Best Firearm for RV?

Posted on 08/03/2006 6:45:43 PM PDT by SantaLuz

I posted a little while back that my family and I are in the final planning stages of taking a sabbattical year and travelling the US in an RV: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1650540/posts

Although I currently don't have a firearm at home I'm thinking about purchasing one to take on the RV. But I have some questions/concerns:

- Is is legal to carry a gun in an RV? What kind of permit would I need to cross state lines? - What would the best weapon be to use in an RV park where a missed shot could easily travel through other RVs in close proximity? Shotgun? - Is it legal to purchase a taser-gun?

I'd appreciate any recommendations.

Similar subject has been covered in depth on FR. Please review them. The basic question is "Are you ready to take another human life?" If not don't get a gun.

Depends on the RV. Some of them can't handle anything over a 30mm.

Something to carry in the RV. We plan on doing some occasional "boondocking" in the wilderness and I thought I should have some protection against someone/something trying to break into the RV.

RV to cramped for shotgun....I would have a 4 inch barreled .357, shooting self defense .38 special rounds...and why on earth would you be shooting outside your RV at an RV park....you will go to jail for sure unless you show them the BEAR that attacked you.....

Ruger GP-100....take classes if you haven't already....and never use the fu**er unless you mean business

I think Taser Guns are sold in Texas but they are kind of expensive I hear, not that I would know. Sounds like a shotgun would be right up your alley, aim and spray

I say a 12 gauge. Short range stopping power, and you don't need to be a good shot.

Laws are different from state to state. A loaded rifle may be ok in one state but not in another. Same for Tasers. Using any gun in an RV is not much different than using one in a car. Who are you going to hit in your family? Consider a trained dog and OC pepper spray. I assume you have no firearms training, if I am correct you do not have enough time between now and you departure to gain sufficient knowledge to have a firearm for self defense.

The gun would be hidden and unloaded at all times since I have children. I would only consider using it in an extreme life threatening situation. Pepper-spray will be something we take as well. Both my wife and I have some firearm training but from years ago. I've used a shotgun in skeet shooting and have fired various rifles and handguns in the past. We would be leaving in about 2 months time. Is that enough time to become knowledgeable enough?

I think you are going to have to know the rules of every state you are entering.
