'Brokeback' Author Calls 'Crash' 'Trash'

The author of "Brokeback Mountain" is trashing the Motion Picture Academy and Best Picture Oscar-winner "Crash" in the wake of the film's upset loss at the Academy Awards.

In a commentary piece titled Blood on the Red Carpet posted on U.K.'s Guardian online, E. Annie Proulx called out "conservative heffalump academy voters" for not voting the gay-themed "Brokeback" Best Picture, and called "Crash" "Trash."

"Roughly 6,000 film industry voters, most in the Los Angeles area, many living cloistered lives behind wrought-iron gates or in deluxe rest-homes, out of touch not only with the shifting larger culture and the yeasty ferment that is America these days, but also out of touch with their own segregated city, decide which films are good," Proulx wrote in The Guardian.

Proulx also slammed studio Lions Gate for the method it used to get the film in front of voters.

"Rumor has it that Lions Gate inundated the academy voters with DVD copies of 'Trash' -- excuse me -- 'Crash' -- a few weeks before the ballot deadline," Proulx wrote. "Next year we can look to the awards for controversial themes on the punishment of adulterers with a branding iron in the shape of the letter A, runaway slaves, and the debate over free silver."

Proulx also implied that Los Angeles voters favored "Crash," because the film -- about tense race relations -- is set there.

"The choice was a hit with the home team since the film is set in Los Angeles," Proulx wrote. "It was a safe pick of 'controversial film' for the heffalumps."

The "Brokeback" short story author noted that the film version of her story was the big winner at the "funny, lively Independent Spirit awards."

"If you are looking for smart judging based on merit, skip the Academy Awards next year and pay attention to the Independent Spirit choices," Proulx wrote.

for the author of such a work of inspiration to the muddy helmet legions to call another's work 'trash' seems a bit of hypocrisy.

This POS is still whining? C'mon it's only an Oscar! I'm sure the author received the obligatory praise and hand-jobs backstage from fellow Hollywood elitists.

Those darned Canadians, I guess Annine ran out of Molson or Moosehead.

A little anger, jealousy, envy, arrognace and condescension there Annie?

Amazing how snotty and bitter all the good leftist "humanatarians" and "liberals" are when they don't get what they think they deserve. I thought they respected the will of "the people".

Why hypocrisy? If it takes one to know one, then I'd say it is more along the lines of professional opinion. When all of them are sitting deep in their own pile they themselves excreted, and nothing else is around, what else could they be tossing at one another?

Annie, I'm still trying to finish The Shipping News, which I started last fall. I keep waiting for something
(anything) to happen. I can't quit now, because I'm
pretty certain that I will get to the end without anything actually happening.
Get over yourself.

Yup, this story has been mentioned before. Do you want some cheese with that whine, Proulx? Get a clue: The awards are
subjective. God did not annoint you the rightful owner
of that statuette.
