It did seem the US strategy was to foul the Italians a lot to keep them from developing any rhythm. The US fouled a lot. But if it works, then whatever it takes.

True enough. The Italians did not really have a coherent game play for the first half. The US did foul a bit excessively, but the minor stuff does not bother me as a tactical tool if not used too aggressively. Overt gross fouls should be called every time. Borderline game play fouls should be overlooked unless a player abuses it repeatedly.

I remember reading somewhere about the 1994 World Cup in the States that Diego Maradona, probably one of the top 2 or 3 best soccer players of all time, commented that "amazingly when I walk on the streets of, for instance, New York, no one seemed to recognize me or other fellow soccer players. The Americans seem to think it is another usual day."

Of course the converse has happened for the NFL star players when they played a demonstrative match in Australia in 2000. No body on the streets knew who they were.

True enough - though I'm sure the NFL players took up a little more room in their chairs...

I thought that call was harsh. The Norwegian commentators though it was nuts. Personally, I would call it a yellow card with a red tinge to it. It was a rather bad challenge.

I agree. It was probably borderline between yellow and red, but he went in with two feet and studs up, which is asking for trouble. The referee does not have the advantage of tv replays to make a call. I've seen red cards given for similar tackles many times, yellow cards other times. That's part of football. Pope's tackle was stupid, though, for a man already on a yellow.

Great performance from the US overall. I think they'll have it tough against Ghana though, with everything at stake for all the teams in the group. I don't see their win over the Czechs as the huge shock the US commentators were saying it was, especially with the Czechs missing their two strikers. African teams like Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Cameroun are very good sides, and are well capable of beating most European and South American teams.

I've been watching most of the games on Univision. They will prob. carry the 22-June USA-Ghana match.

I wont admit, I watched them in replay. you can contact the body upon hitting the ball. The tackles both hit ball and definitely did not deserve cards. He(the ref) was out of control.

Clever little jab throwing in the old "if you know the rules." -- So I guess I agree with you or I dont know the rules right?

Kinda left me in an unwinnable argument didnt you? - Unless of course you are wrong. which you are, he did not call a good game and I think you are in the minority on this one. PS the minority is dead wrong.

Though I have to hand it to the entire offense, if I was to single out a specific player, Keller would be the one.

The original, Andres Cantor, is no longer with Univision - still, you can fill in the blanks watching a Latino telecast: identify the players' names and listen to the rapid-fire staccato play-by-play. And keep it cranked!

Beer helps a little, too. And wear your favorite "kit", if you have one.

Brutal attack from the behind from the side, hardly brutal, he hit the ball.

it was a poor call.

Mastroeni gave him this opportunity and only he is the one to blame
wrong again, the ref is the one to blame. Mastro made a good challenge, albeit slightly late, he still got ball and the ref blew the call

I watched the game with father and brother, both cheered for the US and both agree with me.

Doesnt mean anything beyond the fact that the 3 of you are all mistaken. I sometimes think it would be nice to live in LaLa Land where you 3 dwell, I just like reality too much.

Thanks. Do you know what time (ET) the USA-Ghana match will be?

So the Czechs are going to fight like wounded tigers to win that match.

Arena need to petition to have the US-Ghana game postponed, say, at least by 30 minutes. As long as the US is ahead in the Ghana game, the Italians and Czechs can simply play for a tie. If both games are played at exactly the same time, as is now scheduled, then as soon as the US gets ahead, the Czechs and Italians just settle in for the tie, until Ghana ties it back up. That's why the Italy-Czech game must be played without knowing the results of the US-Ghana game. And that's why the US-Ghana game should be delayed.

BTW:

Totally off topic:

Bjorndalen is going to aim for competing in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics :-)

And Poles were the biggest immigrant group to Norway last year, in from of Somalians I believe.

I hope you have a good weekend, despite limited World Cup success. As a Norwegian, I know the feeling ;-)

It's BY FAR the most unattractive part of the sport and it really turns people off that are new to it.

Americans especially, we hate wussies, we like tough guys. It makes me sick seeing the players roll around and dive all game long, grabbing their shins and ankles. I never played like that, never will. Get fouled get up. Dont fake it. If people did that against me in a game I would make it a point to tackle them so they knew what constituted a real tackle and subsequently chastise them relentlessly.

10:00AM Eastern Time - on ESPN

Looks to be something like 1000 Eastern, but you might want to tune in earlier, what with EDT games at nine, noon, and fifteen, thus far.

Thank you all! :o)

A great point, there. Ever play pickup hoops? How often do you 'whistle' others when you're playing?
