Red Sox deal Renteria to Braves for Marte ESPN.com news services
DALLAS -- The Boston Red Sox gave up on Edgar Renteria just one year after lavishing a four-year, $40 million contract on him, trading the shortstop to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday for third base prospect Andy Marte.
The move left Boston without a shortstop amid speculation that it will trade Marte to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for Julio Lugo. The Braves needed a shortstop after Rafael Furcal signed a three-year, $39 million free agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Renteria made the last out for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2004 World Series, when Boston won it all for the first time since 1918. Then, the Red Sox made him the centerpiece of their effort to repeat.
But he led the majors with 30 errors in '05, struggling at the plate in April and finishing with a .276 average, eight homers and 70 RBI. The Red Sox had been hoping for something more like the .330 average, 13 homers and 100 RBI he had when he won his second consecutive Gold Glove in 2003.
Marte, 22, batted .275 with 20 homers and 74 RBI in 109 games in Triple-A last season, and .140 with no homers and four RBI in 24 games with the Braves.
He is rated as the top prospect in the Braves organization by Baseball America.
NOMAH!!!
Somehow I don't think we'll be offering him four years for $60 million.
I heard that Nomar has signed with Baltimore.
Not sure if that is just a rumor.
Wherever he ends up he'll be one of the bargains of the winter, along with Jarrod Washburn, Trevor Hoffman, Frank Thomas, and maybe risky guys like Byung-Hyun Kim and Darren Dreifort.
I wonder who we'll get for backup catcher? Einar Diaz? Kelly Stinnett?
Tied with Chan Ho Park for the most-overpaid, least-results contract of all time.
I wonder what they're planning to do with Marte? Could he play 1B?
I guess he could. We have enough third basemen on the roster at this point.
They given him an offer but he hasn't accepted it yet.
He has been opening and closing his pen cap for the last 6 hours.
He better be careful. He might tear a ligament in his hand.
He might tear a thumb muscle and be on the DL for 6 weeks.
He was so damn good his first few years in Boston.
I wonder if the steroids really has caused him the injury problems that he has been having lately.
He was really incredible when he would go deep in the hole and come out firing side arm.
Now I wonder if he has the range to play SS in the majors.
I'm not sure he can even play third anymore.
He still canthrow. I am guessing that he could play centerfield or first.
Do you really think he has lost that much range that 3rd is out of his ability?
I just think he's too injury prone.
He played a part in the Red Sox historic World Series win...as a part of the opponent...
"Renteria hits a ground ball, stabbed by Foulke, throws to first...and the Boston Red Sox are World Champions! Can YOU believe it?"
I think he also ground out (as a member of the Sox) to end the
Angels' sweep of the BoSox in the ALDS.
Angels?
I'd like to see Bill Mueller accept arbitration ....
I think our pen is close to being in good shape at the moment, including both Arroyo and Papelbon since we have 7 or 8 starters. If Arroyo's traded and Pap's in the rotation we might need some more help, like getting Otsuka for Wells.
Foulke, Mota, Timlin, Papelbon, Bradford, Arroyo, DiNardo, Vermilyea
with Hansen, Delcarmen, Van Buren, Cla Meredith and lefties Jon Lester, Abe Alvarez, and Randy Beam ('04 draft) at Pawtucket.
oops, White Sox I meant! Was thinking of last year when
Angels were swept by Red Sox!
"I wonder if the steroids really caused him the injury problems that he has been having lately."
DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING!
We have a winner.
Billy Ballgame is going to play for Grady Gump in LA.
Two things I'd like to know:
is Andy Marte really an average (or worse) fielder at 3B AND also regarded as the best fielding 3rd baseman in the last four leagues he's played in, according to various reports?
Why is Eric frickin Wilbur talking doom and gloom about how our offense is going south because we traded in our whole infield? Did he not get the memo that the weakest four hitters on our team in 2005, measured by OPS, were our four infielders? And that the career average OPS for our 2006 infield (lets say Lowell, AGonzalez, Loretta, Youkilis) is .013 off from what we got in 2005?
And while I'm at it, some sportswriters apparently didn't get the memo that Andy Marte is the next Miguel Cabrera (well, maybe). Point is the guy's not just some 3B prospect Scott Cooper wannabe.
Just a little rant. I get frustrated when I have to read guys like Edes and Wilbur. Can't wait to going back to getting all my sports analysis from the Sports Guy.
