Anyone having problems with McAafee Security Suite? (yet another vanity from Hack)
www.freerepublic.com ^ | 9-3-06 | Hacksaw

I have McAfee security suite. It ran somewhat fine until the latest "upgrade". Now new windows take way to long to to open, and even the boot up process to where I can actually use the computer takes a lot longer. I tried uninstalling everything except the virus scan, and it still runs like a turtle.

From what I read, Mcafee is RAM resident and the newest release must be a huge RAM hog. It gave me the excuse to order the extra 512M of memory - Rambus RDRAM 800 MHz BTW - very expensive but I don't think that should be necessary. Going with cheaper memory would require a different chipset and I don't even want to f**k with that so I bought the Rambus.

I'll console myself with the fact that I won't have to turn everything off to run Doom 3 now.

Anyone else running into this problem with McAfee?

I love and use Avast. The first time the virus alert went off I just about went into cardiac arrest. LOL

I would also recommend Web root Spy Sweeper.

Or go with CA's Internet Security Suite. Computer Associates makes a decent product.

McAfee was loaded in the software for my pc and I hate it. I disabled everything possible and things were fine for awhile. Then came the pop-ups for their updates. My trial period is over, yet it keeps running.

McAfee is as bad as a virus.

Dell's Community Forum is very good, much better than their tech support, from India I might add! They can barely speak English and you can hear them leafing through manuals! LOL!

Had the same thing happen with the latest upgrade. Now it's history. Pain in the butt to remove it though.

Nope but I use Zone Alarm Security Suite so that might be why. :)

It really is quite a good program and I don't have anywhere near the headaches that I got from McAfee.

I have the Security Suite and I like it quite a lot.

I have had this computer on line almost contently for a year and have only had maybe six spy-ware make it through and two viruses that did no harm and were promptly eliminated.

Dude, get a life, quit wnining, get a real computer, get a Mac!

"Wnining" must be one of those Mac terms. How cool.

How's that right-click working for you?

McAfee and Nortons are both POS, overpriced and creates problems. We tried both (one of my family actually worked for McAfee and couldn't keep it running). Finally blew them all off and put on AVGFree. Haven't had a virus one since then. It was amazing how many viruses McAfee and Nortons had let through the first time I ran AVGFree.

BTW, if you're having freeze up problems, etc there's a very good chance it's Nortons.

Standard Security Regimen

1. Firewall: Kerio
2. Antivirus: AVG
3. Malware/trojans/etc:
a. Adaware (NOT Adware)
b. Spybot

Weekly Protocol

For AVG, update the virus definitions once a week. Do a virus scan at least every two days. (Mine does a scan automatically every morning at 3am.)

For Adaware, update the definitions and do a scan once a week.

For Spybot, update the definitions and do a scan once a week. Always immunize after updating. Running the Tea Timer utility is a great idea.

Saved the best for last, ALL of this is free.

The numbers represent the hits to a particular website accessed by the General Public. Weblogs are a pretty good way of finding out exactly how many real people out surfing the Web are using what browser and what operating system..a kind of built-in "poll" that webmasters see every day.

Maybe Jim will post some of FR's someday. The percentages will be roughly similar.

I am just tired of True Believers not being helpful of someone is having a problem by barging in with sales pitches on their favorites, like Macs/ Linux, etc.

Yes, I run Linux and Windows. They all have their good points, but it is NOT a "One True Faith" kind of thing.

I use Mozilla Firefox as a browser and have had no problems for several years.

Folks & family have troubles they'd like me to fix and are perplexed that I don't know how.
I have never had these problems and therefore don't know how to fix 'em.

Speaking of behalf of the Mac FReepers - we don't sell Macs, but plenty of folks on FR have found the Mac recommendations helpful as a solution to their problems.

Macs simply put an end to the plague of viruses, worms and spyware - if you don't install Microsoft Windows.

Consumer Reports said Zone Alarm was the best. I am going to download it to the laptop and check it out.
