When I lived in Radford, VA I joined the rescue squad. We used to interface with the other local rescue squads. The volunteer fire department over in Bluefield, West Virginia responded to a call with a cat in the tree. They took one of their fire trucks over equipped with a ladder to get the cat out of the tree. The rescue was a complete success and they were able to get the cat down. However, when the lady who owned the cat was telling them all what a bunch of nice young men they were, they backed the fire truck over the cat. One poor guy was trying to give mouth to mouth to the cat in order to revive it or possibly re-inflate it.

Probably Bush's fault that the cat got up there in the first place.

Clinton blames the NRA.

There was a British tail gunner on a bomber during WWII that did something similar. His airplane was on fire and he couldn't get to his parachute so he jumped. He hit a tree and a snow bank and was not injured at all. When the Germans asked him where his chute was he told them he didn't use one. After they figured out he actually didn't, he became quite a celebrity. They would take him around and kind of show him off to everybody as the luckiest guy in the world.

Fantastic! I guess the first 8000 feet don't really matter, it's what happens in the last 30!

It should be on the internet somewhere, I first read the story in Readers Digest. There was also a German girl whose plane crashed somewhere in South America. It was a medium size commercial airliner that disintegrated about a 1000 or so feet up over the jungle. She was still strapped in her seat and she remembered every bit of the fall. She was able to walk several miles out through the jungle and down rivers for help. This happened some time in the 60's.

Try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/free_fall and then scroll down to people surviving free fall. Isn't the internet fantastic?
