Seeking advice on Remington 870 shotgun purchase (vanity)

Posted on 09/06/2005 12:52:52 PM PDT by jsh3180

Looking to buy a Remington 870 shotgun. Trying to decide between the Marine Magnum or the Law Enforcement model with a parkerized finish.

I live in the Florida Keys, harsh salt/marine environment.

Any advice on which is better, the nickel marine magnum or the parkerized finish?

Thanks

If you are looking at it for self/home defense.... consider a good .45 acp pistol... just in case.

Yeah I have been told that the parkerized would be better here. They tell me a dent or chip in the nickel finish and rust will occur.

Yes it's definitely for home defense. We got a big run on firearms here in the wake of Katrina.

Thanks for the input

If you've got the bucks [one grand plus], look at the Wilson Scattergun Technologies 870. Got all the bells and whistles: extended mag, parkerized finish, tactical light in forearm, side saddle ammo holder, ghost rings and fiber optic sights. Go with parkerized in any case.

Have you looked at the Winchester 1300 Coastal Marine? Stainless barrel with nickel coat - even if the nickel gets chipped, it won't rust.

Don't overlook a Ruger mini-14 or better yet a mini-30 in stainless steel, relatively inexpensive and a hell of a lot more range, just in case.

It don't matter what color it is, keep it clean, oiled and loaded.

I prefer my AK-based shotgun. Slugs travel a surprisingly long way and are fairly accurate. :)

Mini-30 ammo could be a problem in a hitch. Go with a Mini-14.

The finish won't matter unless you plan to store it in the bilge of your boat.

One of the great things about living here is that none of my guns rust.

"I prefer my AK-based shotgun."

Would that be a Saiga? I've heard pretty good reviews on them. It's no Beretta but then again it's cheap and reliable. I almost bought one but I'm getting close to what NYS considers the limit (20 guns). I have to choose carefully at this point. I only have a few more to go. I guess I could sell some but that would go against family tradition. I would really like an MP5 NYS compliant variant. I shot a real one in the service and fell in love with it.

While nickle finishes and stainless barrels are great, many internal and external parts are usually made of other steel products that do rust. As Travis said, unless you plan to neglect the thing the finish really doesn't matter.

The high capacity 7-9 shot tubes are great to have as well.
