MIAMI (AP) -- Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after allegedly running a stop sign while in Florida during his team's series against the Marlins last weekend.
A few minutes before he was stopped, Bowden and his girlfriend were apparently involved in a physical altercation that left him with scratches and resulted in battery and resisting arrest charges against her.
A Miami Beach police report said the 44-year-old Bowden refused to take a breath-alcohol test after he was stopped at 2:22 a.m. Monday. An officer said he saw Bowden run the stop sign on Collins Avenue, a main thoroughfare in the South Beach neighborhood. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested, the report said.
The report said that "a strong smell of an alcoholic beverage" emanated from the gray 2006 Cadillac STS that Bowden was driving and that he had "bloodshot eyes, glassy eyes, flush red face and slurred speech." The arresting officers concluded that Bowden "was unable to operate a motor vehicle safely."

A second police report said that about 10 minutes before Bowden was pulled over, two officers saw he and his girlfriend, 36-year-old Joy Browning, arguing along nearby Ocean Drive. After assuring police that everything was fine, they drove off and allegedly ran through the stop sign.
Police then noticed that Bowden had scratches on his right ear and left cheek and told Browning she would be arrested for a domestic violence charge. She refused to get out of the car and struck one of the officers twice after he took her cell phone, police said.
Browning faces a May 8 arraignment on charges of felony resisting arrest with violence, resisting arrest without violence and simple battery. She was held in the Miami-Dade County jail until Tuesday afternoon, when she was released on $5,000 bond, jail officials said.
Oh, hell. And Robinson is two wins from 1000.

Bowden has actually done a pretty good job as Nationals' GM, given the bizarre circumstances imposed on teh club by the Omissioner, Bug Selig, and his chief henchman, Havana Pete, the Plague of Pratt Street. Given a limited budget, he did what he could with the pitching staff, got a slugger, and built up a very nice bench.
I hope he's around to continue his work. However, I don't think this incident will help him. And the Nats-hating iddiots in the DC media will pound this, instead of talking about the Nats, Caps, and Bull-er, Wizards winning the same night. Oh, and they'll bleat endlessly about the Redskins, of course, conveniently ignoring the three teams that are actually playing.
I bet they have to drop the domestic battery charge against the girlfriend, as Bowden is the chief witness and I bet he won't testify against her.
The sooner he can get back to running the Nationals, the better. They can't name an owner too soon, but knowing the Omissioner's record, it could be years.

Pre-season I was looking forward to the first pitch, and I thought all the talking down of the team was just filler space for the newspapers, the ownership scene, the new park and the idiots at the DC Council, the broadcast mess, the players lost to the World matches, and so on. But with all that no wonder ticket sales are down.
Me, while I've been itching to get to a game I don't have that immediate need like I did last year, and which got me to a bunch of games, trying out the park from different sections, enjoying it all. This year I'll just go a few times. I feel bad for the players and for Robinson. When I go, it'll be for them.
Too bad Bowden made a Miami scene. It's easy to do down there. Oh, and sounds like he's a better GM of ball players than girlfriends... He'd best make a trade and soon.

Did you see that Boswell column regarding the Os/Nats exhibition game? He suggested that Balt and DC fans ought to treat each other and each other's teams kindly, and join together for a joint heartfelt and damning Brooklyn cheer for Havana Pete.
I saw that column. It was silly.
I was at the exhibition game. Did you see how the Baltimroe fans were booed when they did their "O" thing during the Anthem? These two teams don't like each other.
The Nats are developing a pretty good thing with the Mutts, too, and it's only hieghtened by the fact that they hit 6 Nationals -- including one after the warning -- in the same game, but F-Rod hits one Met, and he's teh one guy ejected.
Silly, perhaps, that Boswell column, but I thoroughly enjoyed the thought of Os and Nats fans together booing Angelos. I left the Os with Davie Johnson, Mike Mussina, and the Havana business -- all of it thanks to Petie-boy. (Oh, and running Ripkin through the halls of Annapolis for his tobacco cash was butt ugly.) Thankfully, he ain't looking good these days on just about any count.
Yeah that Mets business was awful and unfair. Agreed. Speaking of, I ran into a "Mutts" fan yesterday and congratulated him on the current standings and wished him well in August. He replied, "August? August? Hello! Anybody seen the Mets?" lol! Hope so, although I'm not so sure this year.
