Are you going to wsitch farriers or stay with the same guy?

No I'll stay with the same guy. This isn't the farriers fault. I told him to correct the forging and he did it the only way he knew how. The vet said it was a great shoeing, he had everything right, it was just his method of correcting the problem. She said alot of the old school guys correct the problem like that. I think her thinking on the subject is something that's a new development....

Now it remains to be seen how he will take the advise:). She told me to be careful how I approached him about it, not to critizise but to discuss and suggest:). She has dealt with Chris before, and says him and her have learned to work with each other, took awhile, but they can now:). He's coming Mon. morning. I didn't tell him over the phone all the particulars, just that I needed some things changed on his back shoes. I am fully prepared to apologize to him for "making" him do what he did, and now asking him to undo it.

OK - so it sounds like it'll be a little bit of a long process to get him back. But in the mean-time you can walk on trail, right? What about the ride in April?

What is Knox Gelatin? I'll go look that up.

Good approach ;~D

You could also see if the vet will talk to him directly... that it's "doctor's orders" and that she's trying an unusual approach.

I've often wondered if my vet and Mark (my farrier) should talk. Although Mark's an excellent farrier, but he doesn't really believe Bay has Navicular symptoms, and I wonder if that's keeping him from doing everything he might otherwise suggest doing if he did believe it. Bay's doing fine, but he's only in thin leather pads, not in wedge pads or bar shoes or the other steps I see people take for a horse with Navicular.

The ride in April is iffy right now. Not only may his feet still not be right, but if they are I'm not sure what kind of shape he will be in. I won't take a horse I don't think is in tip top shape. If all I can do for the next 12 weeks is ride a few times a week and only at a walk I don't think he could be in shape. I'm frustrated with having to maybe put competing on hold "again" because of dealing with a horse issue, but that's life.

Knox Gelatin is what you make jello out of. I've heard about people useing it before for hoof growth. I think people use it to help bone and fingernails, and such.

She told me to have him call her if he didn't understand what I tell him. She said she wouldn't have a problem with that at all.

Knox Gelatin huh! Is it a powder? Is it sweet?

Sorry about the delay....I feared you might say that, the timing's just too close.

Teri, the vet said, that farriers can usually fix any foot problem, the thing about that tho is they never learned to think of the "whole" horse and how changing something like the horses stride affects other parts. Makes sense to me, just because I know how changing shoes, like wearing heels (which I don't do:), can make your whole darn body hurt.

As far as Bay I'd say, if it's not broke don't fix it:) Nothing the vet or the farrier could do will cure it. So if he's not having problems I'd leave it alone.

Chris is a good farrier. I know you all seem to be skeptcal of him, don't blame you. But he has shoed for me for 8-9 years. In that time, I'd say he only screwed up twice, last year and then a few years ago when I quit him for awhile, but that really wasn't over a bad shoe job. And in all that time, I bet I've only had horses loose shoes maybe 10 times. That's almost only once a year. That's not bad considering how much I use to ride. What I learned yesterday, may be as new to him as it was to me. But after watching him trot by me and being so short strided, it makes sense. So I want to try this approach.

It's a powder, you by it at the grocery store. We gave it to a horse before, I can't remember why now. Teri said most horses will eat it because it's a bit sweet. You can give powdered milk too, but most horses won't eat that, so she said try the gelatin.

I googled it to see what you were going to find, and it's for nails, cartlidge, bones etc.

Thanks:). There is still one in late May. If I can go to that one, it won't be so bad, and I'm pretty sure this stuff would be resolved by then, surely:) Becky

So when do you get Tweek back?

How's Pippin doing without her?

Makes a lot of sense about the shoer... I'm not really skeptical of his skill at all. I just understand the difficulty sometimes in approaching shoers about a change in philosophy. ;~D

We just called and we can go get Tweek any time, so we're off :~D

Pippin's a little frantic and needy without her. He's looking for her, definately.

I just don't know what to do if they tell me I need to keep her quiet, or keep her away from Pippin. She'd be miserable if I kept her caged.

Tweek's back home, and getting some comfort from our old Tom cat, who mothers her. She seems like she feels good, now the challenge will be to keep her quiet. They gave me a painkiller/sedative and a syringe I'm supposed to give her every 8 hours: Buprenex.. I extract it from the bottle with the needle and then take the needle off and squirt it in her mouth with the syringe. That's a new one for me.

Will that keep her quiet, is that the point or does she hurt? Did Pippin act like he was glad to have her back?

It is very very cold here today, the wind is terrible. Suppose to be like that till Mon.

I'm going to a great nieces first birthday parthy this afternoon. I have Blake and JP. This will be fun.

I ~think~ the point is both... Although it seems the pain would keep her quiet... if she feels good, seems she'd be more likely to be too active. I dunno

Pippin's little nose is in the picture too, he's curious about her, following her around now... They're happy to see her but she smells funny, I think.

oooh - cold here too.... everything's frozen this morning... had ice in the hose. I prefer this to the rain, it's clear and bright, but I wish I'd remembered to stuff the hose under the house last night ;~D

I'm going visiting this afternoon too.

That picture makes my heart melt. I can't believe what a lovely cat she is turning into from that little ball of fuzz. (Despite that rather undignified position she's in in the picture) ;-) Her markings fit her just right.

All right I've gotta stop freepin, get off my butt, eat lunch, get things together and head off to the barn. Hopefully I won't freeze.

It doesn't look too bad. Really clean. So what happened, did the vet say? What causes a seroma?
