Vision of the Future – Serenity/Firefly
The Foundation is pleased to honor Joss Whedon for his work as writer and director of the film, Serenity (2005), based on his television series, Firefly. Whedon is the writer, director, executive producer and creator of several television series, most famously Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly. He was nominated for an Academy Award for the screenplay of Toy Story. The Foundation award, which has also been presented to the Producers of Star Trek – Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5, is given to a fictional program or movie which portrays a human future in space that has elements which are inspiring, possible, and at least attempts to work within the realm of physics.

"Serenity and Firefly are the first new hard science fiction film and TV show in years to acknowledge an economic system, and even give a nod to the reality of space, said Foundation Founder Rick Tumlinson. "From its portrayal of a civilization based on terraforming and free trade, to its multi-cultural aspects, it shows a possible future within which its characters go about the usual drama, comedy and skullduggery of any civilization anytime. Add to it the fact the space scenes take place in silence (the scientifically correct way things happen in space) and you have a winner in our books. We want the show back on the air!"

Firefly/Serenity had an original concept -- no weird space aliens. I tried to get some people interested in Firefly but when I explained that there were no space aliens and no soundwaves being transmitted in the vacuum of space, people looked at me like I was crazy. No space aliens? No things going "boom!" in space? What good is science fiction without space aliens going boom in space? How about stories with an intelligent plot? How about interesting characters who swear in Chinese? It is a shame more people don't appreciate it when they are presented with something original.

re: Firefly/Serenity had an original concept -- no weird space aliens)))

Noticed that, too--they even had a show with hucksters promising aliens to the gullible--

However much I love Firefly--it's not really sci-fi, but a fantasy western. There isn't much true sci-fi out there.

Oh come on! You mean that ECW isn't the perfect match for the SciFi channel?

You mean you'd rather have reruns of, say, MST, than wrestling?

I like the current incarnation of Battlestar Galactica..
I was a big Babylon 5 fan when the show was on..
I was a big Farscape fan when the show was first on..
But for only 13 episodes, I loved Firefly from the start. I don't think there will be another show like Firefly..

I liked Firefly, until I realized that ALL of the planets they visited are apparently in a single solar system.
Bit crowded, no?
Not to mention a few MAJOR issues with astrophysics that go way beyond legitimate "suspension of disbelief."

Oh good grief. Any entertaining show has a certain suspension of disbelief. The point here is that it was a great show with great writing and there are a significant amount of fans out there who really miss it.
