Expert: 'Do we have a wack-job or a murderer?'
By Sue Lindsay and Charlie Brennan, Rocky Mountain News August 17, 2006
Legal and law enforcement experts have begun to express outward skepticism about claims by a teacher that he killed JonBenet Ramsey.
John Mark Karr told reporters in a press conference last night in Thailand he was with the 6-year-old beauty queen when she died nearly 10 years ago. He said the death was accidental, as part of a botched kidnapping effort. When asked how he entered the familys Boulder home, he declined to comment.
But investigators in Thailand have told the Associated Press that Karr has made several other statements to them, including claims that he picked JonBenet up from school the day she was killed and that he drugged her. JonBenet was on Christmas vacation at the time, so school was not in session, and there was no evidence of drugs found in JonBenets body during the autopsy.
So far, there is no paper trail of Karr being in Colorado. Police in Boulder said today that they have no record of ever having contact with him.
Denver defense lawyer Larry Pozner said Karr's news conference confession, televised late last night, was bizarre.
"Is this just an obsessive guy craving his 15 minutes of fame? There are those people who confess under circumstances where we immediately know, this is real. This isnt one of them," Pozner said. "We have to withhold judgment because he has not given enough facts for us to decide: Do we have a wack-job or a murderer?"
Denver lawyer and former prosecutor Craig Silverman expressed similar reservations.
"This confession is nonsensical and it appears to be delusional. To claim this was an accident is ridiculous. It's hard to imagine a more intentional, deliberate murder than hitting a girl with sufficient force to split her skull open and to fashion a garrote and twist it until she stops breathing."
A former investigator knowledgeable about the case watched a press conference by Boulder District Attorney Mary Lacy this morning and said he was concerned about what she said - and didnt say.
"Her statements about, 'I wish that we could have continued (the investigation) in this vein, rather than in the public eye,' I agree with her in that regard. Because, for her sake, I hate to predict whats going to come down if this whole things falls apart and they drag a guy 12,000 miles back from Bangkok only to get his 15 minutes of fame and a free ticket back to America."
The prosecutors could go with Dan Rather logic. Since no one can prove that he didn't kill her than his confession must be true.
I'm reserving judgement, but this guy seems like he wants his 15 minutes of fame..
I find it strange that the FBI gets involved and does an international extradition from Thailand unless they had some good evidence. This person is a pervert of the worst sort, and I think is playing the crazy card to try to get off.
If this is a hoax confession, he should be sent back to Thailand to be tried for his crimes there
If he's whack - send 'im back!
Apparently he was keeping up an email correspondence, for several years, with someone in Boulder who did a documentary on this case.
He may have developed an obsession about it, and so become convinced that he did the murder. False confessors are often quite convincing - they have already convinced themeselves.
I'll take whack-job for $500 Arec........he wants to be JonBenet's killer, but he isn't.
Opps, this fellow fled, so he ain't as whacked as he would like people to believe.. Also this fellow collected tons of info on the case, so he knows he is giving misleading info... and I assume it is on purpose. I think they may have their man. IMHO...
Prison in Thailand vs prison here.
Either he is a nut case or he really did kill her but is making his story so bizarre that no one will believe it. He confesses and gets off. Personally I still think one or more of her family were involved. If they weren't I'll apologize to them here on FR.
Greta V.S. sure was quick to believe in the confession. She always thought the Ramseys were innocent so this was her chance to prove it.
If I were Silverman, I would keep my mouth shut. He is an idiot.
I understood that this sleazy guy, John Mark Karr, was under indictment for child pornography in California, then he fled the country rather than appear in court. And he hasn't returned to the USA until now.
If his confession to murdering JonBonet Ramsey is a hoax, he should face the charges against him in California, adding the charges that he skipped bond.
This guy needs to be put in a U.S. prison and NOT returned to any other country, where he could continue to teach school and come in contact with children.
I'm thinking this guy is a WHACK JOB who did NOT commit the murder. He's just so WHACKY that he confessed to a murder he didn't commit. Some folks are just that WHACKY.
NOTHING adds up. Not DNA, not the ransom note, not the little girls wacky parents, not the details of this guy's story. Nothing. He's a nobody, IMO.
He's a nutter. I think there is actually a clinical condition where somone so obsessed with a crime, eventually confesses to it...though absolutely innocent of it.
I suspect God is making sure no more kids are put in his care.....I vote he's a whack job, but then again a whack job killed Jonbonet, so it's a draw.
Yeah, crazy like a fox. If he was writing a book about and had previously written a research paper in college about the Ramsey case then he knows the publicly released version of the autopsy says no drugs detected.
