Exclusive: 'I Married John Karr At 13'
ABC News/San Jose ^ | 8.23.06

Quientana Ray was just 12 years old when she met John Mark Karr, the 41-year-old man under arrest for the 1996 murder of JonBenet Ramsey. Within a year, against her parents wishes, she and Karr, then 19, were married.

Ex-Wife Claims She Was Drugged, Abused

Ray said she met Karr at a party in Hamilton, Ala.,and he proceeded to seduce her. Her parents, Melissa and Larry Shotts, said they were opposed to the marriage.

The couple had a lengthy battle with Ray's parents over the relationship. According to Ray's parents, Karr became more defensive and threatening as they continued to oppose the couple's plans.

And Ray said Karr became a different person after they were married.

"I believed he loved me," she said. But her marriage to Karr lasted less than a year. That year, according to Ray, was a tumultuous one.

"I was drugged and things were done to me without me having any idea," said Ray, who is now married with a 4-month-old child.

In 1985, after nine months of marriage, Shotts filed for an annulment, complaining in court records that she was "fearful for her life and safety."

There is a picture of his ex-wife on site.
She looks like a grown up version of Jon Benet Ramsey or what Jon Benet may have looked like if
her life hadn't been taken by a vicious child killer

Sad

Why does this story remind me of Gary Condit so much?

Karr's almost messed up enough to be a US senator.

"Corellation of social pathologies with idiot names" ping. What was 12-year-old Quientana doing at a party with 19-year-old John?

BTTT

This is an interesting story. JMO, perhaps it could be bumped to news, or front page news.

If her parents opposed the marriage so vehemently, how come they couldn't get a restraining order on Karr or something to keep the ceremony from taking place?

And who performed the ceremony?

What were her parents thinking? Married at 13?

2 possibilites come to mind

1. Bad parenting
2. Pre-teen sneaking out to party with the older crowd

From article:

"Her parents, Melissa and Larry Shotts, said they were opposed to the marriage.

The couple had a lengthy battle with Ray's parents over the relationship. According to Ray's parents, Karr became more defensive and threatening as they continued to oppose the couple's plans."

This is in Alabama however it seems that 13 is too young in any state

Good questions. Maybe her parents' opposition was as effective as their supervision :-).

It seems like at some point they had to sign for her

I don't know what Alabama law is on this but I would be surprised if a 13 yr. old could get married WITHOUT parental approval

Sadly, there are parents that married early and this is a generational problem until some girls in the family decide to finish HS and graduate college. When the cycle is broken and the family becomes more prosperous and intelligent then you see families view such marriages as barbaric and perverted.

Until then, it's the same old same old!

I suspect you're right, and that the whole story is very sordid.

2006 in Alabama:

Under 18: If either of you are under 18, you will need a certified copy of your birth certificate. Both parents must be present with identification, or if you have a legal guardian they must be present with a court order and identification.

As a side note cousins can marry in Alabama
