A BURGER AND THOU, White Castle Lovers Enjoy Valentine's Day by the Sackful
Star Ledger ^ | 02.15.06 | PETER GENOVESE

"When I had my wisdom teeth pulled out," family friend Joseph Pignatore was saying, "my brother-in-law said, 'We should take a ride to White Castle.' I basically gummed the burger while soda was dribbling down my mouth."

Yesterday, Pignatore, all teeth in place, could enjoy his sack of Slyders in peace at the White Castle on Stelton Road in South Plainfield. The Hillsborough resident, along with his wife, Joanne, and son, Matthew, were among thousands of people nationwide who enjoyed Valentine's Day, White Castle style.

Participating White Castles, including six of the 24 in New Jersey, invited couples to a candlelit dinner of Slyders, Chicken Rings, Fish Nibblers or whatever else on the regular menu their fast-food- loving hearts desired. You could even order the Sweetheart Special -- 10 Slyders, two orders of fries and two drinks.

"Make Your Valentine's Day Steamy!" was White Castle's pitch.

"I figured this was the most romantic place to take my girlfriend," said Joseph Geiger of Stewartsville, splitting 10 Slyders with Paloma Kelly of Butler. "Instead of a big expensive dinner, I'm treating her to a couple steamed burgers."

Love was in the air, and grease was the word. At the South Plainfield White Castle, there was not a Slyder novice in the bunch.

"I grew up with White Castle," Geiger said. "I came here when I was a student at Rutgers. It was the only place open at 4 a.m. You'd get a sack of 10, go back to your room." Carl Minue of the Iselin section of Woodbridge is not normally allowed by his wife to frequent fast-food places, but she relaxed the restriction for one night. "We've had many arguments over health issues," Joanne Minue confided. "I really love him and I would really hate to see him go." Which

Krystals is the closest thing to White Castle in Dallas. Close...but not quite the same thing.

When I was a kid in North Georgia, there was a chain called "Krystal" (yes, with a K).

They had hamburgers for 5 cents. Small, just a patty on a dinner-roll, but I could eat a dozen.

What about Whataburger? I thought that was a joke until I had to go to Louisiana. I wonder if Whataburger is the model for Burgerwold on Beavis and Butthead.

I like White Castle too, but even I'm not cheap enough to make it a Valentine date (and I'm pretty cheap).

I craved White Castles when I lived in Texas. Now that I'm back in Michigan surrounded by WC's, I only go once a month or so, and even then I prefer the cheese sticks and clam strips.

Now I miss Whataburgers.

"Krystals is the closest thing to White Castle in Dallas."

We just had one open in San Antonio - took The Wife (who grew up in White Castle Country [Detroit]) there on Val's Day.

Mustard on the Krystals (slyder equivalents) is a nice touch.

DH was recently in the Twin Cities, helping his brother move into a new home. He brought back a case of those things, and after ingesting a few, then waking up in the middle of the night DYING of thirst, I remembered what evil, salty gut-bombs they are, LOL!

I do not understand it, myself. *Scratches Head*

Maybe I'm spoiled? I grew up in Milwaukee, so I'm a "George Webb" Girl.

Either way, my tasebuds have been ruined, LOL!

I have an old college roommate that probably took advantage of that deal. This guy lived on White Castle, as did we all. But, because of his size (6'5" and 240 lbs) his alimentary tract was, shall I say, accelerated. This boy could "process" 20 White Castles in a short 4 hour period. Oh yes, he could eat 20 in a setting. His usual number was 21, I asked him once, why an odd number like 21, his reply: "20 isn't enough and 22 would be too many". I stopped questioning after that. You have to admire a man that knows, exactly, his limits.

After Larry's White Castle adventures in nutrition the dorm room would become a gas chamber, with me in it. The whole dorm would have the aroma of a New York sewer. And the sounds....tubas and trombones is all I could think of. The little gut busters effect me the same way but I was a bit more genteel than my buddy Larry. I, at least, went to the bathroom to play the White Castle melody, and lit a cigarette.

I forgot to mention the large quantities of cheap beer that Larry consumed with the WC buffet. Fuel to the fire, as it were.

One last story about the White Castle. The one nearest the Medical School campus in Indianapolis always had the obligatory panhandler around it. He had the cardboard sign and all. One night we stopped there to get some slyders and I took pity on the old fellow. I asked him if I he wanted me to buy him a sack full. He replied, "could ya just give me 5 bucks, those things give me the sh!ts". I gave him the 5 with tears of laughter in my eyes.

How many stories has White Castle generated over the decades?
