Anyone having problems with McAafee Security Suite? (yet another vanity from Hack)

I have McAfee security suite. It ran somewhat fine until the latest "upgrade". Now new windows take way to long to to open, and even the boot up process to where I can actually use the computer takes a lot longer. I tried uninstalling everything except the virus scan, and it still runs like a turtle.

From what I read, Mcafee is RAM resident and the newest release must be a huge RAM hog. It gave me the excuse to order the extra 512M of memory - Rambus RDRAM 800 MHz BTW - very expensive but I don't think that should be necessary. Going with cheaper memory would require a different chipset and I don't even want to f**k with that so I bought the Rambus.

I'll console myself with the fact that I won't have to turn everything off to run Doom 3 now.

Anyone else running into this problem with McAfee?

Sounds to me like:

Dude, get a life, quit wnining, get a real computer, get a Mac!

That's like telling a carpenter to get Bob Villa's new "miracle hammer".

McAfee is a POS. Dump it, and get AVG's security suite. Far less resource intensive.

I've also read that.

The main problem is - you're using McAfee!

To get rid of McAfee (unlike Norton, which can be all but impossible to remove), merely go to Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panels, and remove everything that says "McAfee".

I had to dump McAfee stuff years ago because of how intrusive, slow, and buggy it was. Some of my older PC's became essentially non-functional with it installed because they didn't have anywehre near the resources and throughput needed to run McAfee AND Windows at the same time. :o)

You got that right. You may have posted info about AVG (someone did) and, on that advice, I removed McAfee and installed AVG a month or two ago and I haven't looked back since.

Can't beat the price either.

McAfee is very well known to the hackers & virus types and they go right past it while you're tearing out your hair trying to get it to let you into a benign web-site.

And McAfee is so bloody slow to respond to new threats and techniques, it's not even funny.

Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security are just as bad if not worse in some ways.

I've tried Norton and McAfee, but the latest Windows LiveOne Care more than does the job. Also, I was able to more effectively protect 3 computers for the price of one.

The thing is that it wasn't that bad until this latest release. I think they are adopting the MS approach and using customers for the beta testers.

Well, you might consider trying these freebies:

Free avast! 4 Home Edition
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Get free anti-virus and anti-spyware
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php

I've used both at different times on the home machines, and they are darn good.

Correct. The latest version of McAfree has slowed my PC to a crawl. I'm getting mighty annoyed.

Mine seems OK - there was a new siggy file yesterday. You might pull up Task Manager and hit Show Processes from All Users - if McTskshd.exe or McShield.exe or Mcdetect.exe are hogging the CPU or the memory it'll show up there.

I run both Symantec and AVG on other computers. I've found that if you're running just the realtime scan all of these products function more or less satisfactorily but their add-ons get a little messy. You may want to dump the Suite.

The software may only be a symptom, too - one of the first signs that the hard drive was failing on the laptop I'm typing this on was that scheduled scans started to take a loooong time. Had a failed server RAID controller show the same thing one time.

Ugh. Good luck.

I've had McAfee and dumped it too! I have been running Norton for the past year and a half with no problems. It just stinks that in October I've got to pay them another 40 or so bucks to renew for another 12 months.

I use McAfee and ZoneAlarm (security suite) on different computers. I'm ready to dump McAfee. Anybody had experience with ZoneAlarm? It's on a computer that I don't tie into the internet very much.
