Accessing secure sites with Hughes.net satellite modems
Navy Homepage ^ | Aug 23, 2006 | Taxrelief

Posted on 08/23/2006 5:08:43 AM PDT by TaxRelief

I had not been to visit the main Navy website for several months, so it was surprising to find that none of my Navy history bookmarks work anymore. Unfortunately, all links in my collection of Navy bookmarks point to http://www.navy.mil and http://www.history.navy.mil.

Attempts to browse to the site return a "DNS lookup error". (Army.mil and af.mil still work.) BTW, all of the links at the Navy recruiting site -- http://www.navy.com/sitesofinterest/ -- also point to navy.mil.

All google searches on Navy topics seem to bring up navy.mil.

Does anyone know if the address has changed? Or if there is a redirect for the site that has been disabled? Or if there is another way in?

Thanks, TR

I've been on some of the Navy sites this morning and have had no problem.

Here's a link to websites from off my son's ship's page:

http://www.lassen.navy.mil/links.htm

Maybe you can get to some sites from there?

Call your ISP. All of your links work.

Pat,

Your pulling my leg, right? Is the Navy blocking hughes.net (my satellite provider) customers, do you think?

Have no problem accessing www.navy.mil sites or history.navy.mil sites.

Are you running with a host file by chance? There has been an ip code change take place over the past few weeks going to the expanded ip numbers. That change over at my ISP gave me a few bumps for a day or so until the changeover was complete.

If you are using an old host file, many ip numbers are likely to be invalid.

Yet another reason to dump satellite. Thanks. I'll give them a call.

How many digits have ip addresses expanded to?

IPv4 is and always has been 4 decimal numbers.

My ip is currently 4 groups of 3decimals, ipv4.

About two weeks ago they ran a trial run with 6 groups, ipv6, which is where the internet is ultimately headed.

Life got interesting for a couple of days while my ISP was monkeying with the ip number in its tests.

Solution (specific to Hughes.net customers):

navy.mil site is a "secure site".

The site required the following changes:

Access properties in the LAN connection and add the following static DNS server under the TCP/IP protocol: 66.82.4.8. The DNS suffix for this connection is hughes.net. This change must also be made if you are attempting to access certain VPN's. :-) The modem will require a 30 second shut down and reboot after these changes are made.

Thanx to all who helped.

I'm not sure what screwed-up DNS has to do with being a "secure" site, but I'm glad you got your problem fixed!
