Basso, Ullrich kicked out of Tour de France

STRASBOURG, France (AP) - A doping scandal knocked Tour de France favorites Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso out of the race Friday and threw the world's most glamorous cycling event into chaos.

The decision to bar Ullrich, Basso and others implicated in a doping probe in Spain also sent a strong signal that cheating, or even suspicions of cheating, will not be tolerated.

All the effort to get Armstrong backfired bigtime on the French. Now the Tour is in ruins.

Sounds like they are banning them by "implication" only. It is up to the banned riders to "prove they are innocent". This is majorly screwed up.

What were those guys thinking??? That is just plain dumb considering the heat that Armstrong was getting recently.

I wouldn't necessarily say the Tour is in ruins. It will still be an exciting race.

Basso and Ullrich out??!!! Wow. Backfired bigtime. What a shame. This Tour will certainly be notable - for all the wrong reasons.

Italy cheaters in Soccer, Spain cheaters in the Tour de Frogland. You can't blame them, they live in a society where everything is OK if it makes you feel good. They just wanted to feel good about themselves. Next year everyone should get a yellow jersey. That way no one will feel bad because of all the nasty pressure to work hard to actually EARN something. That is just not fair. Not everyone has motivation and to punish those that don't is just mean.

Oh no, it is RUINED.

No Ullrich vs. Basso?

Who wants to watch the sprinters, who do nothing until 2km left to go? There wont be any fast time trials, no real attacks in the mountains, nothing. BORING!

The only notable American rider caught up in it is Tyler Hamilton who is already on 2 years probation. This opens the door for George Hincapie, Floyd Landis & Levi Leipheimer, all Americans. It's notable that Discovery Team is NOT involved. It could be 1-2-3 USA finish.

With Ulrich, Basso and Armstrong out it will be an exciting race? Maybe, but even the die-hard fans in the US just lost a mjor reason to watch. If an exciting race happens and nobody sees it, is it still an exciting race?

Dude! George Hincapie won the TOUGHEST mountain stage of last years tour. He's a hell of a climber and sprinter. Floyd Landis already won the Tour of California and Paris - Nice this year. There will be plenty of action

You know I always wondered how Ullrich got off without any heat on him for doping when Armstrong was winning. He had already been caught doping and if it weren't Lance winning, Ullrich would have. Seem like he would have been the more likely candidate to be doping. And now that seems true.

Yeah, Hincapie was on fire on that climb. I doubt without Lance that the team will have the same spirit to protect their leader and go all out up those hills. I wish George well, but the odds are way against him even now. I just read the Vino is out too, so none of my favorites will be riding.

Now that Basso and Ullrich are out of the Tour, there are at least three Americans with a real chance of winning this thing. USA viewers were more likely to watch an Italian and a German?

Well, they really don't do anything serious until there's two hundred meters to go, not 2 KM's. They'd blow up like the Hindenburg if they started a move at 2 KM's.

George lives a few minutes from me on Paris Mountain, outside of Greenville, SC. Here's a picture of my son George with big George taken at George Hincapie Day after Le Tour last year:

My son will be 10 in december and will start competing in official bike races next spring.

The decision... also sent a strong signal that cheating, or even suspicions of cheating, will not be tolerated.

This leaves it wide open for one cyclist to be able to file a doping accusation against another in order to eliminate a competitor.

It also means that the French take bicycling more seriously than they do global security.

This American was more likely to watch a German with HUGE lungs. Man, he drove me crazy. I suspect that Ann Coulter has the same effect on some of you's men. There is nothing like watching a man with huge lungs climb up a mountain. I'm having vapors and I'm not from the south.

"even suspicions of cheating, will not be tolerated."

Equates to guilty until proven innocent. It puts the onus on the accused and is a fundamentally flawed approach.

WOW! It now looks like Vinoukorov May be out too. 5 members of his ASATA team have been implicated and if they are banned the team will have to withdraw as they will not have the mandatory 6 riders.

This is beginning to look more and more like Discovery might have a chance to run away and sweep the podium.

If one or two can stay at the top for the first week then the media whoreds will latch on and the ratings will follow.

If Vino is out then that means that none of the top 5 from least year will be racing this year. The sixth place rider from last year will be racing though, and that's: Levi Leipheimer

LOL! This american was more likely to watch Basso because he's cute just standing still! Total bummer. But we have to remember: they've only been named as targets (along with half of western europe) of the ongoing doping investigation by the spanish police (the equivalent of 'persons of interest') so their respective teams can't let them ride per federation rules, regardless of guilt or innocence. For all we know, the spanish unit "investigating" this could be as much on the up and up as the prosecutor's office in Durham North Carolina. But I can be as shallow & fickle as the next woman, so now Hinkie's my new main man! We definitely know he's one of the good guys!
