the truck sounds like the best plan. When the time comes for you to travel, things will fall into place. : )
We have had nothing but rain for the past two days. It is still hot, and I am glad the pastures are getting some water, but the kids are wanting to get out on their bikes etc. You can only do so much craft and painting!
I am going to be off here for a bit as Jacob wants to go on Nickjr.com. So I am going to load the dishwasher and grab a book. It's really time for the afternoon feed, but The heavens are flooding so I am waiting for it to die down a bit. : D
Oh, nearly forgot to say Thankyou for the new thread! : )
TUFFY! This guy needs help!
Get yourself under control and read your freepmail.
"TUFFY! This guy needs help!"
Hey, I can't control him. He's in rare form today, huh?
You got that right! : D
This reply is to MS Target
You mentioned that your horse ran down hill and you took a fall.
Do No try to turn a horse in a circle on a downhill. That will cause the horse to slip and possible fall with you under the horse. I have done a lot of x country and event riding on thoroughbreds. The best way to do hills is face then straight down and half halt at the top . Make sure the horse is listening. Then ask him to go forward
and you shove your legs forward and lean back. That sets your seat deep in the saddle and gives you leverage when the horse tries to go fast. Also You won't get dumped. Make the horse literally sit on his rump if the hill is very steep and take baby steps down the hill. Do not let the horse turn sideways , Very dangerous since they can slip if a dispute between rider and horse happens.
If the horse is facing straight down he can only fall on his butt and no harm done.
Make sure the horse is on the bit and does not have his neck stretched out. Then this horse is in no danger and takes the hill slowly. Once he is obedient you can go faster but allways sit back. If he bucks , you won't fall over his neck.
I have trained horses to do 60 an 80 degree slopes at walk , trot and gallop. It can be done.
Ok. Check your email in a minute.
Are you sure you can't access your private FR mail? It shouldn't be any different than posting on this site.
Read your regular email. No porn involved, I promise. Why are you trying to get on those sites anyway????
No no no Bjorn isn't a tennis player, it's that crazy woman that wore the swan dress to the awards program.
LOL probably. But her name isn't Byorn, it's Byork.
Thanks for the detailed reply - it was FReeper 'estrogen' who had the fall on the hill... estrogen, see Rhiannon's reply above at 38.
Well, we have 'chance of thunderstorms' predicted, but so far I've had sun to mow in.
Getting some great exercise, I am. I swear I would never walk that much just to walk. But I'll follow a mower anywhere.
I need this excercise, I'd like to lose weight for Bay's sake, if not my own... heck, even for the sake of my husband ;~D And though I've always been sortof 'hobbity', I have always been strong and able to work hard. Lately I've gotten muscle cramps with very little work, my back hurts shoveling stalls... and ~gasp~ my ankles are swelling like an old woman! Dang! So I need this mowing, and any other work around the place I can find.... something more active than just posting on FReeRepublic, which as not been good for my figure.
Quick post, I've got JP.
You're welcome anytime you can make it.
Kristy had to go visit her grandfather in the hospital, but she brought her horse along with JP:). I think she's going to run in the arena. I may have some interesting pictures later.
Becky
Good!
