More on athletes...

Really, I would have to say that the best athlete I have ever seen is / was a junior girl on one of the local high school’s basketball teams.

She is not big, but she was determined.

She came out of half-time several points down, and she put down two three-pointers within two minutes.

I don’t know how much you all know about basketball, but doing that ain’t easy. I don’t think I could do one in an hour with no opposition. She did two.

The importance of this was that it inspired the rest of her teammates. Several of her teammates then did the same. They won the state championship. For a small, rural school, this was a big deal.

I usually refrain from using names, but I will this time. Her name is Emily Rose. She comes from Spotswood High School in Virginia. (That’s not located in Spotswood, btw).

Emily just decided that she wasn’t going to lose.

She’s too small to be a career basketball player, but she will be something.

I sent the team a dozen roses, roses in her honor. They deserved it. I should have sent more.

Don't worry, she'll probably become a doctor.

Harry,

She's a junior in high school.

WTF is wrong with you, man?

He's "The Other Harry." He's not "Dirty Harry."

I only discovered high school girls' basketball last year, when the Spotswood girls team got into the state championship play-offs. I had to go see.

Let me tell ya: A more exciting sport does not exist. If you've never been to a game, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.

I just about pooped my panties.

And, for the record, I never personally approached either Emily or any of the other girls. Nor did I use my name on the card that went with the flowers. I just congratulated them on their wonderful season.

I like sports, but I am not into bothering young girls. I don't go there.

I would like to meet their coach sometime (a male). This was some feat. You can't imagine. It's just a little school from a small town, and they won it all.

It wasn't only Emily. In each game during the play-offs a different girl stood out. One girl -- Katy Larson -- scored 27 points in a previous game. There were also others.

That is why I sent them the flowers.

What I didn't expect is that -- according to the school secretary -- they divided them up. A dozen was not enough. Three dozen would not have been too many.

Hmm. Two 3s in two minutes. Not bad. Given the choice of watching high school basketball and reading a book, I'd read the book.
