LONDON - Author J.K. Rowling said two characters will die in the last installment of her boy wizard series, and she hinted Harry Potter might not survive either.
"I have never been tempted to kill him off before the final because I've always planned seven books, and I want to finish on seven books," Rowling said on Monday's "Richard and Judy" television show.
"I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who thinks, `Well, I'm gonna kill them off because that means there can be no non-author written sequels. So it will end with me, and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character'."
Rowling declined to commit herself about Harry, saying she doesn't want to receive hate mail.
"The last book is not finished. But I'm well into it now. I wrote the final chapter in something like 1990, so I've known exactly how the series is going to end," she said.
Rowling said people are sometimes shocked to hear that she wrote the end of book seven before she had a publisher for the first book in the series.
"The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly. One character got a reprieve. But I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die," she said. "A price has to be paid. We are dealing with pure evil here. They don't target extras do they? They go for the main characters. Well, I do."
Rowling is the richest woman in Britain _ wealthier than even the queen _ with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine last year at more than $1 billion.
Whatever she writes next, Rowling is sure of one thing: It won't be as successful as Harry Potter.
"I don't think I'm ever going to have anything like Harry again. You just get one like Harry."
I really don't care who dies. I just hate it when authors leave loose ends. So dead characters are better than unanswered questions.
What?
As long as she fries Jar Jar Binks I don't care.
Well Bill, she may as well fry him. No one else will.
She already killed Dumbledore, maybe because the actor who was playing him in the movie died in real life. They got a substitute for the movies he was supposed to be in, but he wasn't as charming as Richard Harris.
It's going to be hard if we lose Ron Weasley or Hermione Granger.
Sure hope she doesn't kill Harry.
The actor who now plays Dumbledore has NONE of Richard Harris' kindness, thoughtfulness, or puckishness. He is completely without charm.
She also killed Sirius, and that was a blow.
Hey, ping to some HP news!

Oh, JK. I'm your number one fan. I just can't wait to see how the series ends... What's this? Harry can't be dead... He has to live. You dirty bird!!!
A couple interesting things that Rowling has done has been to teach a generation of children that there is evil (not just bad choices) in the world and that newspapers and politicians cannot be trusted to tell the truth, that they may have a personal agenda that distorts their perception.
And that some teachers cannot be trusted either and may be aligned with evil.
Noooooooooooooooo!!! Don't kill Harry!!!
Oh, wait...
She's killed Harry's parents and both of his father figures. I wonder if her plan is to kill everyone close to Harry.
I never really cared for Sirius, and his character was never fully fleshed out. In fact I got annoyed with the way Harry got obsessed with him after his "death" (lamest killing of all time).
I think the series is great, but I wholly expect there to be some deaths. Somehow Snape is going to be the hero in the end.
Harry Potter is for wusses.
My money is unfortunately on Harry and Ron. :-(
>>Two 'Potter' Characters Will Die
Which ones?
--Col. Sherman T. Potter (Harry Morgan), M.A.S.H
--Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore) from It's A Wonderful Life
--Ocious P. Potter (villain played by John Goodman), the Borrowers...
Potter Ping! Thanks for the heads up, bella_bru!
Is it possible that all the wizardry and magic is in the fantasy mind of a little boy who is abused and forced to live in a pantry under the stairs? That would be a true lesson of good and evil.
Maybe we can look forward to a Dallas type ending.
Dumbledore's death had nothing to do with the fact that Richard Harris died.
Harry has to kill Snape as revenge for Dumbledore. My money's on a Weasley for the other - Ron or Ginny.
As long as she doesn't kill Hermione, I'm cool.
Hermione is Rowling's alter ego in the fantasy world. No way an author kills "herself" off.
My money is going to Lupin (Wormtail has a sterling silver hand, afterall) and McGonagell (I'm sure I butchered her name). Remember when she yelled to Umbridge (paraphrased), "I'll make sure Harry Potter is an auror if it's the last thing I ever do!"
~Or~
Possibly Draco Malfoy-- just because he's such a little wussy mamma's boy.
I thought McGonagal was a goner in #5 when she took 4 stunners to the chest.
Amen!!!
Sez you! ;^P
I never thought about Hagrid. He just seems indestructible.
