This is going to be less than pretty, but someone had to do it.
Yesterday's Steeler/Indy game was .............. well, you fill that in.
I'm a Steeler fan of 55 years or so, and the game yesterday was, to say the least, quite bizarre --- as the concept of "a football move" brought back visions of Elroy 'Crazy Legs' Hirsh. The LIVE THREAD yesterday including this incredible game was as lively as the game itself. This morning I gathered some of your comments on the Troy Polamalu interception.
Let's be honest............. he caught the damn ball and the refs blew the call. But FReepers' humor and insights were pretty darn funny as all this was happening. I'm a crappy typist, so this may be a quite ugly presentation. I am just going to present some of the posts from all of you who were transfixed by yesterday's game and the bizarre officiating. It all was unreal, and your comments were fabulous.

I'm a Colts fan, and that INT call was horrible. Seemed like TV wanted an interesting finish.

2 or 3 times during each playoff year I see something that makes me think the whole thing is fixed. That overturned call was one of them.
I hate the Steelers.

although, you better hope that they change up the ref teams form the Denver-Pats game...talk about having their heads up their a$$es....absolutely pathetic weekend for the zebras in ALL games. Instant Replay is a waste if you cannot correct what happened on the field.

I'm a Colts fan and thought this might be our "tuck rule" moment.It was pure BS.But, ultimately we didn't take full advantage of it.What I have noticed in these playoffs is referees and crews that I wouldn't necessarily rate in the top 5 or so getting these games.Why?
I am under the impression that she may have been somewhat right. At least it sometimes seems well "arranged".

The officiating in all of these games has been putrid. New England got ripped off on that interference call in the endzone, as an example.
My husband and I were going nuts! If Troy had just stayed down after his roll, it would have been an int. Plain and simple. How it could be ruled incomplete after he caught it, had possession and started to move is still puzzling.
Of course, after Peyton was sacked and we were trying to punch it in, I was saying to my hubby how I felt bad for Coach Dungee. Then the Bus fumbled and my hubby blamed it on me for feeling bad for them (mimicking me in a girly voice). LOL!! I recanted my feeling bad for them and after they missed the FG and we won (the game safely over), I stated that I could once again feel bad for Dungee.
Explain it yourself then!

Many people hate the Steelers because they are so damn good . They probably have the biggest following in the USA. Every stadium you go to has mucho Steelers fans whether or not they have recently won a super bowl, and now they are trying influence home teams to not sell tickets to Steeler fans so the towels won't be seen on TV .
I saw that on the news with the interviews of the ticket sellers being instructed to not sell to 'Burgh fans. I think I saw an interview with the owner admitting it also!! At least the ticket people have the sense to say screw you, whoever has the money goes to the game!!
Even Browns fans like me thought the Steelers were screwed. That was a brutal reversal.
I hate the Steelers, but they kicked the crap out of the Colts.
Yes. As I saw it ........... Troy caught the ball cleanly ........rolled over........ then, when getting up to do his thing (a certain FOOTBALL MOVE ---BARF), he kneed the ball out of "his own possession".......... the ball squrited onto the ground.........where he recovered his own fumble.

Is there some obsucre rule that says after the defender makes the reception (from what I saw it was a clear reception, he did not trap the ball on the ground)rolls on the ground, gets up and one of his legs kicks the ball loose, it's incomplete. Let's face it, if this had been the offensive receiver that did this, of course it would have been a reception, no questions asked.

There was a pretty bad no-call in the Bears game as well. The Bears were driving with about 4 minutes to go, down by 8. The play-clock went to zero a good second or second-and-a-half before the ball was snapped. Grossman threw an interception. However, the play never should have happened, as a delay of game is an automatic call - the other team cannot decline the penalty. The Bears should have retained possession of the ball and the outcome of the game could have been quite different. Very bad no-call.
The NFL has messed with the catch/non-catch rules to the point that it is senseless.
I saw a Washington game maybe last year or the year before where a Washington player caught a ball, ran several steps, that is several steps in bounds, went out of bounds, slipped down and gave up the ball. He was after all out of bounds so their was no reason to hang on to the ball rather than brace himself. They called it a noncatch.
Then so far these playoffs, the Tampa tying TD catch v. Washington and this pick have been overruled for no reason. With the Tampa play, they guy caught the ball. He was in the endzone. That makes it a TD and the play is over. Nothing that happens later can change that. On the pick, it was a catch and then a drop. Someone can write a rule that says anything, but it was a catch.