OTH, an actual toxicology report page is missing from the nine page autopsy report and the two lines on the first (summary) page showing nothing found looks inserted after the fact. JMO
The thing that tweaks me is his ex-wife's statement that he was with them on Christmas Day in 96. They had 3 young children, so I think a father's absence on that day would be easily remembered, so I don't really see how he could have done it unless she is lying.
She got a divorce decree that does not allow him any contact with the kids and that says something about how she feels about his character right there.
You can bet LE in every jurisdiction with a missing or murdered girl of similar age range is looking at him hard now and his DNA is going to get compared to a lot of cold cases.
I was reading your reply and I didn't even have to look at the screen name to know it was you! LOL. Obviously spending too much time reading the DUmmie FUnnies on my part!
Whack job! By the way ,on Imus this morning he stated that this bozo and Lamont are identical twins!
I'm leaning towards hang him any way.
Execute him and then get on with finding the real killer.
Not the guy. Too many holes. Oh, and despite what the MSM is saying about him living here in GA near the Ramsey's house? BS. Conyers is 50 miles from my house at least and I live closer than they did.
If he's a false confessor, how did he leave his DNA at the crime scene?
Since when do we banish US citizens for commiting crimes? What is this, medieval Europe?
"I find it strange that the FBI gets involved and does an internation extradition from Thailand unless they had some good evidence."
Don't forget, it was the FBI (and several MSM folks) who thought Richard Jewell was responsible for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing.
To my knowledge, there is no evidence of a DNA match to date.
A stateside murder 2 conviction would be better than a Thai prison for a weak and pretty young man...
Whack Job gets my vote.
I always thought Mrs. Ramsey found Mr. Ramsey and Jon Benet in bed and killed her daughter in a writ of fealous jage.
Just my opinion.
I'm leaning really hard toward him wanting a free trip back to America to escape a cell in Thailand.
I thought it was a jit of realous fage, but I'm old and forgetful. Forgetable?
But what about the news stating that he knows certain information that could only be known by the killer? I am fully aware that it's very puzzling.
People keep saying that he is facing prison here or in Thailand but he was taken into custody in Thailand specifically because US authorities told them to arrest him. He didn't commit a crime in Thailand and doesn't face prison there. I think this guy is a whack-job whether he is guilty or not but let's keep our facts straight.
Just as an aside, which may or may not be illuminating, anyone wishing to gain some insight into the nature of life in a Thai prison should check out the very graphic descriptions of Warren Fellows. Fellows was an Ozzie found guilty of drug trafficking in Thailand. After his release, twelve years later, he wrote a couple of utterly horrifying accounts:
Fellows, Warren, 40,000 Days: My Life and Survival in a Bangkok Prison
Fellows, Warren, The Damage Done: Twelve Years of Hell in a Bangkok Prison
Not that it sheds any light on anything, but personally I'd confess to donating money to the Golden Hordes of Genghis Khan and/or murdering Joan of Arc if it'd keep me out of such a place. Utter, absolute nightmare.
His pants were so high, he was practically wearing them around his neck. Obviously not wearing his own clothes, very ill fitting...so what did the Thai cops do with Karr's clothes? No belt, and he looks as if he has a screw loose.
I clarified myself later and said this fellow fled the US to avoid prosecution. Sorry I misworded earlier.
I don't believe we banish citizens unless they are extradited for trials for crimes committed out of country, or treason.
"It is hard to imagine being chained to a wall in a small dark stone cell stinking of sh** & pi** with 12+ other prisoners, one bucket for defecation, savage rats attacking you while you sleep, cockroaches, beatings & worse!"
Well at least they don't put panties on your head over there.
This is getting more and more ridiculous. What is he, the Lee Harvey Oswald of the Ramsey murder? :-)
I was kind of skeptical about this guy. Especially with the ransom note.Leaving a ransom note doesn't seem like something a child molester would do.
Well, that throws another wrench into it.
So why all the reports yesterday about him being arrested in Thailand on some sort of sexual perversion charges? I don't remember the exact term used.
Geez, it's gettin' so ya can't believe ANYTHING you hear on the news or read in the newspapers.
I am leaning towards whack-job too. When pressed for details about the murder he had "no comment"
I am guesssing when facing life in a bangkok jail for child sex crimes -vs- life in jail in US, he chose US.
Second guess- he goes back to BKK to jail when his confession is proven to be a fraud
Hey I've been wrong before and decidedly shameless aboutmaking new predictions.
I thought Osama was dead in Toa Bora- I guess he isn't but I bet his ears are still ringing....
