Prince Albert says he's father to girl, 14

PARIS - Monaco's Prince Albert II has acknowledged he is the father of a second illegitimate child, a 14-year-old girl living in California, his lawyer said in an interview published Thursday.

Albert, ruler of the tiny Mediterranean principality, "officially recognizes a paternity that was legally established a few weeks ago," lawyer Thierry Lacoste was quoted as saying in France's Le Figaro newspaper.

Albert had initially planned to keep his parentage of Jazmin Grace Rotolo secret until she reached adulthood, but "the situation had become untenable for her" in recent weeks amid increasing speculation about her father, Lacoste said.

Prince Albert is a brand of pipe tobacco sold by John Middleton, Inc. The brand gained widespread recognition, perhaps infamously, due to the classic prank call, where the caller asks if the store has "Prince Albert in a can" and when the unsuspecting clerk responds "yes", the caller follows up with "You'd better let him out (before he suffocates)!"

Despite (or perhaps, due to) this negative publicity, Prince Albert is one of the more popular independent brands of tobacco in the USA. More recently, it has also become available in the form of pipe-tobacco cigars.

Though there have been several Princes Albert in the monarchies of Europe, Prince Albert tobacco is not named for the most well known Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha who was husband and Prince Consort to Queen Victoria. Albert and Victoria's eldest son was also known as Prince Albert before he took the throne as Edward VII. The brand of tobacco was introduced after the Prince Consort's death, and the image on the can shows a man with full beard, which the Prince Consort did not wear. Also, wording on the package was changed somewhat once Prince Albert had become King Edward VII.

There are also variants of the joke involving King Edward brand cigars (named for Edward VII) and Martha White brand flour. The prank caller inquires if the store has "King Edward in a box" or "Martha White in a bag."

You are right. I do recall the british monarchs having all kinds of extramaritals and out-of-wedlock births.

I do wonder this: this girl is a waitress. I didn't think Albert would take up with "commoners". LOL

Well, the mother of William the Conqueror [aka William the Bastard] was a commoner, a tanner's daughter Arlette. And his father was married at the time, and not to her, either. It was not restricted to Britain, [or Normandy].

As I recall, Monaco amended their constitution a few years back so that the children of Princess Caroline will be next in line if Albert does not have any legitimate heirs.

We used to play this game called "The Wizard". It's kind of a card game.

To make the game work you have to have someone you can call on the phone that's "The Wizard". Their job is to "guess" the card you have a friend pick from a deck of cards. You have the friend pick any card at random from the deck so "there is no way the Wizard knows the card".

Once your friend picks the card you take the card and call "The Wizard". The Wizard is of course someone in on the prank. So, you have the card and you dial the phone and you say "is the Wizard there?". The person who is playing "The Wizard" immediately says "Spades, Clubs, Hearts, etc". When they pick the right one you say "Yes! I want the wizard!" and this tells them the right suite. Then "The Wizard" starts saying the card numbers then jack, queen, etc. When they get that right you say "Yes! Put the wizard on the phone!"

So now "The Wizard" knows that it's the Ace of Spades for example and they repeat it to be sure and then you say "yes! thank you!" or something else positive. You then hand the phone to your friend telling them that the wizard is there and "The Wizard" says in a very solemn tone "Ace of Spades" and hangs up. It's a good prank.

I wonder if kids do this any more. I suppose you could "modernize" the prank and using the same technique on the phone instead of saying the card on the phone have the wizard text message "Ace of Spades" or whatever to the person being pranked cell number.
