Birthday presents for an 11 y.o. girl?
July 8, 2005 | self / vanity

The little girl next door will be turning 11 next month. I would like to get her a birthday present. As of now, I am stuck. Stuck as the proverbial bug in the rug.

It should not be anything inappropriate or inappropriately expensive.

She can handle tech stuff, but I'm not sure that's the best way to go.

Any suggestions?

I always bought books. My daughter got Audubon bird books, flower books, tree books, you name it. She still has them, today. Don't waste money on stuff that is gonna be garbage before the first set of batteries goes dead.
The best thing you can ever pass down is knowledge, and curiousity.

I have a niece about that age. She always asks for art supplies. I collect stuff on sale, ect and put it in a plastic 'envelope' (for case files) and send it along. The envelope is so all the little markers and crayons and paper have a home when her mom wants it all cleaned up.

Done. Thank you.

I got her a Cube and a Shania Twain CD. I figure the Cube will appeal to her intellectual side and the CD will appeal to her artistic side. She has both.

That's fine, but don't get too excited.

I don't bother her -- or anyone else -- and I am working on my drinking problem. It isn't easy, but I am getting there.

That would work, but I'm not qualified to select them.

There are a few threads about C.S. Lewis books "The Chronicles of Narnia." You could find out from her mom if she has read them. If not the first book is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
I have been thinking about getting it for my daughter. I never read them when I was a kid. It might be a good gift. Failing that, a gift certificate to Amazon.com is good for her to pick out her own book or DVD.

Get her started early on the coolest thing around come December - a nice edition of "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe!"

You beat me to it! That is an EXCELLENT choice for a girl turning 11 (or anyone turning anything, for that matter).

Rings favors boys, Narnia favors girls. Plenty of people love them both, of course.

I always gave books to my friend's daughter, birthdays 10-14, christmas 10-14 (as well as CDs and other stuff) then I started getting her DVDs after she turned 14, but good books are always a great gift!

Her mom told me that she had a nice book collection I gave her, and she loved the books. She would get them and lay them all out and just look at them, very impressed with her collection. She read them all and loved them!

How about a book? The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, maybe.
