Glass shape 'affects drink size' (News that can used)

People are more likely to pour extra alcohol into short, wide glasses than tall, narrow glasses, a study says.

The US researchers from Cornell University asked 198 students and 86 bartenders to pour a shot of alcohol.

They found students poured 30% more into the short glasses, while bar workers faired only slightly better at 20%, the British Medical Journal said.

The groups poured more than a standard shot measure into both types of glasses.

Students also said they thought the tall glasses held more, suggesting they were trying to compensate for size when pouring into the short, wide glasses.

The people participating in the study were asked to pour four different types of drinks - vodka tonic, rum and cola, whisky and gin and tonic.

Practise led students to pour less into tall glasses, but did not affect the amount put in the short ones, while bar staff poured less in each.

Lead researcher Brian Wansink said the findings suggested people should think more carefully about the measures they pour and it might be useful to mark on glasses to signify what equates to a shot.

And he added: "If short tumblers lead even bartenders to pour more alcohol than tall highball glasses the way to better control alcohol consumption is to use tall glasses or to use glasses with the alcohol level marked on them - and to realise that, when alcoholic drinks are served in a short wide glass, two drinks are actually equal to two and a half."

Moira Plant, professor of alcohol studies at the University of the West of England, said: "The real problem is that people just do not known what constitutes a unit of alcohol.

"Evidence suggests that at home, people will pour themselves larger measures than those served at pubs.

"Meanwhile, pubs have started serving drinks in larger glasses and offering cheap promotions to encourage people to drink more.

"People need to become more aware."

One wonders which glasses were closer to hand.

Me, I pour into whatever's clean!

(And if nothing meets that criterion, people call me a slattern and drink from the bottle.)

Indeed. I will scout my local bars to find the shortest, widest glasses.

This theory needs a lot of testing and validation. I am going to start with this one here:

My gage ... how much is missing out of the bottle at the end of the evening works for me. The size or shape of the glass is of no consequence ... my motto ... a bottle a day (of wine) keeps the doctor at bay.

No one on FR has ever quoted Russian literature to me.

Marry me. Damn Xena's Guy. Damn the law.

(The real question is what the third drink does.)

If you pour into the right glass, a bottle of wine only yields three glasses. Nothing wrong with that!

"This theory needs a lot of testing and validation."

I see a federally-funded study in Congress's future. With Ted Kennedy doing most of the "research."

"The real question is what the third drink does."
OK, another piece from the same book addresses your question in great detail:

"... For example, by the age of eighteen I have noticed that from the first dose to the fifth I was maturing, i.e. maturing irresistibly, but starting from the sixth and up to and including the ninth - I softened. Softened so much that from the tenth dose I fell asleep, equally irresistibly. And what did I think in my naiveté? I thought: it's necessary to overcome sleepiness by willpower and to drink the eleventh dose - then, maybe, maturing will resume.
No. No resumptions, I have tried.
I worked on this problem for three years, every day I tried, and every day I fell asleep after the tenth dose.
And everything was so simple: it turned out that if you've already drunk the fifth, you should drink the sixth, the seventh, the eighth and the ninth - all at once, but to drink ideally, i.e. to drink only in imagination. In other words, you should, by one stride of will - not drink either the sixth or the seventh or the eighth or the ninth.
And, after the pause, you should drink the tenth dose, and, just as the Ninth symphony of Antonin Dvorzhak is conventionally called the Fifth, so you conditionally call your sixth dose the tenth and then you can be sure: now you'll mature without interruption from the sixth (tenth) to the very twenty eighth (thirty-second) dose, i.e. to the limit after which insanity and swinery follow...."

This is why they developed the 45cc shot glass. Same dose every time.

Why don't bartenders keep bar with a beaker?
