Whats the best AK-47

Posted on 01/30/2006 2:33:25 PM PST by Jimma

I am going to purchase an AK-47. I was wondering who makes the best one? I am also curious as to what to look for as far as wear and tear.

Agreed...the Chinese made AK's are pretty bad. Romania and Ukrainian made ones are good. There's also a variant made here in the US, which is pretty good.

If you can get an old East German AK, go for it. The East Germans increased the part tolerances.

For you people in Reo-Linda; it works better.

From what I understand, they are easy as crap to make. Afghan peasants hammer them out of sheet metal.

Iunderstand the Czechs made a pretty good version, as far as it went, but it depends on what you want it for.

If you are feeling really down and blue now that Alito got confirmed, I suggest you not post your questions on one of the biggest bulletin boards in the world.

The gun shop displays and sells them openly. They are the chinese made ones so they aren't worth the price. But, it does make a nice pop versus the AR-15.

Just from personal experience, I would save up another $400 or so and get an AR-15. Check out Rock River Arms, or Bushmaster, there are many builders, and the quality is well worth the price. AK's aren't bad for a $3-500 gun, and for $200 you can get a milled receiver (don't get a stamped receiver) SKS, but if you can save up about 900 you can get a quality firearm. My 2 cents.

Get a surplus Yugo SKS if you want a cheap, reliable rifle taht;s legal to own.

They're damn scary accurate out of the box usually.
They are cheap and legal even in Los Angeles, Ca. I got all mine for less that $65.00 with a C&R shipped to my house.

You can make is look "scary" with aftermarket plastic if you must. The only down side is a fixed 10 rnd mag and stripper clips and you can upgrade to a removeable mag...but why bother?

If you're series about this, go get yourself and your wife a couple of M1 carbines. The real ones, not the fakes. If you're not series, I don't have an answer for you.

really add $600 to the money you'll waste on this trash and buy a Rock River M4 Tactical Elite...you'll really have something worth keeping.

"I have also heard the Romanian rifles are shoddy. "

I have a hi-cap Romanian WASR-10 which is as accurate as any other ak type, very sturdy, fun to shoot, and doesn't need much cleaning so long as you dont use corrosive ammo.

"get an AR-15."

What do you think makes the AR better than the AK?

The Yugoslavian AK is by far the best. It has a groove in the safety that functions as a hold-back for the bolt. No other AK has that feature. The receiver is thicker and more rugged that the usual AK, half again as thick. The finish is better. The wood is teak. They are also the most expensive of the AK's.
