Firefox use growing around the world, study says

After a brief period of little growth this spring, The Mozilla Foundation’s open-source Firefox Web browser is again gaining ground on Microsoft Corp.’s Internet Explorer (IE).

In its latest study on Web browser usage, Netherlands-based OneStat.com said Sunday that Firefox gained 1.14 percent in June and is now used by 12.93 percent of surfers. That’s up from 11.79 percent who used Firefox in May, while IE use declined by 2.12 percent to 83.05 percent.

“We thought that Firefox growth had slowed down,” said Niels Brinkman, a co-founder of OneStat.com. “It seems it’s increasing again. That’s a little bit of a surprise to us.”

The study results were released just before Mozilla.org released the first public beta of the next version of Firefox. Beta 1 of Firefox 2.0 was made public Tuesday.

Last November, OneStat.com’s survey pegged Firefox browser usage globally at 11.51 percent, up 2.82 percent from April 2005. IE at the time had a global usage share of 85.45 percent, down 1.18 percent from April 2005.

If someone hasn't tried Firefox there are two main advantages.

1. Its safer.
2. There are thousands of extensions that allow massive additional capabilities.

I can't use it anymore for some reason. Every time I open the Firefox browser it crashes within 5 or 10 minutes. I make sure to update the version that I have whenever necessary but it doesn't help. It's a shame because I really enjoyed using Firefox, but now I have had to go back to IE, which I hate.

I've been seeing reports of this lately - did you by any chance install an extension that saved your session or allowed reopening of closed tabs?

I don't think so. But I do remember installing an extension that was supposed to allow me to play the songs I have on my RealPlayer directly from the FF browser. It didn't work.

That sounds like Foxy tunes - I've never used it for Realplayer but I use it all the time for Winamp and Itunes.

Possible solutions:

1. Uninstall and reinstall
2. Delete your profile and start a new profile\

I should have mentioned that - the ability to surf multiple sites and quickly change between them is a major draw.

Don't forget the AdBlock extension! Good for more than just ads. Find those goofy graphics that some Freepers insist on including in every post annoying? AdBlock the graphic. Ah, nice clean browsing...

Firefox causes freeze ups on my iMac and the only way to clear it is to do a forced shutdown. I am not running any extensions that I know of. I am currently using Camino and have no problems except it won't let me rename links in the toolbar favorites. I can't find 'manage bookmarks'.

Safrai has short comings for my browsing. I have 7 browsers loaded...

I have seen this behavior on windows with many apps (though not with firefox)... Have you tried completely uninstalling Firefox then installing it again?

Every time I open the Firefox browser it crashes within 5 or 10 minutes.

It seems to be related to image processing. If you load multiple, image-heavy sites there must be some kind of memory leak, because within about 15 minutes all of the Firefox windows will lock up, forcing you to kill them with Task Manager (in Windows). If you stay on FR and Yahoo! all day, you won't notice any problems.
