Are you the producer of "Survivor"? Tonight, on Survivor, 2 teams fight over who's going to Outwit, Outplay and Outlast. After the challenge, two teams become one and someone is going home, someone is going to Exile island. Tonight, on Survivor.

Thank god no sparks or fire. And the worst part, electricians only work at one speed, and that's their own....

But not to worry... you'll be back..... In the meantime, get an abacus, and fold laundry by hand... :) 1,0,0,1,0,0, flip, 1,0,0,1,1,0,0,1,1,1, flip, .... hehehe....

Hey, when I get tired of competing with the ladies, you all might inspire me to go get a job where I can control a gazillion lab computers.

It's fun for awhile, but after a period of time, they borg you, instead of the other way around....
BTW, did you read what abner is running at home? That sounds like a bad little machine. I have never been so brave as to have water cooling. Electronics and water have always given me the shakes.

Miss March, in the Geeks Drool Calendar... :)

"No sparks, no flames, no pops, just dead."

I guess it could have been worse if there had been sparks, flames, pops and... just dead!

Good luck with the repairs and we'll hold down the folding fort until you return.

I play with high-power, fluid-cooled stuff every day at work. Above certain levels, fluid cooling is your only option.

I kind of like our individual competitions.

I like that too. I wasn't dispariging anyone. I just figured with near on 250 individuals, some of them may band together. I saw EXACTLY that when I was in the RC5 Distributed computing effect 8 years ago.

you all might inspire me to go get a job where I can control a gazillion lab computers.

Mine aren't lab computers. They are workhorses living in hell. Which means they have to get a whole bunch of TLC from me to make sure they survive. I've been in the business for 25 years. I've got my time in, I'm not a silver spooner.

BTW, did you read what abner is running at home?

I must have missed that one. I'm running a machine at home that is my gaming rig. The video card is a 7800GTX. While I considered water cooling for the CPU, I found that the Zalman 7700CNPS 2pound copper brick cools better than many water coolers. Of the first 17 machines I put up, it had folded 16% of the WUs. It rocks :). To date, since I started, it has folded 107 WUs. With 35 machines in, that's still 13%. Not a slouch :).

I think I hear Malsua coming into this conversation to tell you about his Zalman CNPS7000 CPU cooler...

*snicker* His CPU is so cool and fast he beat me posting by 2 minutes. See how good it works?

Heh, my "general" machine, which I post to FR is only an Athlon 2700. But the original point is accurate. At some point, you can only cool with water or a compressor. Pretty much all the CPUs available on the general market can be cooled pretty good with a Zalman 120mm copper brick. If you overclock big, you can go nutz using compressor cooling. That said, I have watched exactly the same CPUs water/air(zalman 7700 in a good Antec Case) and the 7700 is within half a degree.

No question, if you get a good water cooler you can overclock the shiznit out of a cpu. You can go insano with compressor cooling.

Hey Malsua, have you ever looked at VapoChill?

I have thought of getting together with a friend of mine in the A/C business to use a cheap water cooler compressor to achieve the same results, at a fraction of the cost. I've even discussed it with my 15 year old daughter as a project to teach her the joys of building gaming rigs. I let her build my last gaming rig with me and she really enjoyed the experience. Especially when it booted up the first time we hit the power switch. She couldn't believe it really worked! (That is the rig running the same Zalman cooler and Nitrous.) pic

Is that some type of venturi cooler? If so, the ones I've tested were very loud.

I may need to clarify what kind of "water cooler compressor" I'm talking about. The kind you put 5 gallon jugs in so employees have an excuse for not working.

I purchased one for under $80.00 and I can't stop thinking about converting the compressor to cool a processor.

Never looked at VAPOChill.

Neat idea. I'm a gamer. That's why I spent $450 bucks on my video card. hehe. I'm not real big on overclocking though. When I tried that a couple times in the mid 90s, I lost about $1500 bucks blowing up CPUs for my customers(when I ran my own business selling computers). This was before BIOS protected the works. I sorta lost my taste on it.

I'm a big fan of using good coolers on stock CPUs and clocking them to their max and seeing the temps never go over 100f.

I don't do first person shooters so much. Riddick was my most recent. That said, I'm drooling over Oblivian. My rig should run it great. Can't wait, should go gold in the next 10 days.

If you make the leap to fluid cooling, you don't need a compressor. A simple pump, radiator and fan will dissipate more heat then your PC could ever produce.

"Is that some type of venturi cooler?"

Nope, just a good, old fashioned freon block straped to your CPU. It requires a compressor and most are pretty quiet.

My Nitrous is a nonfunctional prop... just for looks!
