Down but never out, actor Sylvester Stallone is forging a movie comeback for the unlikely boxing champion, Rocky Balboa, who sent Stallone's star soaring and won Oscars nearly 30 years ago.

Stallone, 59, will reprise his role in the sixth Rocky film, titled Rocky Balboa, playing the Philadelphia boxer who is lured out of a long retirement to fight a championship bout while dealing with personal tragedy outside the ring.

"Rocky Balboa is about everybody who feels they want to participate in the race of life, rather than be a bystander.

You're never too old to climb a mountain, if that's your desire," Stallone said in a statement.

The original Rocky in 1976 told of a lowly club fighter in Philadelphia who gets his one shot at the championship title and loses in a split decision but wins a personal triumph. It proved to be a box office smash, raking in $US117 million ($A153.72 million) and winning Oscars, the US film industry's top honours, for directing, editing and best film.

Stallone, who also wrote the screenplay, was nominated for best actor but lost to Peter Finch for Network.

Most successor films proved strong with fans as a parade of high-profile pugilists battled Rocky, including actors Mr T and Dolph Lundgren. But Rocky V failed to excite fans and earned a meager $US41 million ($A53.87 million) at US and Canadian box offices.

MGM President Dan Taylor said he was convinced that "a whole new generation of filmgoers (is) ready to be introduced" to Rocky Balboa and his life in and out of the ring.

The new film will begin production early next year and is backed by MGM, Columbia Pictures, and Revolution Studios.

This has to be a joke. I've also read an unconfirmed script that Rambo has become a socialist, UN toady in Rambo 4:

http://movies.peterlisbon.com/artigos/art_ramboladen.html

If this is true, Rambo 4 is going to be a politically correct film with themes of Rambo fighting global poverty ,etc. If this is true, then you won't find me at the video store or the theaters. I liked the old Rambo where he killed the enemies du jour. I thought the original Rambo 4 script was for Rambo to fight the Taliban and UBL.

Burgess meredith was 69 when he starred in the first rocky as a crusty old boxing coach:

And now, stallone will be just 9 years younger than that when he's starring as a boxer???

This reminds me of an old Weird Al Yankovic song from his "Food" album, call The Rye and the Kaiser. In the song, it seems that Rocky now owns the neigbhood deli. He's old and he's fat, but he still likes to go in the back and beat up on a side of beef.

Weird Al thought the song was a spoof on Rocky II: The Eye of the Tiger. Little did he know that it was really a spoof of Stallone.

Weird Al also did as stunningly hilarious spoof of Rambo
in his movie, UHF. It's uneven and Al's a lousy actor,
but it has some scenes, especially those including Michael Richards (Kramer).
