Is Karr 'Gaming' the System?
It doesn't take much to cast doubt on the story John Mark Karr has been telling. Although he claims to have killed six year old JonBenet Ramsey in her Colorado home in 1996, his tale doesn't hold water. The confession makes no sense -- none of the evidence points to him in any way. His handwriting doesn't match that on the ransom note, according to most experts. His confession states that he picked the girl up from school, but the murder took place during vacation. He stated that he drugged her, but no traces of drugs were found in her system. His ex-wife -- in fact, his entire family -- claims that he was in Atlanta when the murder took place. Yet Karr went out of his way to confess to the killing, and no one can figure out why.
It's tempting to dismiss Karr as a nut, especially considering his strange behavior. Karr obsessively "collected" details about the murder, even exchanging phone calls, letters and emails with anyone remotely involved with the case. His 2001 California arrest for possession of child pornography led to a messy divorce and his flight to Thailand, where he recently had his facial hair permanently removed at a clinic, in preparation for gender reassignment surgery.
Yet Karr is no gibbering lunatic, baying at the moon -- he at least appears to be rational and intelligent. Nor, if he were completely sane and guilty, would he confess to a crime for which he would never be caught. Karr wants something, something he can only get as a prisoner in the American justice system. Is it fame he's after? Does he just want to be connected with the case in some way? Maybe. But there is one thing he can get for free as a prisoner in Colorado, something for which he would normally have to pay a lot of money: gender reassignment hormone therapy. Could that be at least part of Karr's reason for confessing to a crime that most experts doubt he committed?
In 2002, a Colorado inmate won the "right" to have the state of Colorado provide hormone treatments for his "gender identity disorder," because the treatments were started prior to incarceration. Although the state has not yet been forced to pay for the actual operations, getting pre-surgery treatment at taxpayer expense can save a person quite a bit. One has to wonder whether Karr -- eking out a meager living as a teacher in Thailand, getting fired from school after school -- saw an opportunity to turn his obsession with the Ramsey case into a tangible benefit.
He would have known enough to convince law enforcement officials to check out his story, while making enough deliberate mistakes to ensure that he couldn't possibly be convicted. He may have realised that, while waiting for the slow wheels of justice to turn, he might be able to get free hormone treatments. In addition, the sale of his story to authors and movie-of-the-week producers (to which every prisoner is entitled, according to the Liberal version of the Bill of Rights) ought to net him enough money for the surgery itself after he's released, even if performed here in America.
Of course, this is all mere speculation. Karr might just be an obsessed madman who wants his name linked with JonBenet Ramsey's. He could simply be attempting to draw public attention to the case that still consumes him. But what other logical explanation could there be for his starting treatments right before confessing to the murder, which he knew would land him in a Colorado jail? Karr could be "gaming" the system in a coldly calculated way, using his familiarity with a horrible crime -- and abusing the memory of a murdered girl -- to get something for nothing.
Whatever the truth behind Karr's confession, he's already gotten more attention than he deserves. The media play-by-play of his deportation and flight back to America was excruciating. We don't need to hear all the details of his twisted life, which are almost certainly forthcoming. Before long, we'll probably hear that he was abused as a child, thus -- to some -- absolving him of responsibility for his crimes and choices.
If we're lucky, a lack of DNA evidence will cause the prosecution to drop the case, despite whatever details he revealed that only the killer would be likely to know. It's a good bet, though, that John Mark Karr is going to be with us for quite a while, dominating the headlines until we approach the 2006 election, Israel defends itself again, or another celebrity gets pregnant.
I never thought I'd be rooting so hard for the Hollywood crowd.
Karr is nuttier than a Christmas Cheese Ball.............
As soon as I heard that he had visited a "gender adjustment clinic" more than once that he was trying to get someone else to pay for his hormone pills and ultimately his operations.
Does CO have the death penalty? If so he may get more than he bargained for, if he can't convince people that he lied when he confessed.
Maybe as a result of an encounter with "Bubba", when he first arrived at his new home?
This crap of "disorders" has gone off the deep end, to where any nutcase/wingnut/moonbat has a "victim" excuse and we accommodate them and the taxpayer funds their nutti-ness.....
