Bomar off OU football team

From Staff and Wire Reports Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops says he's dismissing two players from the Sooner football team. Oklahoma confirmed that two players had been dismissed by the team but did not identify them. The school said in a statement that the players violated NCAA rules by working at a private business and taking "payment over an extended period of time in excess of time actually worked."

Oklahoma City television station KWTV reported that Bomar, who set an Oklahoma freshman record with 2,018 passing yards after taking over as the Sooners' starter in the second game last season, was one of the two players who had been permanently dismissed.

"We spend a considerable amount of time addressing our players regarding their personal conduct and the NCAA rules," head coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. "They know exactly what we expect from them. Ultimately, they have to make right decisions. The same holds true for our boosters. When they do not, the consequences are serious, and we will not tolerate this behavior.

"Our team and university actions are necessary because of the intentional participation and knowledge of the student athletes in these violations," Stoops said.

A top-rated recruit out of high school, Bomar redshirted his first season while 2004 Heisman Trophy winner Jason White completed his career. Bomar lost a quarterback competition to Paul Thompson last fall, but was named the starter after the Sooners lost to TCU in the first week.

He started Oklahoma's final 11 games and completed 54 percent of his passes, while throwing 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Oklahoma finished 2005 by winning six of its final seven games, including a victory against Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.

"I firmly believe that our program is stronger than any individual player and that a championship program cannot compromise its values," Stoops said in the statement.

OK. This sucks. But, you know what...this kid has had problems since he got here on and off the field. He has never lived up to the hype that preceded him. He's cocky to a fault and has a sense of entitlement like most so-called "scholar-athletes." He gets what he deserves. Kudos to Bob Stoops for doing the right thing.

Ok, enlighten me on what rules they actually violated. It reads to me as if they worked for a private business and they were paid more then the time they actually worked. Why is that bad? What am I missing? I have to confess I am not a big football fan so really am lost here about this rule:).

They are getting paid but not working...booster is paying them off. Can't do that if you are an NCAA athlete.

It’s a way to hide payola to the student/athlete, which is a big no-no.

Only the coaches and administrators are supposed to get paid, not the kids who put the asses in the seats.

More proof that Division One schools should just convert their "scholar-athletes" to minor leagues and be done with it.

Boosters in the past would promise star recruits that if they came to the Univ. of Oklahoma (or anywhere, mind you) that they would be given a job where they didn't have to show up to get paid, or given overtime they didn't work. It is an illegal inducement and in a sense, pay for play, and a method of drawing recruits to a program that needed them. It is said that former player Brian Bosworth used to work a few hours at a GM plant and did nothing but maliciously screw loose bolts underneath the chassis for no reason, and still get full pay. Things have changed.

For anyone else in the world this would be a good thing. For an NCAA athlete, it's a BIG violation of the rules. The team can lose scholarships, bowl appearances, tv revenue... all sorts of good things.

And the beauty of the NCAA is that it's a "volunteer" organization that can pick and choose how it wants to enforce the rules. Typically teams in the South and Southwest get punished MUCH more severely for the same violation than would a team from the Northeast.

Maybe the players weren't paying United Auto Workers dues like they're supposed to for jobs like that. :-)

Take it from someone who knows. OU needs to get rid of that booster too - hard and quick.

Ok, I get it. I wasn't thinking it through. The old pay for no work routine to hide the fact the school is actually paying them to play football(or some other sport). Gotcha!

Thanks to all the responses to my questions, you can always count on FReepers to have the answers!:)

the Sports Animal is reporting that he worked for Big Red Sports and Imports, which ironically is one of their station's biggest advertisers.

As someone who went to the University of Texas, I salute Bob Stoops for doing the right thing. Bomar really has given Stoops headaches over the last couple of years.

Yeah, sounds like what the politicians do all the time, doesn't it? Maybe we should get the NCAA to perform oversight on our Senators and Representatives.

They can get paid but it has to be done within the rules. Not the first time that a booster got too generous.