Yeah but Hagrid would take one for the team.
Me too. She's a tough cookie.
Yeah, he would. He may go down, but I think he'd make darn sure he took 5 or 6 of their guys down with him.
Supposedly, since HPGOF there have
always been clues about the coming story
lines. Because of the many times Harry
has stated that Hogwarts is his HOME,
and having assured Lucius Malfoy that
he, Harry, "will always be at Hogwartz
to guard against future dark forces,"
I've come to see Harry as the destined
Head Master of the school. And I also
don't believe Dumbledore is dead; too
aligned with the Phoenix resurrection
and the Pence Font.
As for the two kids to be killed off,
I'm suggesting Lucius' son Malfoy as one
of them. In "The Half-Blood Prince," we
saw Malfoy making some really strange
choices of action and loyalty. He's
absolutely agog at being chosen by The
Dark Lord as a servant, despite the
attempts of Dumbledore to prevent it.
The other Hogwarts kiddo who is my
candidate for extraction is Neville
Longbottom. Voltemort had used the
Excruciatious Curse on Neville's
parents and they are still locked
up in the Asylum. I anticipate Neville
running afoul of Voltemort in some
kind of revenge scene, with Neville
losing the battle. Again as per clues
in the various books.
She will kill Kenny, They always do.
Shades of Rudy on 24.
Neville's had a hard life. Both parents tortured into insanity then raised by his strict grandmother. Not good at sports or academics. I don't think JK would kill him.
So there won't be a "Gone with the Wizard?"
Let's see, isn't the story that Neville was born on the same day as Harry? And the 'prophecy' about "the chosen one" could apply to either Harry or Neville?
I'm guessing that Neville is, in fact, the chosen one. The twist would be incredible.
And agreed, Dumbledore isn't dead for good. The phoenix connection and all seems to foreshadow that.
I'm thinking of what happened in 'Dragonslayer', where the wizard had himself killed on purpose, as a precedent/influence.
That thought has occurred to me as well.
Extra points if Snape gets it in the nape of the neck.
BTW Severus of Antioch:
was by birth and education a pagan, who was baptized in the martyry of Leontius at Tripolis.
He almost at once openly united himself with the Acephali, repudiating his own baptism and his baptizer, and even the Catholic church itself...
Severus is said to have stirred up a fierce religious war among the population of Alexandria, resulting in bloodshed and conflagrations. To escape punishment for this violence, he fled to Constantinople...
Severus was eagerly dispatched by Anastasius to occupy the vacant patriarch of Antioch, and the very day of his enthronement solemnly pronounced in his church an anathema on Chalcedon, and accepted the Henoticon he had previously repudiated.
If Neville is the chosen one, that puts a whole new spin on the entire series . . . Voldemort was after the wrong guy all along!!!
No, I have a real strong feeling that Snape's offing of Dumbledore was not as it seemed.
Snape may turn out to have been a good guy all along.
Where does that come from?
I just like Hermione 'cause she earns what she gets through hard work, rather than through birthright or outrageous luck.
As far as I'm concerned Harry can buy it. Snape, too. And Malfoy.
But she has lots of characters to choose from.
I guess, I hope its not a Weasley, either.
As long as she doesn't kill off characters to avoid answering questions.
TS
I hope Fenrir dies a painful death at the hands of Bill or Lupin.
I kept thinking that at the end of the sixth book. Dumbledore could search for the remaining horcruxes more easily if everyone thought he was dead.
I'm afraid Snape IS a good guy.
It seems pretty obvious that Snape killed Dumbledore because Dumbledore wanted to be killed (apparently he'd been horribly maimed and cursed in the search for Voldemort's whatchamacallits...) AND it would get Snape into Moldywarts inner circle. Snape also refused to kill, maim or carry off Harry Potter when he had a chance.
He's a good guy.
Nope. Neville is going to end up as Herbology professor at Hogworts.
Reread Half-Blood Prince. Dumbledore goes over, in painstaking detail, why Harry is the chosen one. In short, it is because Voldemort marked him as his equal when he tried to kill him and ended up sharing some of his powers with Harry and he didn't mark Neville.
Here's the prophecy, just for reference...
