Please show me one posting where I ever mentioned Linus's Dad, either in name or by reference. You also are eligible for bonus points if I ever said he's a commie.
I've always said use what works for you. I work in a Netware shop - we're converting over to FreeBSD and linux slowly but surely. I think MS is great in some situations - we have some Windows servers, and they have the best office suite.
The fact that linux is, or can be, free does add to the equation in its favor. If I had the choice between free MS or free linux, MS might win every contest, but if the choice is between free linux and expensive MS, linux wins more often than not.
Luckily for me, MS's cost is not a factor since I have an MSDN subcription. Even so, I would still pick it over Linux, in most cases, because of ease of use. Someday this may change, but that day is just not here yet.
Troll Alert level 5!
N3WBI3, for someone that always accuses other's of being a troll you truly are the black pot.
I am guessing by your handle that you are a programmer. I am not. I am a network manager. Were I a programmer, I would most likely be as pro-MS as anyone could be: they make great development tools. Being the network manager (and unix sys admin), I look at what does what I need it to do with the least amount of my attention, and for the most part, MS is not as good in those respects, although they have made great strides since the NT4 days.
I have had Netware servers with over 2 years of uptime - it's hard to top that.
Oh, just an FYI, Apple's OSX is a GREAT desktop environment. I have an XP box and an Apple box on my home network and they are both good, but that Apple box is *really* nice.
I've developed in pretty much every language there is and used pretty much every tool. To me, MS studios are the best IDE's available.
MS is not as good in those respects, although they have made great strides since the NT4 days.
I agree, Win2K is probably one of the more stable environments out there, except for maybe Red Hat.
I have had Netware servers with over 2 years of uptime - it's hard to top that.
Haven't used Netware in a long time. I did use it for about 6 months and you are right, it was stable from what I recall. The admin we had liked it a lot.
My whole problem with Apple is I want to be able to pick & choose my hardware, not be locked into one that may not feel fits my needs. I have used Apples in the past and found them to be enjoyable. I used them before they incorporated windows into them, so that tells you how long ago that was. I think it was an Apple IIG or something like that.
bttt
There is a screen-shot on the Net-ware site showing over 6 years of uptime.
I'm sorry I thought 24%was a big chunk of the pie... Those are the Linux numbers for servers, which are growing every year. Of course if 24% is not a big chunk that means the 59% MS has is the only big chunk out there.
BTW, that BIG chunk is almost nothing and is even less to crow about when it's free.
Again 24% of the servers out there say you're wrong, and if you're talking about the desktop well Linux was not initially designed or sold for that. The first killer app on Linux was a web server, not an office suite. But its making nice headway and is competing with Apple.
The fact its free is a red herring, its in the server market its done well and in the server market licensing (according to you) is not a consideration..
No but you buying a really expensiive coat does not mean youll be warmer than somthing I find at the salation army..

The usual argument, huh?
At no point did I specifically say server, did I?
And I notice when people do the boring "windows sux, Linux is better" argument they never say ONLY windows server, now do they? No they don't, but the minute you bring up marketshare they pull the server argument.
But its making nice headway and is competing with Apple.
oooooohhhh, competing with Apple!! That's kind of like sayig UPN is competing with WB in the TV viewership market.
No, but it'll smell better.
Of course you did'nt ignoring half the picture actually gave you a point why not just ignore servers. Hell I guess SOLARIS, AIX, et al. are crap because they have even lower desktop penetration than Linux right?
And I notice when people do the boring "windows sux, Linux is better" argument they never say ONLY windows server, now do they?
Youre talking to someone who has said 2kpro is one of the best desktops ever made.. but go ahead keep trying to paint me as an anti ms fanatic...
Depends who wearing it...
