Trying to set up a home network
Me, myself, and I | 09/06/2005 | Tennessee_Bob

Posted on 09/06/2005 5:52:41 PM PDT by Tennessee_Bob

Ok, let me get a couple critical things out of the way first.

Yes, I am logged in.

Never met a moose.

I don't have a sister.

I do like cheese.

I am not running CP/M.

I have Googled this.

I'm pretty sure it's Bush's fault.

I hope I got everything out of the way, but I'm sure if I didn't, it will be pointed out in a bold, 24 point font.

Yesterday, I had two machines, one running XP Home, one running Win2k. After fixing a friend of mine's computer (why is it that the only time women ever call me is when they need help with their computers? Oh, sure, they act all interested for thirty minutes or so, but then, invariably, the conversation goes, "Oh, Bob, do you still work on computers?) I then had three machines - the third is an old Gateway 750. It runs fine. I brought it home, and burned down the drive and then installed Win2K Server. I have legitimate version of the software - don't ask why.

In any case, I installed it just to see if it would install, sort of a benchmark test, if you will.

So, now I have three machines, and I'd like to build a network with them. Why? Because when I go for an interview, I'd like to be able to say that I have some experience beyond just seeing the stuff boot up.

Assume the following:
I have a cable modem
I have a Viewsonic wireless router, which also acts as a four port router
Each machine has a valid, functioning NIC onboard.

Two of the NICs are hard NICS - cable has to plug in to communicate, the third one is a wireless card.

For 25 percent of the semester grade, can someone point me towards a decent "do it yourself" guide to building a server based home network system?

Any assistance - either personal experience or telling me where to go - and if you knew where I worked, you'd know that I'm already in Hell, so that's not a valid answer - would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help in advance.

BTW, does anyone out there think that there might be something possibly serious with this lady who gave me the computer? I mean...well...never mind.

Shouldn't this be excerpted? Do you have a working link? (sorry, you asked for it!)

First, check your beeber to see if it is stuned. Then take a shower. All your PC are belong to us.

The computer was free, so for right now, this is a low buck project. I don't want to go with a beeber out of the back of someone's car - I want a high quality beeber - so I'm saving my pennies for that.

Kitty time in the sandbox?

Go to http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/networking - getting Win2k to talk with Windows Home can be a pain in the rump, but it is possible. Read a lot, play some, and you'll get it up and running.

Oh.. Well.. Darn it, I figure it also might be fun to point you towards Microsoft's Networking Setup Wizard located on your control panel on XP Home - Service pack 2. But seriously, spend some time on those faqs first - mucho useful information.

Well, she's pretty, and she's very nice, and she thinks my daughter is awesome - so it could be series. And no, she's not huge - but what about the network??

You're going to need plenty of antifreeze--Zerex. None of that Prestone crap, it's gotta be Zerex. And ball bearings. It's all about ball bearings.

Actually, I prefer to browse in assembler, run through my TI-90 graphing calculator. Yeah, it's a little slow, and seeing pictures is really a bear - but it's a challenge, and that's what I like :)

I'm open to suggestions on that avenue. First time setting this kind of thing up, and I figured that this was the place to come for general harassment and good ideas - scary, eh?
