Children tell of encounters with angels

Question: “Are there really such things as guardian angels?”

Answer: Angels are talked about often in the Bible, but they most often are messengers of God and not described as guardian angels. But in Matthew 18:10, Jesus says, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.”

This Scripture seems to imply that children have personal angels, “their angels,” that sit very close to God. Is this a reference to guardian angels? I believe it is the closest we come.

In my ministry working with hurting children and teens, I often ask them if they are having spiritual exp e r i e n ce s . And I would say that more than half of them experience the presence of angels caring for them during the rough times. Many of them can describe in detail their angels, what they look like, how they are dressed, how tall they are. Some even have names.

Other children only “feel” their angel. But when they speak of angels, it is clear that they are real and helpful, and that the children look to them for help and strength.

When I worked as a chaplain in a children’s hospital, I had many experiences when children would ask, “Is it all right if I go with her — isn’t she beautiful?” minutes before they died. I watched children have conversations with angels for many days and hours before they died. Others had dreams where angels would tell them what disease they had and how long they would live.

These dreams were incredibly accurate. One of my favorite children, a 4-year-old who died of cancer, would ask every- one to leave his room so he could be alone with “her.” When we asked who “she” was, he would simply shake his head and say, “Her — I just want to be alone with her. I love her.” On the night he died, he asked everyone to leave his room again so he could be alone with “her.” He died moments later.

I am a believer in guardian angels — or at least angels that watch over and guide us — not because I have personally had much interaction with them, but because children have shared their powerful stories with me. They have shared them with such honesty and courage. I believe the children, so I believe in angels.

There certainly are angels. Whether we are each assigned one, I'm not so sure. It's nice to think we are.

If one believes the Holy Bible to be the inspired word of God then the existence of angels is a foregone conclusion.

I agree that Angels are very real. It's the personal guardian angels I'm not sure about. Though I'm inclined towards believing in the Clarences of the world taking the George Bailey's under their wings, at times. ;o)

At the link above there's a section on guardian angels. The Psalm they provide isn't, in my opinion, acknowledging that each and every human has a 'personal' angel.

Angels do take human form at times. Whether they do so to help out an individual in a crisis I can't be sure. Rememeber, we're given a free will, and there would be a very fine line between that will and it's consequences and divine intervention to prevent us from making mistakes.

This concept isn't going to go over well with the Original Sin crowd. ;)

Well God can certainly have angels appear in many forms, if He so chooses. And yes, correcting/preventing all of our mistakes is certainly not job one for them.

Correct. If that were so then this human stage in our existence wouldn't be necessary. There would be no Hitlers, no famines, no crimes, etc.
Lucifer and his auxiliary wouldn't have been permitted to exist if not for a reason.
I think of our human stage as a process of character building to prepare us for the next step.

You may be correct. But I also look at the human stage as an incredible, sacred gift. And the world we occupy as nothing short of God's fantastic handiwork.

"Somebody's Praying"
Ricky Scaggs
(Click here to play the song "Somebody's Praying")

Somebody's praying
I can feel it

Somebody's praying
for me

Might hands are guiding me
To protect me from what I can't see

Lord, I believe ~ Lord, I believe

Somebody's praying
for me

Angels are watching
I can feel it

Angels are watching
over me

Theres many miles ahead 'til I get home
'til I'm safely kept before Your throne
'cause Lord, I believe
Lord, I believe
Your angels are watching over me

Well, I've walked the barren wilderness
Where my pillow was a stone

And I've been through the darkest cavern
Where no light had never shown

Still I went on 'cause there was someone
who was down on their knees
And Lord I thank you for those people
praying all this time for me

Somebody's praying
I can feel it

Somebody's praying
for me

Might hands are guiding me
To protect me from what I can't see

Lord, I believe ~ Lord, I believe

Somebody's praying
for me

Somebody's praying
for me

I ran across a street in Germany back in 1960 and was struck unconscious after being hit by a car.

Before regaining consciousness I was instructed by a being who
said, "When you wake up tell them that your leg is broken."

As a teenager in the 1970's I was hiking with my dad and brother. We were climbing a trailess mountain in the Adirondacks in NY. We ran out of water and it was hot and very humid. We were near the peak and then the fog rolled in and we could not see more than a few feet in front of us. We had no visible landmarks so are maps were useless. After a many failed attempts backtracking we were pretty sure were were lost. After resting a few minutes we put our compasses away. All three of us just got up and just started walking down. We bushwhacked the entire way. After about 2 hours we pushed through some scrub brush and to our surprise was the tent. I would like to say it was our excellent guide skills but that wasn't the case. It could have been absolutely dumb luck or something else. From that moment on I've always wondered about guardian angels.

Guardian Angels

Guardian Angels
Memorial
October 2nd

Pietro da Cortona
The Guardian Angel, 1656
Oil on canvas, 225 x 143 cm
Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Rome

Prayer:
Angel of God, my Guardian dear,
to whom His love commits me here,
ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide, Amen.

Latin:
Angele Dei

Ángele Dei,
qui custos es mei,
me, tibi commíssum pietáte supérna,
illúmina, custódi,
rege et gubérna.
Amen.

