South Bend, IN - A South Bend police officer, found guilty for drunk driving, learned Wednesday that he's being demoted. Sergeant Ronald Nowicki will be demoted to a corporal.

The South Bend Board of Public Safety went above and beyond the police chief's recommendation of a 21-day suspension.

Nowicki will also face that 21 day suspension without pay beginning Thursday.

In late December, Nowicki pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated.

Nowicki did not attend Wednesday's hearing, but NewsCenter 16 did speak with him about the decision.

He says he does plan to appeal the decision.

Wait.
He was a sergeant and he got caught drunk driving?
What do they think he's gonna act like when he's a corporal?

He says he does plan to appeal the decision.

Of course because his retirement pay just dropped half a grand a month. If he was an honest cop he would stfu and take his lumps

Two sets of rules.

The story doesn't mention how he'll be able to do his job with his driver's license suspended for 90 days to a year, what having him operate a city police cruiser will do to the city insurance-wise, or how many cruisers they'll have to outfit with one of those infernal ignition interlock devices, or how he'll be able to talk on the radio, run radar, hog the left lane and play solitaire on the onboard computer while blowing his conveyance down the road.

If it were up to me, I'd fire him. I have always believed in zero-tolerance policy for L.E.O.'s.

This is the 1st of 2 "officers" in South Bend to get nailed for drunk driving in the past 2 months. The other "officer" is/was the head of detectives. (also African-American) can't wait to see if there is a double standard. (there usually is in South Bend).