I was rooting for the Steelers because Mannings playoff futility stimulates my Schadenfreude gland. HOWEVER, when Bettis lost that ball on the 1-inch line, I suddenly started rooting for the Colts: the thought of Bettis ending his career with that play was just too delicious. A Schadenfreude feast! Oh, well.

OK now I'm going to defend not taking the knee. Yeah sure given the fumble it looks like going for it was the wrong call, but when you look at the math it was the right call. There was 1:20 left in the game and Indy had all their time outs. If the Steelers take 3 knees the Colts call 3 time outs, so then we're at 4th and goal with about 1:14 or so left on the clock (knees and instant time outs don't take much clock), so then we kick the FG and are up by 6 but the Colts will get the ball back around their 20 with 1:00 on the clock. And then you have to ask yourself if the Colts can get a TD in 1 minute from 80 yards away, then think of the Colts first play in their regular season matchup and the answer is a big YES. So the right answer is to say "the Bus hasn't fumbled and lost the ball for two years" and go for the two score lead. You gotta figure the worst case scenario is the Bus gets stuffed 3 times and you still kick the FG but at least stuffing the Bus 3 times will use more clock than taking 3 knees. IMHO the "perfect" call would have been a fake knee QB sneek, catch the Colts hanging out by the umpire getting ready to call a timeout and maybe get the TD then (if not run the Bus on 2nd down, the fake only works on 1st down).
And the really good news for Steeler fans: Bill "coach like it's a regular season game" Cowher actually went for the throat and coached like it was a playoff game on multiple occassions during that game. Let's hope he keeps it up next week.

You make it very clear by asking the question about an offensive receiver.
NFL refereeing has to become a full-time job. This called-back interception and the bogus interference call against Assante Samuel in the Pats/Broncos game were awful calls.

There was legal incidental contact by both players for about ten yards, with both players going for the ball. But at the end, the Patriots' player pushed off and shoved Lele down and out of bounds. That was the interference. And he was slowing up and impeding Lele's progress to the ball all the way.
At any rate, they probably would have scored on the inept Pats anyway, and the game was decided by more than the disputed points.

(I do agree the Polamalu ruling was terrible...that was about as exciting a game as I have ever seen...should be a good one next week.)
Dick Labeau came up with a disguised non blitz to help the coverage. It was a masterful plan and the reason the Steelers won.
The term "a football move" was purposefully intended to be vague so the referees could keep the games close, TV viewers would keep watching, and the league could charge more for TV advertising.

The referees did everything in their power to hand the game to Manning.
The interception, the offsides and the pass interference all were blown calls that went to the Colts.
All three were so obvious that it is an insult to say otherwise.
I'm a big fan of the DGFL, the Delayed Gratification Football League. I'm so excited when my team has a great play, but I am even happier because I usually have to wait an extra 5 minutes to see if my cheering is justified. That just makes my elation even more elatier. Of course, sometimes the call doesn't go my way because of the sudden influx of "football moves", but that just gins me up for the NEXT big play where I can sit on pins and needles to see if it really happened or if the opposing team is going to file an injunction against it. Maybe it ought to be called the ACLUFL.....

When did I say it was on purpose? It wasnt a clean hit but it wasnt an intention-to-hurt hit.
Im saddened that the Bengals never got the oppurtunity to give it their best shot with the talent that got them there. To me, Pitts win over them isnt as impressive unless Carson plays.
And i dont blame teams not selling to Pitt fans. There is a reason they call it home field advantage.

God, it would have been nice if THE BUS had just rumbled that ball into the endzone. That fumble was a severe bummer.......... but, thank God for Ben's tackle!
