'South Park' Has Heart
AP - Yahoo ^ | September 26, 2006 | Frazier Moore

Posted on 09/26/2006 9:45:53 AM PDT by EveningStar

"We try to never be cynical," Matt says. "I think we're really optimistic, happy people, and we want the show to have an optimistic message."

"It's not like we have a formula," says Trey, "but I think one of the reasons this show has survived is that it has a big heart at its center. Other cartoon shows have people crap on each other and make racist jokes. But I don't think people tune in for that. I just don't think a show lasts for 10 years without a heart."

"You can take any issue, no matter what side you're on, and make fun of the far extremes," says Matt. "So much of 'South Park' is a group on this side and a group on that side, all screaming at each other. And the boys in the middle are going, `What are you all doing this for?'"

That's what I love most about SP... they make fun of the nutcases on both sides.

Great article, thanks for posting.

South Park is my guilty pleasure.

I would like for them to use less swearing, but aside from that, they skewer so many things that need it.

Other cartoon shows have people crap on each other and make racist jokes.

Well, they do make racial based jokes, but its always with the intention of making the joker look like the stupid one.

I just watched the "Scott Tenorman must die" episode again.

I think that one may have been lacked even a scintilla of heart or sweetness. Probably why it's my favorite.

Actually I find that the "South Park kids'" swearing is about 50% of what's funny about the show. Amazingly, it has NEVER gotten old to me. Hearing Cartman yell out *SOB* in that inimitable voice with the angst in it makes me *LOL* every time...

Really, now. They're dressed for a cruise on Big Gay Al's yacht. White on white on white, and those pirate cuffs? Jeez Louise, I love South Park, but the inescapable impression is: these guys must buy vaseline by the gallon.

Cartman has the best comic timing of anyone on tv now with the possible exception of Kevin Dillon on Entourage.

*LOL*! They got you too!

Its absolutely hilarious how they milked that 'gay thing' for all it was worth.

Here's a clue - the two of them are HUGE Monty Python fans, and ALL of the 'gay posturing' in their 1999 documentary, and in some of the intros to the South Park compilation DVDs are 100% spoofs of Monty Python skits. Since I am old enough to have watched all the Python episodes/movies - even saw them live in 1976 - I "got" the inside joke immediately.

They were pulling your leg - with success it seems.

P.S. Trey just got married to a Chinese-American goddess.......

You keep using that word...I do not think it means what you think it means...

as evidenced by the 50 or so people in my office who do a pretty good Eric Cartman...

Actually, my friends tell me that "you have Cartman's voice down pat!"

Whenever I want to get a laugh, I launch into my imitation of the classroom scene from the beginning of the South Park movie, where all the boys start swearing, much to the shock of Mr. Garrison:

Mr. G: How would you like to go to the Principal's Office??!!?

Cartman: How would you like to lick my balls?

I think the swearing is funny only because it fits.
When Cartman says SOB, anybody else in that situation would say the exact same thing.

There is a big heart in South Park because of the respect they have for their characters. For example, Token, Timmy and Jimmy, in other tv shows would be charaters who would teach everybody an important lesson. On South Park they are real kids.
