ARE WE BLIND? (It’s all fun and games until they zot your eye out)

Posted on 08/19/2006 8:54:00 AM PDT by AmericanDragon

Call any Tech Support line, or your bank for that matter. Do you get a fellow American on the other end? Or do you get someone in India that can't help you and just gives you the run around because they don't know any better (which doesn't matter because you can't understand them anyway!). This is not only happening in the Call Center field, but in Technology, Animation and other Media and so forth. This takes away millions of jobs from Americans and at the same time, we have millions of people coming from India who are getting grants to buy or open their own businesses in which they only hire others of their own kind or treat you like a slave if your not. News has it that India is on the rise..of coarse they are!....We're helping them and suffering because of it. In the hotel industry, Indians are buying the hotels left and right, cutting down on staff and making the remaining American staff work three times as hard for minimum wage while they put other Indians who have no clue in what they're doing, in charge, giving orders and making the big bucks. The American workers have no choice but to deal with it in the communities where work has become scarce. This is why America is in such bad shape! We are not helping third world countries..we're hanging ourselves!

Absolutely. I called Sallie Mae Servicing two days ago--a govt education loan organization. After a few clicks, I got this fellow with an American first name having a heavy and pronounced Indian accent. He couldn't tell me one iota of what I was asking for. He repeated verbatem twice what the organization had already written in a letter I received. When I asked a question, he read off the content of my letter twice. Before he hung up, he asked if there was anything else he could help me with, I retorted that he didn't help me previously why would I think he would help me with anything else and hung up. I am so thoroughly disgusted.

"Or do you get someone in India that can't help you and just gives you the run around because they don't know any better"

I get plenty of that from my fellow Americans.

I have worked extensively in tech-support call centers. The reason they went to India is because the people working at the ones here generally knew nothing and cared even less. Turnover was MASSIVE.

We had a consutant come in to evaluate the employees when we were changing insurance companies. They were thinking about instituting drug testing. The consultant advised against it because in his estimation 80% of the work force couldn't pass a drug test.

You think you can't undrstand people in India? Try getting Shinequa in Memphis to explain TCP/IP to you.

You can blame India, but it is American youth that killed tech support in America.

My experience with imported Indians in the IT industry is that they are profoundly racist and usually seek to replace their American colleagues with other Indians.

"You can blame India, but it is American youth that killed tech support in America."

Well, you do have a point. But there are oases of fine technical support that still exist. IBM/Lenovo still has good phone support for its laptops; National Instruments has absolutely superb support folks; Luxsci.com and Speakeasy excel for support in the IT fields... while we all bash the bad ones, it's even more important to praise the good ones, and give them our business.

I do not believe it is the American youth that killed tech support but the hiring manager(s). When you hire incompetent, untrained personnel and put them in a job they cannot handle guess what, the jobs get outsourced. It is not the American worker in most instances but the almighty dollar which dictates which jobs stay in the states and which jobs leave. My experience with calling help centers is not very good and I use the internet forums for specific topics. I oftentimes get an answer via email which solves my problem. Of course if you purchased a new Dell PC, etc. and have to call for warranty service you are caught holding the proverbial bag. Please don't blame American youth for the shortcoming of corporate greed and mismanagement. I speak from experience and not from the hip! I have seen it happen with many corporations (technology, banking, etc.). What's wrong with having a conversation with someone you cannot understand, isn't even an American citizen and doesn't have the answers even if you could understand them. /sarcasm (well maybe)

I am not speaking only of IT support centers, but outsourcing in general along with the fact that we has so many others coming to America and opening businesses. I work in the hotel industry as a general manager, because they do not want to hire proper help, I am forced to be General Manager, Head of Maintenance, Payroll, Head of Housekeeping, etc..etc..(where there used to be employees to handle those things).Every Indian owned hotel I've seen is like this. If the pilot is loading luggage, serving drinks, tending to passengers and so forth...who the hell is flying the plane?

LOL! I know where you are coming from.

Seriously, though. Most of the people in the call centers I worked in were straight from the local grocery store or fast food joint. They had a PC at home, could get around in Windows so they were hired. Personally, I think the call-center model as a whole is a debacle by design but that is a whole other thread.

If you really have to ask these questions, then you need to stop posting, and lurk a while. Take your time, read the threads/posts, and learn how FR works.

It will help you avoid trouble, including be labelled a troll, getting zotted, or being told to go back to "DU" (Democtratic Underground, a vile, subversive leftist website).

I have been visiting freerepublic for the past week. Few days back, some of the folks here wanted to ban Pepsi because it was headed by an Indian hindu woman...and now this ?

