I am a left handed crocheter; have not tackled any projects in the past couple of years, but have made over the years: afghans, kid's purses, scarves for mr. uvular, several filet crochet pieces, such as a curtain panel, antimacassers(you put 'em on the back of a chair), and a scenic Home Sweet Home wall hanging. Over the years, I've probably pulled out as much thread and yarn as I have finished!

Also sew, mostly curtains, and if I buy curtains, I'll put my own trims on them.

I've made simple curtains, but nothing too complex.

I too have ripped out lots. Still do. Mostly abandoned projects that I know I will never finish, but that's life!

Well, I found a leather supply shop online called, "Brettuns Village." The folks there said they'd send me free samples with details and descriptions of all their products after I asked a couple of questions about leather to use for plaiting bullwhips.

THAT'S how you run a business!

These folks sell huge amounts cheap and they seem to go above and beyond for my business. I picked up my last purchase from Tandy Leather two days ago for my next whip project. Never going back again.

I'm currently working on a 12-plait, 10-foot Australian bullwhip and hope to be done in three to five days.

Am still happily churning out scarves for all the hapless victims who will get them for Christmas (LOL!). I may get brave and try one of those cute knitted purses to see if they are "cool" enough for our nieces.

I have started making some little socks for my niece in an old shale pattern.

It uses a multiple of 11, so I cast on 44 stitches in fingering yarn (she's still pretty little).

The leg of the sock is done this way:

Knitting in the round, k the first round.
next round:
(k2tog 2 times, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo k1, yo, k2 tog twice) around.

next three rounds, k all.

Repeat for desired length.

Me! I finished the Shepherd's Bush set of four Nativitiy ornament designs. I am having it matted and framed, it will be displayed in my home for the Christmas season. My goal was to start and finish the other two ornaments, I might make that goal. However getting them framed will take place after Christmas...

The quilts and afghans are for the grownups....now to work on hubby's present...what to give him???? (thinking, thinking)

I am entirely impressed.

All I have completed are one set of baby socks.

I am working on a second pair of socks, these for a girl instead of a boy.

happiness is going to your favorite needlework shop and finding they had just the book you were looking for.

Happiness is discovering that they actually make crochet hooks in size 16 (at that size, you use it with sewing weight threads like when trimming hankies)

Unhappiness is having the weather getting ready to change and your hand hurt enough you don't know if you're going to pick your needles up again for hours.

Prayers for your talented, but hurting hands.

I've been thinking about your comment the other day about making scarves: that you go with the width you like and just go to town on the pattern. That's kind of what I'm doing in the learning process. Most the patterns I've seen recently (even in some of the links you posted) have you knit the long way, with a bunch of stitches but just a few rows along the length. I wouldn't like that, because what if I decided the length was wrong, or just changed my mind? I don't understand this.

I have made them that way, but I really prefer making them across the short way. They can be quicker, longwise, though, and some effects you can't get knitting them the other.

I guess it counts what you want it to look like.

It's my turn to take care of the church linens this month, and I am going crazy wanting to do some fancy work and replace the lavabo towels with something nicer. I haven't committed to anybody about doing this, because I don't know if my hands will gripe a lot. But I've been collecting old books and new about church linens.

My secret desire, I think, is to make a fine linen altarcloth with hand crocheted lace and cutwork and whitework.

Maybe I ought to keep working on my niece's socks for right now, instead.

I also prefer the short way, although I see your point about it being quicker the long way. But for those of us still in the "obsessively counting" stage, 15 or 21 is a lot easier to keep track of than 99, LOL! And I think it is easier to learn on regular needles than on circular, which is what I believe it would take for doing it the long way.

It's nice to plan to do those church projects, but I think you're smart to keep it to yourself until later, maybe even until they are done. I would be interested to see what kind of patterns you're reviewing for this.

I will do scarves until I get really, really good at them, and I'm ready to move on to shawls.

Once you get comfy with the straights, you will find circulars are even nicer, cause you are even less likely to drop stitches with them, and they seem to distribute the weight better. I almost never use single pointed needles any more. Mostly I use circulars and double points.

Knitting can take longer, but I like how it drapes better. And it hurts my hands less.

On the needles right now, I have socks, two scarves and a sweater. I tend to be a butterfly and jump from project to project.

Perhaps other needleworkers have handled this: my mom died and left many unfinished projects. Do y'all go ahead and finish those projects, putting aside your own, or do you put hers on the back burner waiting for a break in your or someone else's schedule, or do you just say, sorry, I'm not interested in those projects? I have a lot of emotions tied up in whatever answer I pick.

I put my mom's away until I was ready to deal with it. Mostly, I ended up salvaging the materials instead of completing hers. Different tastes and interests, in part.

Today, I have been working on a scarf in Red Heart's Symphony yarn, which is sort of a fake mohair type...knits up pretty, but is not my favorite yarn to work with. But it'll make a nice gift. My favorite scarf pattern: multiple of 3 (in this case, 12, but maybe should have been 15), plus 2 stitches.

Sl 1, (k2 p1,) across. K the last stitch. Makes a nice reversable, non-stretchy rib, nicer looking than garter by a long shot. Doing it on 10 1/2 needles. After working on size 1's for fingering weight socks, these needles feel HUGE!

I'm still on "knit only", but have gotten a better feel for needle size and gauge to make them look more like I want them to look. The eyelash yarn I'm using is Bernat Boa, Cardinal (red and black).

I looked at that Symphony yarn the other day, and decided against it. Maybe it just seemed too "stringy" for me right now. And I saw a cute, but tiny, swatch done in a baby "carrier" yarn on what must have been almost non-existent needles!

And I picked up a free pattern for a "fur" stole and cuffs made with the dark brown mink Bernat eyelash yarn that looks intriguing.

Signing off for tonight, and happy dreams to you all!

I was lucky, I was working on circulars, so I didn't lose any! It's hard, though; 29 inches long, 50 inches wide, and every inch of it's garter stitch. Next time, I should try a lace pattern just so I have something to keep me awake! :-P

Can anyone help me understand yarnovers? Or maybe a website that explains them well? I'm having a heck of a time with them.

I picked up the Readers Digest Knit and Crotchet Stitch Library and they have some really neat lace stitches, but the yarnovers throw me. My stitches come out all mangled looking.

When I get to the row below the yarnover do I knit/purl it just like it were a regular stitch? I think that is where I am getting confused.

Thanks!
