Do We Know God?

Read:
John 17:1-5

This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. —John 17:3

Bible In One Year: Isaiah 10-12

cover American writer Mark Twain was known for his wit and charm. On a trip to Europe he was invited to dinner with a head of state. When his daughter learned of the invitation, she said, "Daddy, you know every big person there is to know except God." Sadly, that was true, because Mark Twain was an unbelieving skeptic.

That daughter's comment should cause us to ask ourselves if we know God. We may be blessed with life-enriching friendships, acquainted with a wide circle of important people, but do we know God? And is our knowledge of Him more than second-hand information or speculation, the things we might read in books?

Jesus wanted His disciples to have an intimate knowledge of God. He prayed, "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent" (John 17:3). This knowledge is intensely personal, and is gained only through a deep, prolonged friendship. Indeed, the knowledge referred to in this text and elsewhere in Scripture is compared with the intimacy of husband and wife as they become one (Genesis 4:1).

We can have that knowledge as we spend time talking with God, reading His Word, and sharing His love with the world. —Vernon Grounds

Into the heart of Jesus
Deeper and deeper I go;
Seeking to know the reason
Why He should love me so. —Smith

It's not enough to know God with your head; you must know Him in your heart.

Do more of the first ( a given ) and the other will follow.

Now that you evened your hair up, I am not going to look at you from the back for a few weeks.

Straight across cut hair looks weird. Well to me anyway...

Happy Tentth of July.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE FURRED KIND

A friend of my sister's gave her a new lawn mower
So, she decided to drop by to see if I could get it to run
Well, my four stray cats were up and running
Wanted to have some fun and definitively show her
Who's Who. What's What. And why did you not call ahead?

Smudge, Fats, Tux and Puddin' sat four abreast
Watching patiently as I rolled the mower o'er the grass and started some tests
While Sis talked to the felines and tried to make friends
Their green eyes tracked, but none did quaver or bend

Only I knew that they were waiting for their food
But to have said so would have been callous and rude
So, I glimpsed as my sister inched glacially closer
My four furry protectors have little time for Posers

First, Puddin' surrendered to my sister's fingers along her chin
Then Fats started rubbing and brushing her knees
While Smudge and Tux stoically stood their ground
Ears straight up. Their Purr Boxes barely making a sound

The cats still stayed put when the mower finally tried to crank
There oil in the crank and gas in the tank
So, I made up a list for my Sis about who to see and what to do
While my Sentinels watched her leave under a sky of blue

It's not a straight cut at all, and it's still long. I gotta pic, but I'm afraid to show you. You'll probably laugh.

I don't think this is complete, but I'll post it anyway.

Raised Voice

In my supplication I only ask
	this day
That you will give Your Love
	to those I love
To increase my sphere
	and to make it strong

How could I forget the source
	of all eternal grace
	How could I turn
From Your light, Your face?

Forgiveness for my wandering
Answers to my pondering
All I have to do
	is ask
All I have to do
	is know.

Jehovah, You are my heaven.

Thank you, LifeOrGoods.

That is beautiful. I thank you for sharing it with us.

Instead of a daily thread, I will be posting a Poetry and Potpourri thread at A Few of FR's Finest once every 6 weeks or so. Some of our poets are now posting at the Finest. I hope you will join us there; may I add you to my ping list?

This is an interesting site and your words of encouragement are wonderful!

I have a general question that someone reviewing this site might be able to answer. I see so much spiritual poetry signed "–Sper", but I have been unable to determine the identity/history of this poet.

Can anyone help?

Most of the poetry written at Amy's place is now posted there.
Amy had to give up the thread daily and now posts when she can at The Finest.
I'll ping you to todays Daily Bread.
