Will you help me with Mozilla Firefox, please? [Vanity]

Posted on 02/03/2006 10:09:58 PM PST by righttackle44

I have seen discussions of folks who know about Mozilla Firefox, and I hope some of you will help me, keeping in mind that I am not very well versed in computer related matters, but my son is. But he is stumped, as well.

I use Mozilla Firefox as my search engine. I have the moderate SafeSearch feature on.

There are a number of web pages that it pulls up, but when I click the item on the search page, everything that I have pulled up on the internet disappears. Nothing else. Any Word or Excel documents or anything else remains okay.

For example, I try to pull up the Rip Off Report. Firefox pull up the item on the page, but when I click on the website, the internet items just disappear. As a result, there are a number of websites I can't use.

Will you please give me some advice? I don't know enough about settings or other features to know what to do.

Thank you. Freepers are the best.

Just in the last week, Firefox came out with a new version 1.5.0.1 of their browser, which fixes some bug and incompatibilities. If this is your lucky day, perhaps they fixed whatever bugs you are seeing.

What version of Firefox are you using? To find out:

  1. See along the top where it says
    File Edit View Go Bookmarks Tools Help
  2. Click on [ Help ]
  3. Click on [ About Mozilla Firefox ]
  4. Look for the word "version" in the little window that pops up.
  5. What number is after it? Likely it is either 1.0 or 1.5 something.
If it is something less than 1.5.0.1, then consider upgrading at http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ .

I'm not sure whether these will be the definitive cures for your problem, but:

You may want to take a look at Fasterfox, rather than recommend Firetune.

Just looked at the source code. There is no sniffer unless it is being accessed by a remote script.

This script may be the problem although I'm week on Javascript

function validateSearch(theForm){
if(theForm.q5.value.length < 3){
alert("you must enter a valid search!");
theForm.q5.focus();
return false;
}
return true;
}

The script tells you that your keyword must be greater than three letters. I don't think thats the problem.

The focus parameter has been known to be very buggy depending on the browser.

After teaching me how to script in layers using the Span ID tag, my Iranian Javascript instructor told me to forget about layers.

It incourages you to build slow loading pages that only a small number of computers can see.

The rule for websites, still is KISS.

Thank you. I'll pass this on to my

I guess I do not know what righttackle44 is asking.

Is it about the "Tool Bar"?

I have my "Tool Bar" set-up different than the original downloaded "Tool Bar".

I have 20 Folders in [across] my "Tool Bar". Each of these Folders makes a drop-down appear when Clicked, with more Folders. Then in each of these Folders, I have bookmarks galore.

Comments, questions...

I have been using Firefox since I dumped AOL a little while ago.

I set Yahoo as the home page and downloaded the Google toolbar.
It works fine for me.

I would rather use Opera but on my crap dial up,it has problems with images,losing them if I scroll down a page and having to start over when I scroll back.

May have to switch browers entirely.

Do some testing first. For example, does the same behavior present itself when using Internet Explorer?
Also...is this recent behavior? If so, and you are using WinXP...do a System Restore to a date before this behavior presented itself.
Lastly, do a FULL spyware/adware/malware and virus scan. Use the best software you can find...like AdAware or Microsoft's Anti-Virus (formerly Giant) and AVG Free Anti-Virus. You may have a nasty wee beastie lurking about or a bad BHO (Browser Helper Object) that got downloaded and installed without your knowledge. Your son should know about these.

Why? What the differences?

Fasterfox is an extension, is more recent, and is more easily configurable.

Looks like he's not going to respond to you.

I went to that very link. I see they're wanting you to install the Java plug in. I'm running Winduhs ME, and the Java plugin that'll work in Firefox will absolutely crash my machine, and if you uninstall it, it'll break the Java that came with Windows.

If I have to have Java, such as for NOAA radar sites, I'll use IE.

"Is this the site you want?"

I was using it as an example of
one of the sites that my computer
won't hold since I've switched
to Mozilla.

Thanks. BTW, it is a pretty
good site.

Make sure you shut off your system restore before you run your virus/ad scans, than turn it back on. If you don't - your just loading buggie boos back in.

I don't know if you got your answer but I think maybe you have a default setting goofing you up.

I use Firefox and just entered "Rip Off Report" into the Google search box in the upper right hand corner and had no problem either in opening a new Google Window or then opening the Rip Off Report Web page from the link.

Try this:

  1. Tools
  2. Options
  3. Content
    • Load Images Box - Check
    • Enable Java Box - Check
    • Enable Java script Box - Check
That might do the trick
