YEAR '2012' CATCHES SUDDEN ATTENTION AS SCIENCE, PROPHECY, AND MYTHS COLLIDE (Doomsday 2012?)
Spirit Daily ^ | 12-14-05 | Michael H. Brown

In all kinds of circles, not just among mystics, is a sense of looming events and in some cases, a year is even attached.

Of course, this is always the height of the precarious. We warned before the year 2000 not to place too much importance on that specific year (we all recall Y2K). We warn again of the same thing now.

Rarely does prophecy pinpoint matters according to a human timeline, for events are conditional and God is infinite, which means He is timeless.

Moreover, there is not

2012 marks the end of time.
At least one cycle of it according to the Maya.
I carry the date around in my wallet to let me know
how much longer I have.
Be seeing you, until 2012....

Time ended for the Mayans centuries ago.

One matter of interest, perhaps, is that in the year 2012 our planet will encounter maximum "galactic gravitational forces" as the Winter Solstice falls on the same day that the ecliptic crosses the galactic equator (on December 21, 2012, at 11:11 Universal Time, if you want to be really precise).

All of my boys have 12 or 21 in their birthdays. From oldest to youngest I have 8/12, 12/8, 12/21, and 9/12. So does this mean I only have 7 more years of birthday parties?

"Sudden" attention? Sheesh, I've been reading about the 2012-Mayan-calendar-TEOTWAWKI stuff since I was a kid, at least 30 years ago.

Guess it's kind of a "slow-motion" sudden.

This article was all over the place. I think it was trying to say "the world might end sometime in the near future but it might take longer than that because there are so many forces going on that we just don't know enough about and some people say that some of those forces might be increasing (but maybe not)."

I remember in grade school they told us the Mayans disappeared because they didn't invent the hoe, and the jungle took over their cities.

A) I always thought that was a pretty weak explanation and

B) any civilization that can't clear plants off their buildings doesn't deserve to live. It's like putting a little chlorine in the gene pool.

"Time-wave zero." Yep, shroomhead Terrence McKenna first popularlized the date in his early 70s book The Invisible Landscape. Old news.

Actually, if the world's gonna end, I'd rather have the Democrats in charge when it does. That way, they can get blamed for it.

George Noory has said on numerous occasions he will retire in 2012.

The next critical date after that is the UNIX rollover date: January 19, 2038? Anyway, 2^31 - 1 seconds after January 1, 1970.

Which brings me to one of my hobby horses:

We already agree that our calendar is wrong, off by anywhere from 2 to 16 years, depending on who's doing the reckoning, and further in error because of the absence of a year zero.

The more fundamental point is that God did not intend us to mark His years by the birth of Jesus.

If He had intended this we would have a Biblical fixing of the date.

Further, the day of Jesus' birth is unremarkable as all men are born.

However, very few return from the dead, that event is remarkable, and it is the defining moment of Christianity, the very moment of proof that his sacrifice was not in vain. And the Bible gives a precise reference for when this happened!

Clearly this was the date the calender was supposed to start!

For extra points, this makes our calender off by anywhere from 17 to 30 years. That makes this something like Holy Year 1988 to Holy Year 1975, giving us anywhere from 12 to 25 years to get our affairs in order before the real end of the millennium...

I'll take 1988 for 24 :)

If it's 1975 I'm 11 and have to go home to Mommy and go back to 6th grade, and I'd rather fork my eyes out.

Just kiddin'...

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
