Catholic League president Bill Donohue remarked today about last nights episode of South Park (it will run again for the next three nights):
A South Park character gets a DWI and is ordered to attend AA meetings. Told about the 12-step program, he concludes that he needs a miracle to cure him. The plot then focuses on a statue of the Virgin Mary who is bleeding out her ass. The Vatican dispatches a cardinal to investigate and he is sprayed with blood when he walks behind the statue. He then declares this to be a miracle, which draws even more people. The alcoholic, now in a wheelchair, is also sprayed with blood: he then claims he is cured and jumps out of his seat.
Pope Benedict XVI goes to investigate. He, too, is sprayed with blood when he walks behind the statue. A reporter says, The pope investigated further and determined that the statue was not bleeding out its ass, but its vagina. To which the pope replies: A chick bleeding out her vagina is no miracle. Chicks bleed out their vaginas all the time.
Comedy Central is a subsidiary of MTV, which is owned by Viacom. On the board of directors of Viacom is a practicing Catholic and a distinguished public servant, Joseph A. Califano; he served under Presidents Johnson and Carter. We are writing to him today requesting that he intervene in this matter. We want a) an apology to Roman Catholics and b) a pledge that this episode be permanently retired and not be made available on DVD. In the event Viacom does not cooperate, we are asking Mr. Califano to issue his own statement of condemnation. We are asking our members to contact him as well. Remember, they chose to insult Our Blessed Mother on the eve of the Immaculate Conception, and the holy day itself.
Joseph A. Califano is chairman of the board of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. He can be reached at CASA, 633 Third Avenue, NY, NY 10017; phone, 212-841-5200; fax, 212-956-8020; email, employment@casacolumbia.org.
It's not a miracle....
Folks who watch South Park expecting to not get offended, need to get their heads checked.
You might not like Matt & Trey's comedy, but that's what it is.
(For the less nuanced, I refer to comedy in the Aristotelian sense, not the sit-com sense. cf. The Name of the Rose.)
Do they realize that South Park insults EVERY religion?
Whatever they do is fine, but for the love of Allah, don't flush the Koran down the toilet.
Love SouthPark.
The Virgin part of this episode was over the top.
I'm not Catholic, but found it unwatchable.
Good luck. Has anyone fought South Park and won? I'm surprised it took 8 years for them to start trashing the Catholic Church, they've taken on everyone else.
If people want to watch this trash, it's still a free country. At least they weren't blaspheming Mohammad.
Uh...think controversy is what they're hoping for?
I really can't picture the Pope watching this episode--presumably dubbed into German. Or Latin?
Reason #4821 I do not watch South Park.
I think they might have missed the Zoroastrians, but they still have a lot of episodes this season.
It wasn't that funny.
Lookie!
Stand in line. You'll get your apology right after the scientologists, muslims, gays, jews, diabled, elderly, asians, blacks, evangelicals, aliens, doctors, lawyers....
They will eventually go farther than this.
i have never watched this program, but something tells me they dont mock islam like they do the virgin mary. im not catholic btw. but i do find this offensive, it is crude to mock others religions. no, south park will not do this to islam, not if they want to keep their heads attached to their hollyweird bodies.
I think we should call on the great queen spider and find the answer.
Satire is one thing...this goes beyond the pale...
Southpark does rude things like this this to many good things, and many bad things, too. Been doing rude things to Jesus for years. Consider the source.
I don't watch it.
I guess you missed the season 5 episode "Red Hot Catholic Love".
"South Park" will never grace my TV, I'd rather watch TVLand instead.
That was over the top.
They'll get by as long as they don't do anything similar with the Prophet Mohammed. Then the writers and producers will be targeted for assassination like Van Gogh.
That episode is probably in the works.
Geez. What it must be like to wake up every day expecting/hoping to be offended/dissed.
"They will eventually go farther than this."
You mean jump the shark? They have been on TV for something like 10 years. They have already gone farther.
I don't watch it. First of all I think it is stupid but that's me and I am very choosey about what I watch. Also, it doesn't matter if they insult EVERY religion. Why do people have to try and insult other people's religions anyway? What the hell does that have to do with comedy anyway? Nothing. All I can say is people should be pickier about the trash they watch on TV. I respect EVERYONE's religion but then again I'm not the writers of that assinine show. It may be popular but...
I am Catholic myself, and did not see the episode, but I do have a question. Were they insulting Mary, or were they insulting the human beings that try to gain attention for themselves by claiming to see images of Mary in things like grilled cheese sandwiches?
Everyone doesn't have to find the same things funny, but everyone shouldn't get so offended by a show that fervently upholds the mantle of equal opportunity satire. Still, I'm proud that the Freepers, unlike arrogant liberals, understand that the first line of action is to change the channel. If we were all DU'ers (who hate the show because of the moonbat-idoleology-bashing), we'd be demanding that Parker and Stone be sued and the show taken off the air.
You must have missed the pedophile priest episode.
Why would any adult watch such childish filth?
True. South Park is hilarious but this is a bit much.
"Remember, they chose to insult Our Blessed Mother on the eve of the Immaculate Conception, and the holy day itself."
Satan inspired no doubt. The sad thing is for some, desecrating holy things is "funny".
None of you understand that it was a parody of the recent reports about a recent statue of the HM that was reportedly bleeding. Thats what SP does, it makes fun of daily happenings in this country.
I stopped watching South Park after the Mel Gibson episode last season.
"south park will not do this to islam, not if they want to keep their heads attached to their hollyweird bodies."
Now THAT's something I can agree with you on.
Yet that episode came out with a positive comment on Jesus. Those who trusted in Satan lost.
They make up for it with Mecha Streisand.
Either way; it's still disgusting and not funny.
We know that God is just, and He will smite these decadent infidels in this decadent culture in His own time.
Do they insult atheism, paganism, secularism, and moral relativism as well?
Heh... not really! Jesus saved Santa from Muslim terrorists and saved Christmas! :~D and that's why we think of him every year at Christmas! He's a hero

They're not making fun of Mary in this latest episode... they're making fun of people who think they're cured by anything coming out of a statue.
We get it. And it's still not funny.
