The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

There are two habits that drive me insane. One is pulling back when standing tied, the other is refusing to load.

Maybe she was trying to threaten the horse, "see that dead animal trailer over there? If you don't load in this trailer, yer gonna be loadin' in that one!"

Tuffy, hey I'm glad he's doing better:)

I'm back from my ride. Mack isn't home but will be shortly so I've left him saddled and I'll get some pictures of me riding, but I also took some trail pictures.

Macks home, BBL

Looks like a nice cool drink for Harley! I'll look forward to the other pics. I need some trail riding myself! I'm gonna try to go one day this wkend. There's about a 40% chance of rain tomorrow so it'll probably be Sunday.

I am just north of Dallas. I can find it, but it is expensive. All the decent coastal is gone. My feed store has been bringing in prairie hay and timothy from Colorado. I pay 7.95 for the prairie hay and 8.75 for the timothy. They are heavy bales. I am fortunate to be able to afford the prices but many around here cannot.

Many owners who have horses in a herd situation feed round bales. They are going for 75-100 right now. Normally, they are 25-30. My daughter bought enough to get her through the winter at 45 last fall or she would be having problems affording her herd of 8 (2 foals).

I was able to get some coastal that was at least a year old and yellow at Wells Bros. but normally I don't buy there and didn't go back for anymore. Due to the drought, we didn't get 2nd or 3rd cuttings last year.

I was going to ride this afternoon but I am not too disappointed because it is raining!

Glad to hear a positive report, Tuffy! I have been thinking of you guys all day.

BTW, if you feel like it, I am having a clinic at Legacy on March 4-5. I am bringing in my mentor for a classical dressage clinic and will be riding Henkell. Come on over and audit if you want to. You will learn really great stuff just by watching and listening to him. He trained for 7 years at a place called Neindorff in Germany which teaches the same stuff as the Spanish Riding School, and he trains regularly now with a former chief rider from the Spanish Riding School. He really knows his stuff, and has lots of goodies that are not written down in books anywhere but are passed on as oral tradition.

Ok, Here's a few more trail pictures. This is the creek bed.

Here is another picture of the creek at a different place.

I thought it would be interesting for you all to see a summer and winter picture of the same spot. The hill that Blake is riding down is the same hill your looking at in the winter pictures.

Terrific pics! I do like the comparison to summer and winter! and funny about your effects you couldn't undo, it's a nice picture :~D

How's he doing? You feel like he's moving sound now and could you tell what the status of saddle fit was after this ride?

I've been having my own drama over in the HH over my old Tom cat (here)

I didn't really ride hard enough or long enough to get him sweating enough to see if he has dry spots. He felt fine, and he had no soreness when we got back, but he didn't have soreness after short rides in the English either.

I only loped in the arena and only for a few pictures. The vet said till his feet are grown out, I need to just walk.

EEEWWWWWWWWW, I just made it over to the HH and looked at the pictures of your cat. He did look odd. I'm glad it's passed whatever it was. Maybe he just got some thing in his nose, a whiff of something that made him loopy for awhile. Glue or something:)

Thanks... I don't know what to think of that episode. It stressed me out. If he's sniffin' loopy glue I wish he'd share ;~D

It's not that hard to find here in central Texas, it's just a little more expensive since there has not been alot of rain to grow a decent crop for the last cut of 2005. We lease our land for the specific purpose of growing coastal hay and managed to only get two round bales an acre for two cuttings last year. The third season was tilled under and not worth cutting. This man could have bought something for his horses had he really wanted to.

Tuffy, I'm really sorry to hear about Tuffy, praying he'll be okay.

Becky, Harley looks great, the land looks awful - sure hope you get some rain.

Hair, If my inside cats go outside, sometimes they come in all puffed up, wilder than a march hare. Think they just are imagining themselves a few million years back in evolution, pretending to be sabertooth tigers. Hopefully, that's all that was wrong.

No baby yet, I spent most of the night last night watching because she's so uncomfortable but I have to work tomorrow so Bob will have to do the watching tonight, I'm out of gas.

We found homes for the two old geldings. A friend and her boyfriend who want to do some light riding - Both the geldings have lots of energy and no health problems, just can't handle hard riding so this will be great for them.

Friday spend a good part of the afternoon tied to a patience pole - she will learn to stand tied, eventually :)

We are investigating buying alfalfa cubes to stretch our hay until first cutting. It's getting scarce here.
