Brokeback Mountain Claims Big Four At The Golden Globes

Critically-acclaimed western Brokeback Mountain cleaned up at the Golden Globe Awards last night by claiming four top honors.

The controversial film, which has been banned from some cinemas for its gay themes, took home Best Movie (Drama), Best Screenplay and Best Song prizes at the 63rd annual Golden Globe Awards, while Ang Lee picked up the night's Best Director honor from his hero Clint Eastwood.

And there were triple celebrations for Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line when Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix claimed the acting honors in the Comedy/Musical movie category and the film picked up the Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) prize.

The win cost Phoenix dear, however - he bet Witherspoon's husband Ryan Phillippe he wouldn't win a Golden Globe. The Crash star demanded payment as his pal took to the stage at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Meanwhile, there was a big upset for the stars of Desperate Housewives during the night's TV awards - all four Best Actress nominees from the show lost out to Mary Louise Parker, who plays a marijuana-selling desperate housewife on cable show Weeds.

But the stars of the hit show didn't miss out on a Best TV Show award - they scooped the coveted prize from Weeds, Curb Your Enthusiasm, My Name is Earl, Entourage and Everybody Hates Chris - and the show's Felicity Huffman claimed the night's Best Actress (Drama) movie award for her role as a transgender man in Transamerica.

The big TV winner was acclaimed mini-series Empire Falls, which claimed two honors - Best Actor (Paul Neuman) and Best Miniseries/TV Movie.

The full list of awards is:

Movie Awards Best Score: John Williams MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA

Best Original Song: A Love that Will Never Grow Old by Emmylou Harris, Bernie Taupin and Gustavo Santaolalla -Brokeback Mountain

Best Movie (Comedy/Musical): Walk the Line

Best Movie (Drama):

TV Awards

Best Mini-series or TV Movie: Empire Falls

Best TV Series (Movie/Comedy): Desperate Housewives

Best TV Series (Drama): Lost

Cecil B Demille Award for Lifetime Achievement: Sir Anthony Hopkins

It's very unfortunate. There are some great films and TV shows out there, but they won't win awards I guess.

You're correct, in fact, good tv shows like Seventh Heaven, Touched by an Angel, Joan of Arcadia, etc. all cancelled, yet crap like Book of Daniel, Will and Grace, etc. etc. still get big ratings, (I did hear this is the last year for W&G though).

I can't wait to see the ratings for this waste of air time. I'm sure 24 plummeted them and even during their last hour they were up against The Bachelor.

And FR will have about two dozen threads going to add to the hype of "disgusting behavior". Why not just ignore something you don't like instead? :)

Boring and predictable.

What daytime talkshow wins each year?

Ellen, of course.

The most unwatchable show on TV, but she's a lez so give her the phallic statue to take home.

Okay. Your feelings about a *movie* have been recorded for posterity. America is safe again. :)

I don't know who won daytime TV, because I'm not home during the day, and I don't care what happens on award shows. I'm frankly surprised to see how much people here DO care.

"..gypsum weed.."

That's Jimson weed, son.

Gypsum is calcium carbonate, and nothing grows in it. Not even Jimson weed.

To me, the perfect example of Hollywood getting swept up in itself is much further down in the article. "Paul Newman -- Best Actor -- Empire Falls"?

I saw Empire Falls, absolutely loved it, but Paul Newman was on screen for maybe 15 minutes of a 4-5 hour, 2 part film. Best SUPPORTING Actor, maybe--it was a great role that Newman played up, having the time of his life. But the best ACTOR in the film was (politics aside) Ed Harris, who embodied the quiet reserved man, who finally had enough and snaps. All of his understated emotions were written on his face, and he did a great job in the role.

To me, this just says everybody wanted to rush to give Newman one of those "Lifetime Achievement"-type make-up awards, so they can tell their grandchildren about how they voted for him. His performance was not the best lead role, because it wasn't a lead role.

Big year for the leftists. Up for for "Best Picture" Oscars are an anti-American film (Syriana), an anti-Israel film (Munich), and a pro-homo film (BM).

Actually, I regard not responding as "silent approval". That's all these threads are. Public comments and responses to articles ALREADY published by the MSM. Curling up into the fetal position and hoping everything will turn out OK is not my way, nor do I believe it is the American way.

And NARNIA, which is the top-grossing film in the US, wasn;t even nominated in a major
category....duplicating the snub for PASSION OF THE CHRIST.

I saw that Geena Davis won for best TV Actress in Commander-in-Chief.

I watch the show to see how many things they get wrong which is a lot. That being said her acting is the weakest part of the show. Her Republican foil, Donald Sutherland, runs rings around her for his portrayal of a reptile.

My apologies for my rant.

Checking the list, I see that Paul Newman won for Best Supporting Actor for Empire Falls. The "journalist" got it wrong. Imagine that.

Well, I'm not going to see the film, and so far that's all others have said they are doing as well. They're not advocating shutting down theatres by force, or anything like that. We all have the right to NOT go to a movie.

I haven't seen any of these movies or any of these TV programs. I didn't watch this award show, and I don't plan to watch the Academy Awards broadcast either, not from disapproval but from boredom.

My life and my days are filled with fascinating things. I'm never able to do all the wonderful things that I intend to do every day. That's real happiness. My life is wonderful.

I don't even know who most of these people are. I like Mary Louise Parker and Reese Witherspoon, but when a peabrain like George Clooney start receiving adulations it's time to look around for more substantial interest.