Get a grip, America
Colorado is in a world of it's own. There was an initiative on the ballot in Denver last year ordering the city to remove stress from people's lives.............or something very similar to that wording.
If Colorodo is stupid enough to do that, then, hell, I'm all for sending him there. Ayn Rand would be proud....
We know John Galt did not retire to Colorado! For sure!
Now this is news you can use. Who cares about the rest of the crap story.
Think of the money I could save on razors..., the time saved on a daily basis that would no longer be wasted on scraping my face with an expensive, multi-bladed weapon..., the money spent on after-shave items..., bandaids..., oh, the list goes on and on.
Can this really be done?
I can't stand the itch of a beard, and after 40-something years of almost daily shavings, I'm willing to give anything a try, just to not have to go thru that ritual every day. Now I do occasionally grow a mustache, but that only increases the time and effort investment, since I must trim carefully around the 'stache and occasionally trim the length with scissors.
Perhaps, if I were to commit some minor infraction and be jailed for a short period of time, I could force my incarcerating authorities to spring for this procedure, huh?
Just the beard and leave the mustache, okay? Or maybe the sideburn area, in case they come back into style.
So to game the system he has to confess to a murder he didn't commit, get convicted, get the surgery, then admit lying and get his conviction overturned. I think the perv would be better off just paying for the surgery.
Maybe, but wait 'til noted handwriting expert Mary Mapes takes the stand.
Before long, we'll probably hear that he was abused as a child, thus -- to some -- absolving him of responsibility for his crimes and choices.
Saw a news blurb yesterday that his mother tried to torch him when he was a youngster.
That's hilarious. I would love to know more about that.
Sounds like a D.C. initiative...
Some handwriting expert on Fox said he was 99.9 percent sure it WAS his handwriting. Personally, I think this 'man' is demon possessed. His earlier pictures show someone quite different from the person he is today.
Daughter ws living in Denver at the time so of course I would be on the 9 news Denver website every day. There it was and it was the real thing too. Can't remember if it passed, it probably did. Now there is an initiative to allow smoking pot in Denver. Of course, smoking is banned in all restaurants etc. But as a friend said, maybe Denver will have a pot smokers section in the restaurants.
Can't keep the story alive if you don't have someone on to take the unrealistic view that this nutjob is the real killer.
FWIW, "the sex-change capital of the world" is in Trinidad, CO (near the CO/NM border). A doctor specialized legitimate surgery for infants of birth defects &c and one thing led to another over thirty or forty years.
A few observations of my own though. The woman that came forward with the tape recordings, throws yet more "Cochrane" into the mix. She said Karr said he "hid in the house", when he was at the party- or while the party was on.
The house party seems to have been on the 23rd of Dec, at the Ramsey house. The Ramseys ( I hope I am not wrong) went to a friends house on the 24th of Dec.
When Nancy Grace's people contacted the woman, to put her information on the Grace show, Nancy said this.
They wanted money.
The late Johnny Cochrane would have had a field day with this case. His passing regretted by a few. (laughs).
If the answer is YES, please explain on Line B:
Well, now, see, if I had a potential job applicant with a need to explain such on Line B, I'd surely see the sense of thriftiness and practicality exhibited in one that threw a brick to escape a lifetime of shaving ritual. I mean, hey, six months in jail for a lifetime of savings on time and money?
And, recognizing such industrialianess (izzat a real word?), I'd certainly be more inclined to hire such a person. And can you imagine the compliments you'd get from your customers regarding the clean-cut appearance of your employees?
Everybody wins.
Except the taxpayer whose hard-earned money went into the coffers of the local incarceration authorities that allowed the hair-removal to be done...uh-oh!
Personally, I don't think he did it, but the letters on the bottom of the letter and the same letters written on a classmate's picture in their yearbook are interesting. Food for thought.
He wants Colorado to pay for his lopitoffame?
It would take a minimum of 3 but more than likely 5 visits, and cost varies with each place, but laser hair removal would certainly fix your need to shave. :-)
You have an unusal way using the English language, but I thank your compliment.
Well, good luck; you are bound to meet some interesting people either in prison or at the hair clinic!
Most men that get their faces done are "pre-ops", and the prison thing, well...
