My congradulations and thank you for the education.

“Manga” is the Spanish word for sleeve, so I wondered what the devil you were doing drawing/painting sleeves. :)

Also, now I know what one of the things my nephew does for a living. He is a professional animated cartoonist, and on the side he likes to draw “manga” characters to relax. I didn’t know these manga characters had a name and was a specialized Japanese art. Next time I talk to “R,” his aunt will sound a little intelligent (hopefully).

Other than strictly anatomical illustrations, there's no nudity (certainly nothing risque) in DRAW MANGA. I stick to PG-13 standards in my books. After all, my mom reads them!

This one's a little different. I think it very nice that there are Freepers who are successful artists. B-Chan is usually self effacing on the subject, but I think most of us understand that many comic artists have highly developed skills. Better skills than some fine artists in fact.

I draw and paint nudes all the time, some risque, since my primary focus is the human form. My Mom, an almost stereotypical blue-haired grandma, enjoys my work. (Or says she does, at any rate.) Since most of my fine arts work leans abstract, maybe she doesn't know what she's looking at. Nah, she knows what she's looking at. Of course, Manga is mainly aimed at a younger audience (with the exception of Manga erotica, which is another form entirely).

The first depiction of a nude woman I ever saw was one of my grandfather's sculptures: a third-scale, reclining nude in wood, sculpted when he was in his thirties. My brother and I thought it was really cool until we found out who the model was. Talk about your icky Oedipal moment. (My grandmother wasn't about to have him 'import' a model for that kind of work.)

Sorry. Rambling. Congratulations on publication of your book. Since my teenage daughter adores Manga, you've given me a great Xmas idea.

BTW, my daughter, who just graduated from art school (photography) called me up the other day - she and an artist friend were discussing Rembrandt, but weren't really sure what works he was really famous for, though they thought mainly the self portraits. I tend to agree, though the Night Watch bubbled up from my long distant education.

I'd be hard-pressed to say which works Rembrandt is most famous for, since he worked in such a variety of media--etching, pen and ink, brush and ink, charcoal, oils--that no single piece springs to mind when I think of him; it all kind of comes together in my head like a big, colorful gestalt. I guess his final self-portrait and 'Aristotle Contemplating the Bust of Homer' would be considered his more famous oils. The reason I like Rembrandt so much is that--when viewing his works--I can imagine the thinking that went on behind a given piece: the way he solved technical problems, the way he approached his subjects. I think I understand, for example, why he was driven to render religious subjects in spite of the demands of the market, which was spare for religiously themed work at that time and place (much as it is now). I could be fooling myself, of course: empathy run amok--but feel that I know him.

I sent Sam my website URL. Didn't flash it on an open post for a few reasons: One, it feels a little unseemly to post the URL of what is essentially a commercially-oriented on-line portfolio on FR, and Two, I've had a few serious-sounding threats from some more, er, unstable posters--one badly disguised neo-nazi, in particular, and one very, very strange cockfighting fan with whom I took serious issue. I don't want to make finding me that easy. I'm too old to handle housecalls from bloodsport enthusiasts and Stormfront trolls, although a slightly younger me might've welcomed the prospect.