The reality of globalisation is, technology makes geography redundant, any work that can be done on a computer in US, can as well be done in India. And no, contrary to popular perception, I dont think an avg. American worker is somehow innately superior to an avg. Indian worker when it comes to writing C++ programs.

Some people have difficulty in accepting the fact the people are basically the same all over. There is this subconscious racism that leads an American like the the poster of this thread to get upset over outsourcing to India, but not to Ireland or Israel.

Because of technology and globalisation, we have for the first time in history a situation where hundreds of millions of Indian and Chinese workers and so on, now find themselves a part of the same labor pool as the US worker.

This is the reality. You may hate it, but thats just the way it is. The choice therefore is either to shout yourself hoarse for eternity hurling abuse at those damn Indians, or adapting yourself to the change...because the only thing permanent, is change.

Those who take advantage of the 'change' , prosper, those who waste their time complaing and crying, get chucked out.

You can blame India, but it is American youth that killed tech support in America.

In desperate need of a job, I worked in an inbound call center about ten years ago. It was exactly as you say.

Everybody who bitches about call center jobs going overseas should first consider whether or not these are a.) jobs worth keeping, since b.) you can't seem to pay Americans enough to do the job well -- even though wages are well above minimum wage and the job is anything but taxing.

And, if the Indians are unintelligible and incompent, they certainly offer a less expensive brand of incompetency.

Finally, there's this: if a company saw a drop in its bottom line profits because they had outsourced tech support, they would immediately return the jobs to the USA. And that doesn't seem to be happenin'...

FWIW, I have literally spent hours on the phone with someone in India who ultimately talked me thru the removal of my computer's fried mother board and then once the replacement arrived, talked me thru the reinstallation process.....

All in all my experiences have been extremely satisfactory. I really don't care who or where the support is, my primary concern is the end result.......

Well, I sicerely apologize to all of you "seasoned" FR people. I do not know the abbreviations, or the format, or the people who are constantly logged in. I also know I don't usually have time to take part in such discussions (having to run this hotel usually takes up about 91 hours of my week....which makes my salary pretty much worthless). I just happened to take some time off due to a sinus infection and found this site. It seemed like a good place to share some issues that bother me (and others to from the response) to people who might seem to give a damn on which way the country is headed. Laws getting passed without a vote from "We the people" also get my goat, but that's another issue. Once again, I appologize, and I also want to say thanks to the people who understood it was my first time posting and actually knew what I was saying. I think a troll would apply to someone who knows better and not a first timer.

I am mentioning India because the last hotels I've worked at were owned by Indians and I see how they are. I work for them now because I have no where else to go. But they are probably just using me too because I work for cheap. And after all I've done to get this hotel running again, I'll probably just get it up the (you know what)so one of their relatives can take it over after all the problems are solved.

hey do not want to hire proper help

I think you just answered your own question.

Let's not kid ourselves, folks. This is ALL about money, nothing more. Some gibber-speaking Indian who will politely tell you to pound sand comes for a tenth the price of an American who has been on the job for all of two days.

In my experience, support desks pay squat, work their people like field hands, and scream over every little slipup. Then they wonder why they can't keep any trained help. If you can last 6 months in that pressure cooker, you're considered "senior" and the job demands actually increase. But you DO get an extra nickel an hour!

I do not know the abbreviations, or the format, or the people who are constantly logged in.

I wasn't trying to offend you. I'm simply trying to offer some friendly advice.

You'll notice I refrained from calling a "ZOT", calling you a "troll", etc.

It seemed like a good place to share some issues that bother me

And that it is, if done correctly. Vanities, as I stated earlier, should be posted under "General/Chat".

The "News" section is reserved for just that - news. Irregardless of the merits of your opinions on a particular subject, un-sourced personal diatribes do not meet the definition of "news".

Laws getting passed without a vote from "We the people" also get my goat, but that's another issue.

And would be a good topic for discussion, if done correctly. I can think of two ways to do this:

1.) Post your thoughts to General/Chat for discussion.

2.) Use Google News to search for a news article which pertains to a topic you wish to discuss. Post the article to News/Activism. You may then post your thoughts/comments in response to the article.

I think a troll would apply to someone who knows better and not a first timer.

Rules for posting can be found by clicking "Help", at the top right of the FR page.

Posting Guidelines

They apply to everyone, newbies and veterans of FR alike.

Sorry for the type error...
I know the outsourcing is about the money and they can get people to work for 10 cents an hour. I was generally stating that as well as businesses outsourcing, were making it very easy for people from certain countries (and no, it's not just India) to come in, get grants (that they don't even have to repay) to open or buy businesses when the unemployment rate in America rises and they want our left limbs for a grant for us to open or buy a business. I know a lot of people are saying that I'm whining, but it was people whining about things untill they had enough that founded this country
