The future of do-it-yourself video hardware in the Microsoft Vista generation is in question, as issues have surfaced surrounding two key portions of the high-definition video space.
How consumers will have to deal with HDCP, a content protection scheme, and CableCards, a means of transmitting video information into the home, have come to the fore.

Theyare most definitely not DOA. Media Center PC's will be exceedingly expensive for the first year though. Sony sells the only HDCP compliant media center pc right now. Sonystyle.com
What the pc enthuasists should be pissed off about is how the current top of the line Nvidia and ATI cards are not HDCP compliant even though many have been advertised as HDCP ready.

I suspect that what ATI and NVIDIA have done with 'HDCP Ready' is made the boards with a slot to put the crypto-chip in. It will probably work, if you can find someone who will sell you the chip for a reasonable price. Still, it's very misleading advertising.

I hate buying commercial computers. I've always built my own. Even Dell, as good as they are, is never going to stack up to a machine I build myself. This whole situation is starting to register pretty high on my Sucks-Meter.

Have they offered any public explanations/definitions?

Best of wishes with that. I'd have gone with Mac a long time ago if it weren't for the fact that I can't get all the software I want to use for it.