History:
That every individual soul has a guardian angel has never been defined by the Church, and is, consequently, not an article of faith; but it is the "mind of the Church", as St. Jerome expressed it: "how great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his birth an angel commissioned to guard it."

In the Bible this doctrine is clearly discernible and its development is well marked. In Genesis 28-29, angels not only act as the executors of God's wrath against the cities of the plain, but they deliver Lot from danger; in Exodus 12-13, an angel is the appointed leader of the host of Israel, and in 32:34, God says to Moses: "my angel shall go before thee." At a much later period we have the story of Tobias, which might serve for a commentary on the words of Psalm 90:11: "For he hath given his angels charge over thee; to keep thee in all thy ways." (Cf. Psalm 33:8 and 34:5.) Lastly, in Daniel 10 angels are entrusted with the care of particular districts; one is called "prince of the kingdom of the Persians", and Michael is termed "one of the chief princes"; cf. Deuteronomy 32:8; and Ecclesiasticus 17:17.

This sums up the Old Testament doctrine on the point; it is clear that the Old Testament conceived of God's angels as His ministers who carried out his behests, and who were at times given special commissions, regarding men and mundane affairs. There is no special teaching; the doctrine is rather taken for granted than expressly laid down; cf. 2 Machabees 3:25; 10:29; 11:6; 15:23.

But in the New Testament the doctrine is stated with greater precision. Angels are everywhere the intermediaries between God and man; and Christ set a seal upon the Old Testament teaching: "See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 18:10). A twofold aspect of the doctrine is here put before us: even little children have guardian angels, and these same angels lose not the vision of God by the fact that they have a mission to fulfil on earth.

Without dwelling on the various passages in the New Testament where the doctrine of guardian angels is suggested, it may suffice to mention the angel who succoured Christ in the garden, and the angel who delivered St. Peter from prison. Hebrews 1:14 puts the doctrine in its clearest light: "Are they not all ministering spirits, sent to minister for them, who shall receive the inheritance of salvation?" This is the function of the guardian angels; they are to lead us, if we wish it, to the Kingdom of Heaven.

(Principal source - Catholic Encyclopedia - 1913 edition )

Collect:
God our Father,
in your loving providence
you send your holy angels to watch over us.
Hear our prayers,
defend us always by their protection
and let us share your life with them for ever.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Reading: Exodus 23: 20-23
"Behold, I send an angel before you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place which I have prepared. Give heed to him and hearken to his voice, do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression; for my name is in him.

"But if you hearken attentively to his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.

"When my angel goes before you, and brings you in to the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, and I blot them out.

Second Reading(places where it is a Solemnity): Revelation 12:7-12
Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they were defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world--he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Rejoice then, O heaven and you that dwell therein! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!"

Gospel Reading: Matthew 18:1-5, 10
At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

"Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me.

"See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.

I’m certainly of mind that the angels of the Lord exist. How often and why they intervene in our affairs is one of God’s mysteries.

I research guardian angels myself after a number of strange instances though my life lead me to believe I was been helped on my way.

Only in 2006 did I connect the dots, I either had an incredible amount of luck or something beyond my comprehension was whispering little tips of advice in my ear. Everything from meeting my wife by chance to surviving been hit by a car on a French freeway and countless other examples it all seemed too good to be true.

My research eventually led me to believe that guardian angels do exist, and some people do indeed have them. The theory is that these spirits are either assigned to watch over people they have wronged in their past life or spirits watch over people by choice because they continue to love them after death.

Still skeptical I attempted to communicate with my guardian angel using dowsing rods. I have had the ability to dowse since I was 15, so dowsing was nothing new to me. I made contact with a spirit called Anna who claimed to be my guardian angel. This was somewhat of a shock, as she appeared to be a complete stranger. From the information I gathered I believe she killed me when I was a newborn, then overcome by guilt killed herself. Then as her punishment she was sent to watch over me in this life. As a skeptic this was a little hard to swallow, but as I communicated more and more with her I became convinced that the story was true. My spirit understandably is still overcome with guilt despite been proud of what I have become.

One of the strangest facts in this case is that Anna, my guiding spirit was originally from a small town in Georgia. I was born in the UK but was always strangely drawn to the US and in 2000 made this great country my home. I have always felt a home in the US and believe I was drawn back here by my guiding spirit.

I’m 90% convinced that yes, their is a Guardian angel watching over me. I will never be 100% sure until I meet her myself (hopefully not for many more years!). The universe is far more complex than any of us realize, and indeed the workings of it go far beyond what any of us can understand. Many more people probably have guardian angels than they actually realize, as these angels serve a very important place in life, they guide the living using God’s wisdom. Indeed I believe they are responsible for the thing many of us call fate, and without fate mankind would be lost in a sea of chaos.

Finally, no, a Guardian angel can’t give you next weeks lotto numbers or help you become the next big billionaire. Some things in this life really are a game of chance.

Listen and maybe you’ll find your Guardian angel, tasked you guide you though the chaos of this life.
